Layla Isira's mother gave birth to her in a shanty in the slums of Sothis, the capital of the Osirion Empire. Layla never knew who her father was, but her mixed race heritage makes it obvious that he was an elf. Layla's mother never spoke of him, and Layla gave up pursuing any questioning at a young age.
Layla's mother's heritage was Mwangi, though she herself had been raised in Sothis. Layla and her mother scrabbled together a tough existence, begging, doing odd jobs, even stealing occasionally to make a living. Layla is sure her mother found other ways to make ends meet when necessary.
By the time she was 10, Layla was essentially independent, and she and her mother only dealt with one another to share what scant resources they could muster. At that age, Layla started wandering out into the deserts around Sothis, following merchant caravans, and, eventually, adventurers. She became increasingly bold. She sometimes found odd jobs within the merchant caravans, performing odd jobs for a few coppers.
At the age of 16, Layla found herself in the company of a group of adventurers who were seeking an ancient treasure in a crypt below a a pyramid not too far from Sothis. The party met an untimely demise, but Layla herself was untouched. Strangely, she felt herself coming under the protection of a mystical centipede. She and the centipede formed a bond, and Layla was able to escape from the tombs. The centipede helped her to learn how to channel certain arcane powers.
During the time that Layla was learning the arcane arts, she continued venturing into the tombs, tunnels, and crypts around Sothis. She learned to avoid trouble, but was able to to find enough treasure to rise above the poverty of her youth. She even helped her mother to a reasonably comfortable life. Sadly, her mother fell ill and died just a few months after moving into Layla's apartments.
The centipede (which she named Emuishere) continued to exert its influence with Layla. Layla became increasingly convinced that this was not a coincidence, and that she had a responsibility to restore Osirion to its former glory. She began discussing this with adventurers, and eventually found the Scarab Sages within the Pathfinder Society. Determining that they could help her achieve her goals, she joined that faction. Rechristening herself as Sekhmet, she set out to help locate treasures and tales that would achieve this aim.
Sekhmet is a tall, thin, striking black woman with jet-black hair in loose dreadlocks. Her centipede, Emuishere, usually makes its home somewhere in her hair, venturing out at night in search of food. Sekhmet can often be seen talking to or petting Emuishere. Sekhmet dresses in loose layers of cotton robes, allowing her to maintain comfort in almost any climate.
