The lowliest and most furtive of the many kinds of aberrations that creep and scuttle and eke out short, ugly, brutal existences in the nighted depths of DeepOerth burrowed its way through the blackness toward the oubliette, following some instinctual impulse that drew it as sure as a lodestone, clawing away the impacted mud and clay of centuries to excavate a path through the course of a sewer tunnel no wider than a dinner plate in diameter .... an adolescent choker named Skribblix.
He carefully poked his squishy head out of the hole he'd opened some 15 feet up the wall of the dismal oubliette, overlooking a stone slab upon which rested a beautiful and deadly-looking sword, its curvy serpentine blade of a gleaming black skymetal unknown to the mortal metallurgists of Oerth or any other known Prime Material Plane world .... Its cunningly wrought basket hilt in the shape of a rakishly handsome demon face with spiral ram-like horns, a goatee and mustache, wolf-like canines bared in a feral, predatory grin, eyes a pair of glittering rubies in which an inner fire danced .... its pommel a flawless, walnut-sized cabochon-cut bloodstone of vibrant luster. "Ooooh! A pretty and dangerous thing," thought young Skribblix. "I WANTS it! It's MINE!" His bulbous, hairless, oily black head oozed further out of the hole, his beady black eyes twinkling with covetous desire ....
But then, he noticed the hideous guardian--a spiny giant with long, wickedly barbed tail, every inch of its slate grey hide bristling with dagger-like barbs or spines that appeared as strong as iron, its glowing amber eyes half closed in abject boredom. Skribblix silently retracted his blobby black head halfway back into the sewer pipe, beady black eyes squinting in irritation and rapidly blinking in alarm. "How will I claim my PRETTY THING, my DANGER-TOY, with this dreadful spiny giant here watching?? CURSES!! A festering pox on the spiny giant! I WANTS it .... I WANTS my PRETTY DANGER-TOY NOW!!"
