@GM_DBH: Would Setzer here be a character you might be interested in exploring? I could easily level him down to 1 from 4 (he was originally built for an in-progress Second Darkness game). I could also modify his background to take him in the direction of Numeria and Torch as opposed to Riddleport.

The fun thing about Setzer is the objects he uses for his kinetic blasts are appropriately themed. Since he is quite the gambler, he uses dice for blunt damage, cards for slashing, and darts for piercing. I thought that was a fun bit of flavor for the concept.

Feel free to check his post history to see examples of my writing style and how I like to play.

Thanks for your consideration.

Yo guys, just an update on Setzer and the man behind the keyboard. You'll probably see Setzer really falling into the background for the next month or so as RL has exploded to a level of borderline insanity. My wife and I are putting our house on the market in a few weeks, on top of that, I've got a tentative job offer which will drastically change my schedule and daily routine, and we just found out that my wife is expecting our second child! Talk about life happening all at once.

Combine that with the fact that my roll20 group going through a reboot scenario and all of my free time just vanished. I'll still be here reading along, but the time to actually sit down and compose a post will be very, very rare. The only reason I've got time to type this out is because our systems are down at work!

Until my life settles down a bit, I'll be here reading along and enjoying the adventures of Nel and Co. from the sidelines.

Setzer's eyes light up as the realization dawns on him. With a sly wink to Rilia he walks over to the injured man, setting his pack on the ground and pulling out his folding chair, "If you need some help getting around my new friend, I can help you with that." He unfolds the chair and after a moment of concentration the chair lifts easily into the air.

Smiling, quite proud of himself, he continues, "Let's get you all to safety, shall we?"

As Setzer emerges from the tower he sighs as he sees their crew escaped the wreckage mostly unharmed. The shrieks of the akatas soon begin to taper off as he systematically puts them out of their misery with a blast of telekinetic force.

That done he approaches the group with a somewhat dour expression, "Are we abandoning the idea of riches here? Are we under the impression the other expeditions have fared as badly as us? Surely there is much more of this island to explore before we tuck our tails between our legs and sulk back home." The glint in his red irises appears to be equal parts bravery and insanity.

Setzer begins to laugh heartily to fend off the terror of the situation as he dances along the rotating walls. As Nel tumbles close by - almost taking him out at the knees - he makes a desperate grab for her and manages to grasp her arm right above the elbow. "Steady my lady, I've got you. For now..." He gives her a shaky grin.

GM:
Sorry for not including my tracking spoiler at the bottom of the last few posts. Here are my currents stats:

Burn: 2/7
Temporary hit points: 8
Non-lethal damage: 8
Hit points (including temp.): 55

Kineticist (telekineticist) 4 | HP 47/47 | AC 18, Tch 14, FF 14 | CMD 16 | Fort +9, Ref +9, Will +3 | Init +4 | Per +8 | DD +14;SoH +10 (35’ range)

Since I posted Setzer's exposition before I'll simply post his ride check to get the ball rolling.

Setzer pales (if that is actually possible) as things quite literally go sideways. Following Nel's shouted commands he quickly darts upstairs to see what he can do to get the injured to safety.

Acrobatics to take this thing for a ride: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18

Alright, so that happened.

But, again, I am confused. You say 'The tower itself isn't moving, but seems to be treacherously balanced.' but then the following notes all assume the tower is rolling down the cliff in a landslide. So which is it?

Kineticist (telekineticist) 4 | HP 47/47 | AC 18, Tch 14, FF 14 | CMD 16 | Fort +9, Ref +9, Will +3 | Init +4 | Per +8 | DD +14;SoH +10 (35’ range)

Before we continue the in-character discussion, I want to get something straight. As far as I can tell, the akatas were already coming in through an opening on the ground floor which they have since abandoned in an effort to climb up the tower. So, our current proposed plan is to open up another opening on the first floor in an attempt to lure them back down? What will lure them back down if they've already abandoned the first opening?

