=== Background ===

Although born on a ship and having spent much of his life on or around ships, Scienter does not think of himself as a pirate. Rather, Scienter regards pirates and their ships as a useful means to acquiring wealth.

Scienter realizes his skill with teleportation, summoning spells and fire spells, among other things, are ideally suited to piracy on the high seas. Of course that cannot be managed as a solo endeavor, hence Scienter's willingness to take up with pirates even as he tells himself he is not one of them and even as he finds their crude behavior and uneducated speech distasteful, with few exceptions. In the meantime, he has learned to do without the chest full of assorted materials normally required for spell casting - a ship on the high seas isn't going to have an arcane vendor near at hand. Scienter does not kill unnecessarily - ransom is often the more lucrative option, but he does so when necessary.

Because of his upbringing, Scienter has always been skilled at the tasks involved in maintaining a sailing ship. Although he would prefer to leave such mundane tasks to others, leaving him free to concentrate on higher level tasks, he will contribute as required.

Scienter plans to retire to a more scholarly lifestyle once he is independently wealthy, although he's always been vague as to how much wealth that would require.

Scienter has been in Port Peril for some time, but land bound after an unlucky turn of events resulted in the loss of the ship and crew with whom he had formerly been associated. He is on the lookout for a new situation.
