Thanks good friends. Your words are taken to heart. These posts have kept me company many a late night in dry and desert-like parts. If you ever find yourselves in the position of purchasing a cup of coffee for a member of the Armed Forces, please do so. In an almost divinely inspired way, every time I am approaching rock bottom with job frustration, some kind-hearted stranger offers to buy me a cup o' joe or a Coke. It has happened in restaurants, gas stations, and airports. And EVERY time, it is the one thing I truly needed. Thank you to those wonderful strangers who keep me going. Soj

Quite right, totally common, but still a mistake. It is one thing if the double negative was intended, but in this case, I view it as simply a result of mishearing the original correct phrase. Correct on the Spanish as well, but many things do not translate well...I should know, I live in Spain. Carne does not always mean beef...something I learned to my eternal gastrointestinal regret.
The one that infuriates me the most is oft heard from my friends, family, and most recently, TV and Movies. While not grammar related, it is the phrase, "I could care less." The correct phrase is "I could NOT care less." The first implies that while your feelings are minimal, they still exist. The second conveys the stance that you are completely indifferent to the subject matter. It is the rock bottom of your "ability to care." When people use this phrase, they intend the latter, but often say the former. Drives me mad.... (prepares for someone to use phrase incorrectly to denote feelings toward thread subject...let em fly)
I am finding it quite interesting to read each person's take on this question. Personally (as a sometimes player AND GM), I find the min-maxing quite the turnoff, but really love the setting. When creating, then playing, a character, I would almost rather not know what feats, spells, abilities, etc. are coming up with each level advance. I know it sounds strange, but I don't like planning ahead. For me, my char develops more organically as the story unfolds. Also, I LOVE reading about the settings, lore, factions, etc. It really fires my imagination up. Best,

Congrats!!! Wonderful news!!! As a new father, myself, I know the joy you are feeling! Start practicing you one-handed typing as the Paizo boards will keep you company as you are up late at night. Best, Sojourner

I would be quite interested in playing (no PbP exp here). If you have a list of future players, I would be excited to be added to it.

For me, the show is like "Mr. Wizard" (dating myself here) with a much bigger budget (and no pesky liability issues). My favorite episodes are the early ones where they dealt with "myths" that my friends and I grew up believing (and totally perpetuating) with no evidence whatsoever. Sometimes, though, I am saddened when a myth turns out to be, well, a myth. The episode where they proved that you could not blow up a great white with a tank of compressed air? Roy Scheider's awesomeness faded a bit in my eyes that day...

Thanks, friend! I will definitely take a look at that (in addition to all of the other suggestions). Greatly appreciate all of the advice. Lilith, thanks for the cookies! I am up late with my twins boys again and snacks that I can pile in my lap are KEY! :) I plan to set aside some time tomorrow morning at the office to see what websites work with our network. The most popular bandwidth hogs are often blocked. Thankfully, Paizo has not registered on their radar as it is not graphics intensive nor does it rely on streaming video. Great community, this one!
Tarren, Thanks for the encouragement. My days can be very busy, but I would lying if I said that I could not find 20 mins or more to post (as I am doing now ;) ). Work is probably the best venue as I also have 7 week old twin boys (they rock! my sleep? not so much). I find that I love reading, buying, collecting the RPG materials, but have rarely actually used them. Best,

I've been looking at that, too, as I do have some friends back in the States that may be up to it. Prob is the timezone differences. It's tough to do something "live."
Been a fan of RPGs for a long time, but have never really played with any regularity. You see, I really got into them in my mid-twenties after I acquired an independently earned income after grad school. The problem is that the particulars of my job make it pretty difficult to find other gamers. "How so?", you might ask. Well... I'm in the military. But, as we all know, lots of active-duty folks play, right? True, true. But my position as a fairly senior officer (and the attendant culture inherent thereto) makes finding a group basically impossible, not to mention that my actual job only adds to this limitation. Thus, I have been looking at PbP options, but am unsure if they are really worth the time. There are several on this board that seem really great, but there appear to be just as many that die off rather quickly. Thoughts?

TV has been my saving grace. 'Course, I have not actually heard it in a while. Whole lot of Closed Captioning is going on now. It is actually pretty funny when whatever program they use messes up. Some of the "translations" are hysterical. Yeah, it is great, but I was wondering if any of you know of any stores that might sell extra arms or hands?
Most definitely. I did not want to get into the whole states' constitution thing as the US is really 50 different little countries with their own sets of rules (though they are quite beholden/limited to what the Fed Constitution forbids regarding Gov't conduct). The states can always grant more freedoms, they just cannot restrict them any further than the Fed Const does.
Here's the deal with "Freedom of Speech" that most people do not get: The amendment protects the U.S. citizen's FoS from the U.S. Government (each state has a similar provision). What most people do not understand is that it does not protect (and cannot) you from your neighbor. If I put up "Elect Elminster" signs in my front yard and my neighbor, a filthy Dragonlance biased lout, comes over, stomps on my sign, puts up a large, gaudily painted, "Elect Raistlin" sign in its stead, he has not abridged, violated, or in any way hindered my right to FoS. Why? He is not the Federal Gov't. Now, he may have violated a criminal law or two regarding trespass or destruction of property, but not FoS. True FoS has nothing to do with the original poster's point.
Hey folks! My spouse is very interested in having me run a game for her, but I am unsure of where to begin. I have been reading and collecting RPG books (primarily D@D) for a few years so I am familiar with the concepts. I would like to get y'all's opinion on what you think is the best approach to take for both her and me? Pathfinder adventure paths/modules simplified? Thoughts? Thoughts on best way to run a game for, admittedly, a much smaller than typical group (one)? Thanks!!! Cheers!

I have been reading and collecting RPG books (primarily D@D) for a few years so I am familiar with the concepts. With the release of 4E, I would like to get y'all's opinion on whether you think it would be easier for her (brand new player) to learn 3.5/PRPG or 4E? Which would be easier for me to run for her? Thoughts on best way to run a game for, admittedly, a much smaller than typical group (one)? Thanks!!! Cheers! |
