Hmm. Seems my original post was swallowed up by the void. Here we go again. Sarien pulls two blue chips from those he's purchased and places them on the table. "I think I'll ease my way into the waters for now. Sarien had paid for 3 gold worth of chips: I'm thinking of 20 blue chips, and 1 yellow. So revised number would now be 18 blue.

"Good even'" Sarien says with a nod of the head and a smile. "I trust that the cooks were able to work out their...disagreements...enough to provide a proper meal? Or would I be better off avoiding it entirely?" He places two gold coins, fighting the urge to drop his smile at the cost, onto the bar. "Assuming that such dishes are edible in the first place, of course." Gold Goblin: About how much coin did those dwarves give Sarien to spend, anyway?

Rolling his eyes at the queue waiting to purchase chips, Sarien makes his way over to the bar. "I'd like to have a glass of your finest red, please," he says when he manages to get the attention of the tender.

Sarien, dressed in fine dark clothing with slashes of red silk and a black cloak across his shoulders, eyes the familiar elf from that morning standing amongst the boys with a curious glance. With a slight shrug and a smile he continues on, making his way through the cloud so that he can get a good look at the proprietor of the Gold Goblin and hear his opening words. Keeping a casual hand on his coin pouch, he makes his way into the building with the crowd, looking around at the games of chance and costumes of the employees.

Gold Goblin: Sarien nods with a slow smile. "Ah yes, thank you for the suggestion. My means are somewhat limited at the moment, due to certain commitments before me but it sounds like the 'Mystery' will be quite suitable. I've been having a bit of trouble finding the clothes I'm looking for in the book. It's similar to the Courtiers clothing (30 gp) but I'm thinking of something just a little less ornate and not requiring quite that much jewelry. So perhaps he'd buy clothing of the same value as the Courtier's outfit but less ornate and spend another 10 gold on a ring and fairly simple amulet. Does that make sense? He'll arrive at the grand opening more or less on time, ready to spend the coin the dwarves have given him.

"Oh yes, I am looking forward to seeing how things play out. It seems this 'Stumpy' fellow is placing all his coin on one bet. It could make for quite a show." "Ah yes, I have some things to see to as well. Fare thee well." Sarien offers a nod of farewell and makes his way off into the street. Gold Goblin: Now that Sarien's got a decent idea of the landscape around the Gold Goblin, he's going to just take a quick look at the neighboring streets before he goes in search of a clothing shop of modest price to purchase more appropriate clothes for the grand opening. He'll also check to see if there is any reasonably safe lodging in the general area.

Not wanting to draw any more attention to himself than necessary, Sarien releases the handles of the door and turns back toward the kitchen. "I guess we'll have to be ready to dodge some pots and pans if those two cooks haven't worked their anger out yet," he mutters to Phillip as he heads in that direction. At this point he's just planning to exit the building and circle around the back to get an idea of all possible routes of retreat. I expect he'll still be in the general area of the building when everyone else comes back down and/or out.

Sarien calmly regards the sailor. "No, it looks like everything is in order here, thank the gods. Carry on." Turning away, he glances down at Phillip. "Let's look over the grounds again. The lads had better be getting those crates cleared out of the way or there'll be hell to pay..." Paying no mind to the man at the bar, he begins making his way toward the door leading out to the front.

Sarien shakes his head at the argument but turns his attention to examining the main room. It's not as impressive as he'd expected, but he could see a lot of work being put into making the opening as grand as possible. Adopting an air of impatience, he walks over to the bar to look it over, wiping his hand on the wood as if to inspect for dust, and checking the boxed contents. He's just looking to get an idea of the quality of what's being served. Just in case it matters, Perception Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13

Sorry, just returned from the anniversary getaway. I wasn't planning to be in the hallway at the same time as everyone else. Sarien eyes the costumes with amusement for a moment and considers lifting a random horn or a tail but thinks better of it. Turning to Phillip he says, "Well, I guess that's all there is to see here. Let's head on downstairs, shall we?" He makes his way back to the stairs and heads down, turning toward the kitchen for a quick look.
Male Human Rogue (Investigator)/ 1
"Good day to you then," Sarien says and turns back down the hall. He heads back to where he saw the costumes and peeks into the room. If no one is currently in there, Sarien will step inside and look around for a moment, see what variety of costumes are there and if there's anything interesting. If someone is in there, he'll make his way back to the stairway.

"Silver is a fine thing for jingling in one's purse," Sarien says with an easy smile, "but for the gala I'd as soon be spending it as earning it. If things go well tonight, perhaps I'll check again. One night's work doesn't suit me quite as well as something a little more constant." He tips the woman a nod and begins to turn, but stops. "By the by, 'Old Stumpy?' Has the employer another name that I might know him by? I'm new in town, you see."

Sarien examines the window, noting if it opens and how, examining the tiles on the roof and contemplating a potential escape route for the future. Idly fingering the hilt of his sword, Sarien considers the door at the far end of the hallway marked with "Owner." "Should we see about meeting the owner, do you think? Or is that too conspicuous?" Uncertain, he wanders over toward what appears to be the waiting room, peeking inside and then making his way over toward the office door, listening carefully to see if he can hear anything within. A slow smile spreads across Sarien's face. "That's not quite what I had anticipated but it's clearly well worth the trip." He says softly, his eyes on the display. After a moment he forces himself to look away. "I wonder what's down this way?" He makes his way down the hallway to the east in search of that dusty window.