Do we want Setzer to poke his head out and taunt them? Or perhaps fart in their general direction? If that doesn't work, does anyone have a catapult and a cow hidden in their trousers?

Kineticist (telekineticist) 4 | HP 47/47 | AC 18, Tch 14, FF 14 | CMD 16 | Fort +9, Ref +9, Will +3 | Init +4 | Per +8 | DD +14;SoH +10 (35’ range)

In that case ignore my attack roll.

Setzer stills as he hears the seething mass of beasts crawling up the seamless stone, "I can use my powers to clear one of the barricades to create a choke point, but that might put the injured at risk. Should we move them down here since the beasts seem so adamant about getting to he top of the tower?" He waits to act until the party offers up their thoughts on the matter.

If there's a target, I'll go ahead and make an attack during Setzer's turn.

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16

Setzer struggles to maintain his footing as the tower shakes even more.

As far as I can tell the party doesn't have a target at the moment. Unless some of the other windows have been broken in.

To Rilia, "Haha, I am sorry my dear for even my substantial abilities have their limits!" Setzer cranes his neck up the winding stairs, eyeing the windows where the akatas seem to be searching for an entrance.

Setzer can't help but laugh as he dances out of the way of the rolling spool while a few of the others stumble and fall, "If an entire tower crashing down upon our heads is part of the plan in the future, I'd prefer that the rest of us know about it, haha!"

Reveling in the thrill of the moment, Setzer spins a metal-tipped dart in the air and blasts it towards the newly presented akata.

Setzer considers Pluck's idea, scratching his chin as the gears turn (or idle?) in his head, "That may be our best course of action. I can blast them as they come in or..." He gives the rest a wry smile, "I could drop some furniture on their heads." He deflates somewhat as he realizes how ludicrous that idea sounds, "If only we had a few more bodies in here, we could use those pickaxes to break off some large chunks of stone. Now those would do some damage."

Is there any rubble lying about or unoccupied furniture? If so, Setzer will immediately drop to the ground and begin barricading the windows with whatever heavy objects he can find.

If not, Setzer huddles in with the others, bracing himself for yet another onslaught by creatures of the unknown. "Brace yourselves, friends, we've just been dealt another hand."

No worries, I was planning on waiting until the big boys talk. Setzer is a newcomer and he prefers to take a back seat during "serious" discussions. I'm still here ready to cheese it up.

Also, I've just experienced my first TPK ever in my other game, so we're in talks about where to go from there. The first encounter of the AP wiped the floor with us!

Setzer pouts at being rebuffed by the feisty elf woman. As the conversation continues, he listens whilst rummaging through his pack and unfolding his flying throne. He mounts it and rises into the air, going for a closer look at the smooth stone walls - determined to find a seam.

Setzer quickly rushes in with the rest, "Thank you for the temporary bit of refuge, Samaritha. Ah, please don't strain yourself! Allow me." As soon as Sam begins barricading the door, Setzer lays a gentle hand on her shoulder. He extends a hand towards the bookshelf and table and concentrates for a moment before the heavy objects gently lift off of the ground and float over to rest neatly in place against the doors. "There, now that that is done allow me to introduce myself properly." Setzer bows slightly, his stark white hair spilling over his shoulders. "I am Setzer Gabbiani, newly appointed Gamesmaster of the Gold Goblin. A pleasure to meet you." He eyes their surroundings for a moment, "This is quite the structure - masterfully crafted - I admire that level of skill." He nods approvingly, his amber eyes surveying the ground level of the tower.

"Not to worry, my dear, we'll have these things taken care of shortly! I'm Setzer by the way!" Setzer gives Samaritha a quick wave before he rushes forward, hoping to put down the confused zombie dwarf. He tosses a carved stone die into the air and blasts it towards the shambling form of undeath.

