An educated young woman from Edinburgh comes to London to revolutionize British detective work with her exciting new ideas.
Description:
Scarlet is not her given name, but few Englishfolk can pronounce it in Gaelic, so she introduces herself that way now. She is a slight, tall young woman with slightly darker-than-average skin and the suggestion of elven features around her eyes and ears. Her hair is shockingly red and voluminous, and even pinned back in a bun it is still unruly. She wears a tweed jacket over cotton shirt and tie. She carries a light military saber on one hip and a revolver on the other. Her satchel has a round metal shield poking out of it. Though her voice has a hint of Scottish lilt to it, she speaks excellent English.
10 Minute Background:
Step 1(Write 5 background and concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the character. These can be a concept overview, a list of important life events, a physical description, a personality profile...whatever you need to get an image in your mind. 5 is just a minimum...more elements are encouraged!)
1. Scottish Catholic, though mother taught her to believe in fairies
2. Father was a famous military doctor who dabbled in detective work
3. Attended University of Edinburgh, studied medicine and military sciences
4. Served with distinction as an officer in the Third Burma War, returned to London as part of a grateful major-general's party
5. Extraordinarily observant
Step 2(List at least two goals for the character. At least one of these goals should be one that the character has, while another should be one that you, as a player, want to see developed over the course of the game.)
1. Since magic has ceased, many think it never existed. She wants to prove her mother was not crazy or misled by showing that fairies are real.
2. I'd like the characters to become the focus for the return of magic to the setting.
Step 3(List at least two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet.)
1. Scarlet claims to be Catholic, but she is actually pagan like her mother. It is a source of embarrassment to her father, and he strongly cautioned her against ever telling anyone the truth. Even admitting to being Catholic is dangerous in London.
2. When Scarlet's mother died, she went to join the fairies in the First World, opening a limited window between the two worlds on Scarlet's birthday (July 1st), her mother's birthday (March 1st), and the day her mother died (November 1st).
Step 4(Describe at least three people that are tied to the character. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile.)
1. Scarlet knows a Scot priest named Father Thomas, an old friend of her father, who she goes to for confession about once a month. He is a big man who drinks a lot, but he is well-schooled in theology and pleasant company.
2. There's a young street urchin who Scarlet knows only as "Mouse", who has proved willing to do odd jobs for her at reasonable prices, such as obtaining a three-week-old newspaper or watching a house.
3. Scarlet has garnered the attention of a gang of thugs from South London called the "Skulls", led by a man named "Big Bones", who she arrested early on in her career. The charge didn't stick, and they resented her interference in whatever racket they were running.
Step 5(Describe three memories, mannerisms, or quirks that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.)
1. Scarlet remembers with some trauma a pivotal moment in Burma when her unit was caught in an ambuscade, and they had to fight tooth and nail to break free to cover and regroup. Sometimes when she smells smoke, she can still hear the screams over the buzzing in her head.
2. Scarlet likes to shake hands when she meets someone new, even an enemy or suspected criminal.
3. Scarlet has lots of little superstitious actions, like throwing salt over her shoulder when she sits down to a meal, or leaving a bowl of milk outside once a week.