As Sarien walks into the courtyard of the Gold Goblin, he slows to take it all in. The original grandeur of the place that still remains is impressive but he's disturbed by the evidence of neglect and ill-repair. "The Gold on this goblin appears to be flaking rather badly," he comments dryly. He turns to the man who had guided them in. "Thank you for your assistance. We'd heard rumors of jobs available. Should we have an interest, would you know where we might inquire?" I'll roll the appraise check now, even though I'm not sure he'd be close enough to do it yet: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Sarien nods. "We got remarkably fortunate with the old-timer." He shrugs at the inquiry regarding his plans. "I'm uncertain as yet. If the rest of that crew are seeking employment there and actually get hired, I'm unsure I'd want to work beside them. Perhaps I'll just offer some coins to Desna and see what blessings she allows." He glances over at the halfling. "And you?"

Phillip Hargreaves wrote: Turning to Sarien and said in a partly serious voice Phillip muses "Let us try one more time to see if we can force reasonable passage... or perhaps we should just swim." Keeping his voice low, Sarien says, "I suspect we should expect to be cheated at every opportunity. So long as the only loss is to our coin as opposed to our necks, I will consider it a bargain." He raises a hand in greeting the old fellow that Phillip calls to, presenting his best smile.

Gold Goblin:
Aye, I thought as much, but I knew I had a busy day yesterday and didn't want to miss the opportunity to step aboard and leave the whole affair hanging. I should have known better to try to speed it all up! Sarien lets his palm fall on the hilt of his rapier as he follows Phillip. He says nothing to the rivermen but keeps his eyes on them, ready to act to protect himself if necessary.

Perception Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21 Sarien's eyes fix on Brett and his lips twist up in a half grin. He doesn't extend his hand. "The name's Sarien," he says diffidently. "You'll have to pardon me but where I come from, an arrangement is made before boarding. It wouldn't be proper for me to take a step onto another's property until terms have been agreed upon."

Gold Goblin wrote: As Sarien nurses his drink in the morning room, waiting for Phillip to return from nature's call, his isolation is intruded upon by a gravelly har-rumph at his elbow. He turns on his barstool to find one of the dwarves from the long table standing a little self-consciously behind him. "Pardon," he says gruffly, "but would you and your friend be going to the Goblin this evening?" He stabs a finger half-heartedly at the abandoned handbill on the bar as he shifts his weight from one foot to the other. Sarien drops a few copper coins on the bar and glances over at the dwarf. "I can't speak for my companion, but I'm planning to attend. Why do you ask?"

Phillip Hargreaves wrote: A quaff before talking with Sarien in more hushed tones "Seems these lot are looking for the same place we are... though if it's ok with yourself I'd give them a fair head start afore we set out ourselves? I'd prefer to not be seen as friends for walking close to them." Sarien finishes his wine and nods. "Agreed. Better to keep a certain distance from the trouble some of them are likely to bring."
Male Human Rogue (Investigator)/ 1
Sarien raises his eyebrows in amusement at the outburst from the dandy who'd been talking to the tiefling. "That one's awfully touchy to be in a city like Riddleport. If he takes offense that easily, the odds of his survival here are probably worse than those awaiting clientele at this new casino. He takes another sip at his wine to help ease the laughter wanting to bubble out of his throat.

Phillip Hargreaves wrote: With a hint of a smirk in the corner of his mouth Phillip agrees "Oh aye, insight indeed..." to hearts and purses both "...will your interests engage your time today or have you it free to your own devices?" Sarien allows a smile to touch his lips. "Oh, I have no other plans today. I might just choose to attend this grand opening." He tenses a little at the commotion that accompanies the revelation of the Tiefling but he relaxes again when he sees her making no further movement. The horned woman was certainly an attractive one but he saw no reason to be alarmed by her presence.

Sarien listens to the conversation swirling around him while he sips at his wine, a small smile touching his lips as he watches the flamboyant displays and words of the new arrivals, offering so much information about themselves without thought or concern. If Riddleport was as rough as the sailors of the Rude Curse warned, he wondered how long these newcomers would last.
Male Human Rogue (Investigator)/ 1
Sarien pauses with his wine glass half-raised to drink as the other newcomers arrive, chattering away like a roost of magpies. He allows a taste to wet his lips. "I'm just a traveler from here and there," he answers the bartender. "But it looks like you're a bit busy of a sudden."
Male Human Rogue (Investigator)/ 1
Sarien studies the exterior of the establishment for a moment, wondering just how trustworthy the sailors aboard the Rude Curse actually were. But the Publican House looks well-kept and comfortable and he decides that if the sailors had meant him ill they'd probably have acted while he was still aboard ship. Eying the sign forbidding Cyphermages with amusement, he walks in. Knowledge Local: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21 He carefully examines the room, noting the exits and tips the halfling woman a nod and a smile. "Good morning to you. Tea room, eh? I suppose that's a decent start." Knowledge Local: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20 He nods again and makes his way through the doorway, eying the mismatched furniture and the large man with his notched sword. Knowledge Local: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16 "Aye, that I am," Sarien says with an easy smile. "The lady out there says this is the tea room? I hope it's not too early for something a little sharper. I'd appreciate a glass of red to start." He takes a seat at the bar, seeking a chair where he could keep an eye on the other occupants.