Staying well away from the corpses, Setzer hovers in silence, giving Nel the opportunity to examine the bodies to try to form some sort of explanation. I imagine Setzer's blasts look something like this. Yes, I am obsessed with Final Fantasy VI. Maybe I should've named my character Sabin Rene Figaro instead? :D

Edit: Well, #!$% I just remembered why I modeled this character after Setzer in the first place. I forgot the whole dart/card/die part of my blast. Oops. Chalk that up to first combat jitters, I guess. This is my first fight since... April? Yeah, it's been a while.

If Rilia's fascinate succeeds, Setzer will hold his action until the intentions of the party are known, otherwise:

No worries, you guys certainly do this a lot more than I do!

I think I'm going to end up passing on the GM that stepped up. Some other posters have brought to light his less than stellar pbp past. So, I'm probably still looking if you know anyone who may be interested.

I will also take this opportunity to mention that I am in a group that streams on twitch and we're trying to establish a fanbase. We're running a heavily modified version of Jade Regent. I'll spare you the details, but if you PM me I'll send you the info. We're a goofy bunch (as you'd probably imagine).

Setzer fails at hiding his scoff, ”An elven boogeyman with white hair and black skin? Huh, maybe I am part drow then?” He laughs heartily as he flips his fine white hair. ”So you three fought off some ruffians that raided the casino? My, that is impressive. It is comforting to know that I am in such talented company.” The smile fades from his face as he delves deeper into the past of the Gold Goblin, ”And this, Saul, was the previous owner? He is dead now… By your hand? I bet that is quite the story.” He trails off, uncertain as to whether or not he is delving too deep.

Once again, Setzer brightens up as Nel asks about his past, ”Ah, yes, my story is a strange one, indeed. I am searching for a friend who has gone missing. My childhood friend, Daryl. Due to a series of unfortunate events on the Storval Plateau, she was taken to the northwest and I wasted no time in trying to track her down. I have followed up on a number of leads, but none of them have yet to pan out. I spent last night asking around Riddleport, but didn’t learn anything new." He pauses as he scans the horizon, "I have a strong suspicion that she is to the north someplace, possibly in the mountains, but at this point I am just guessing. I applied for the job at the Gold Goblin to help fund my expedition. I had no idea the position would take me to such, ah, interesting locales as this.”

Setzer listens intently as Nel lays out a course of action, "Aha, yes, a plan! I am quite curious to see this "skymetal" for myself. To think that we may have the chance to handle material from the wondrous skies above is quite exhilarating, no?" His crimson eyes are wide with genuine wonder at the thought. His infatuation with the skies is clearly prominent on his face.

The notion doesn't last however, as he stops short at Nel's second point, "Ah, ahem, drow? I'm sorry, but could you refresh my memory as to what those are? Some sort of vile creature?"

As the group chooses a direction and sets off, Setzer puts slowly along in his flying throne, taking up the rear alongside Nel. He takes the opportunity to get to know her a bit better, "Lady Nel? Forgive my prodding, but in my experience, you have very little in common with many of the casino managers I've dealt with." He holds his hands up as if to ward off any seething rebuttal that may be forthcoming, "That is not to say I don't think you are qualified. Quite the opposite, actually. You seem to be a fine leader. How ever did you come to be in such a position?"

I'm pretty sure drow haven't been explained to Setzer, but if they have, feel free to ignore that second part. His memory is probably better than mine!

Setzer hovers in his throne with the others as they converse with the band of disheveled dwarves, "Hmmm, maybe that could be the giant cetipedes from the captain's fine tale of the island? Although, I don't believe I've heard of a bug bite that would bring one back from the dead. That is most disturbing."

Addressing the dwarf, "Ah, but where are my manners, I am Setzer Gabbiani, from Kaer Maga originally. Well met, Master Goldhammer. Tell me, have you come across any of the other groups currently scouring the island for treasures from this fallen star? We are very curious as to whom we will be dealing with. Ah, ahem, competing with, as it were." Setzer is clearly disappointed that he couldn’t convince the captain to stay, but it doesn’t diminish his positive demeanor, ”I understand, Captain. As the ship finally docks safely, Setzer waves the crew off of the larger crates, chests, or sacks. Manipulating the aether around them, he concentrates and the heavy objects glide lazily through the air to set easily onto the dock. (I can move up to 400 lbs.)

