You guys are quoting the Weapon Proficiency part of the Kensai. But the Canny Defense ability doesn't say it has to be the same as the weapon you are proficient with, just a specific "chosen weapon".

Quote:
Canny Defense: At 1st level, when a kensai is wielding his chosen weapon, he gains the canny defense ability. This is identical to the duelist prestige class ability of the same name, save that his chosen weapon may be of any type.

I'm starting a new character in a game and trying to combine the two archetypes. I want to play someone that uses cards(Yu-Gi-Oh! villain-esque), I don't care that they're destroyed or that other weapons would deal more damage. Is there any reason the Kensai can't choose "card" or "deck of cards" for their class abilities? Card Caster gains Deadly Dealer as a bonus feat which allows the spellcaster to treat them like weapons, so can I use them as chosen weapons? Get Weapon Focus? etc.?

Quote:

Deadly Dealer:

You can throw a card as though it were a dart, with the same damage, range, and other features. You must use the Arcane Strike feat when throwing a card in this way, or else the card lacks the magical force and precision to deal lethal damage. A card is destroyed when thrown in this way.

Harrow cards are treated as masterwork weapons when thrown using this feat, but are still destroyed after they are thrown. A harrow deck can no longer be used as a fortune-telling device after even a single card is thrown.

A spellcaster with this feat can enhance a deck of cards as though it were a ranged weapon with 54 pieces of ammunition. This enhancement functions only when used in tandem with this feat, and has no affect on any other way the cards might be used.

I've been trying to find a specific ruling on this, but haven't come up with anything.

Throwing Magus:
Whenever the magus enhances his weapon using his arcane pool, he can spend 1 additional point from his arcane pool to add the returning and throwing abilities to the list of available weapon special abilities.

When the magus throws a weapon enhanced by his arcane pool and hits a foe, he regains 1 arcane pool point. The magus can regain a number of arcane pool points per day equal to his Intelligence modifier in this way. If he throws his held weapon and draws another in the same round, he can enhance the newly drawn weapon with his arcane pool as a free action instead of a swift action.

Blinkback Belt:
A set of clips is attached to this segmented belt constructed of metallic links.

Up to two one-handed melee weapons or up to four light melee weapons can be hung from the belt in straps or sheaths. When the wearer draws a weapon attached to this belt and throws it before the end of her next turn, the weapon teleports back to its strap or sheath immediately after the attack is resolved.

Since reading the ranged tactics toolbox, I've been trying to put Throwing Magus onto a workable character idea.

Say, for example, I have a +1 Dagger attached to my blinkback belt, the Quick Draw feat, +6 BAB, and for certain reasons I have not drawn or enhanced the dagger with my Magus ability at all in the combat. As a full round action, could I; quick draw as a free action, throw the non-enhanced dagger, have it return to my belt after the attack resolves, quick draw it again, and then enhance it with my Arcane Pool as a free action? And then obviously throw it again but with more damage. The last sentence of Throwing Magus would lead me to believe yes, but it says "another" so I'm not sure if it has to be a another seperate weapon because I'm pretty sure this was intended for throwing multiple weapons in a round.

I already know I can't Spellstrike with throwing weapons without the Myrmidarch or Card Caster archetypes, that's not my concern. I'm just curious if anyone can see reason my scenario won't work.

Okay, thanks. Just wanted to make sure.

I couldn't find a post about this and it's been bothering me.

So I know that Ablative Barrier converts the first 5 damage to nonlethal and dispels after converting 5 x caster level. But when I'm healed does that reset the damage taken on the barrier? For example, say I'm a 6th level caster and I've been hit for 10 damage and 20 nonlethal, I get CLW and heal 9. Now I'm at 1 lethal and 11 nonlethal, does that mean the barrier can take another 19 points before being dispelled or the 10 it would have before I was healed?

The way I picture it, the barrier is being chipped away at (ablative) and the healing does nothing to affect it. Am I correct?