When that is done, he unfolds his floating throne and hops on, gliding along with the rest of the party as they disembark. He takes in the filthy band of dwarves as they approach, scanning the members of their band with interest.

Yes, that feature was enticing me, but I decided in the end that Setzer would do everything in his power to stay well away from any ghosts we may encounter. That, plus his smattering of arrogance made me decide against the purchase. ;)

Setzer looks out over the approaching island with a mix of wonder and trepidation. His eyes linger particularly on the crater, I wonder if that flying ship made a similar crater...

Taken from his reverie but the captain's words, Setzer walks over to the man with a smile, putting a hand on his back, "With troubled waters and thugs burning ships back in the city, wouldn't it be in your best interests to dock here a while? Your cut of the riches could be large indeed." His ruby eyes glitter at that last, hoping to entice the wary man.

Diplomacy: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (3) - 2 = 1 Welp, that went about as good as I'd expected.

If no one wants them then... We shouldn't buy them! Just a thought. Maybe I'll just pick up two for Pluck? I was just trying to be accommodating when I said I would purchase them all.

I figured I would throw them with my telekinetic blast, but I am not sure I would receive much benefit over just shooting the buggers (my blast does 2d6, holy water only does 2d4). So far we only have a desire for 2 so if anyone else wants to add to that amount please do so, and I will purchase no more than the desired quantity.

I have updated my profile, subtracting 42 gp and claiming 2 holy waters for myself. Feel free to split them up amongst yourselves as you see fit. Let's set sail for death awaits us all!

Setzer pipes in when Pluck mentions the swarms, "I believe my blasts should be able to take care of those, but in terms of the ghosts, well, yes, I would agree that there is wisdom in being prepared. I will pick up a few bottles of holy water tonight, if those of you familiar with Riddleport could recommend a place to do so. As you are aware, I am new to the city."

Being an early riser, and keeping in line with Setzer's earlier reasoning, he will elect to return to the Gold Goblin for the night, preferring a warm bed over a lurching hammock. He looks to Lina, "Foolish, eh? Well, call me a dullard then. I'll see you all first thing in the morning."

Setzer flies himself back to shore and then sets down, folding his flying throne away into his pack and scouting the city on foot. He asks around town for any information on Daryl's crash, or any other rumors of note.

I don't have a list of Riddleport points of interest in front of me, so just assumed he checked every major inn/tavern/public gathering place. I also buy X (I can't look up the price at work, however many you all think would be appropriate) bottles of holy water.

Setzer gives the captain a smile and a shrug, ”Ah, alas, it would appear I am already employed captain, but I do appreciate the offer.”

Setzer hears the words of the men on shore clearly, but the name doesn’t hold much sway with him, ”Zincher? The crime boss? Does he have some sort of vendetta with the Gold Gobin? Or perhaps he just wants all of the riches of the island to himself.”

Setzer is visibly relieved that they would be granted one more night of rest ashore before they embarked. He wasn’t exactly looking forward to sleeping in a hammock in the bowels of a listing ship. Again, Setzer gets wrapped up in the captain’s elaborate tale, ”A siren’s ghost, giant centipedes, murder, suicide, hidden treasures, and an ancient library. Sounds like quite the place. Rarely does reward come without a bit of risk, eh? I hope you all are as formidable as you appear. Most casino workers I know would stay well away from a place with that sort of reputation,” he says as he spins a red glass die between index and thumb.

Slothsy, if that's too many actions for Setzer feel free to alter things as you see fit. I just wanted to get that idea out of my head while it was rattling around in there. I'm still pretty frazzled after three days of shoveling... ;)
