Sakiko, Halfling Shrine Maiden

An orphan of the wars Sakiko grew up under the care of her grandfather. But as the years passed, Sakiko's grandfather started to tangle with the fact that he would not be around forever to care for her. Though he was at peace with death on most levels, this grated him. But he had not come this far without being resourceful! A few weeks before her eleventh birthday he journeyed to the small shrine outside the village. When he return he brought with him a promise of apprenticeship at the shrine for Sakiko. He also brought a small silvery fox called Ryo; a gift from the spirits he claimed. To watch over her when he was gone.

Being a shrine maiden was though work. One was expected to maintain and clean the shrine then also have time to study and learn the sacred texts and rituals. But Sakiko was nothing if not diligent. And she found that once she called out the proper words the ancestors would whisper back secrets and encouragement, the same help her grandfather used to provide.

Trials

One day an old warrior arrived at the shrine with his entourage. As age was rapidly catching up to him, he was looking to train an apprentice. To this end he had designed three days of trials - and the priests of the shrine had agreed to host the spectacle. Sakiko watched in wonder as hopefuls from all around the realm flocked around her home - people from far beyond her own small world. Urged on by Ryo and the spirits, Sakiko decided to make an attempt at the trials. It couldn't do any harm could it? And this was certainly something else then her quiet life! On the first day of trials she woke early so that she could complete most of her chores in time to participate.

At the end of the day she was tired and bruised, but content. It had turned out that she was not the fastest runner, nor the swiftest swimmer or best swordman. But she had made a good showing and that was all she could hope for. On the second day, she had to wake up even earlier - just so that she could do all the little things she was supposed to! Yawning she found out that the second day was a test of wits. Turns out she wasn't the smartest applicant either. But the puzzles were fun at least. The third day - the third day was hard. Even earlier she woke up, consumed several cups of tea to stay up, and quickly went about with her duties to clear as much of her backlog as possible. The trials had been interesting but she was glad that they were soon over.

When Sakiko arrived for the day's trials she found the old swordsman locked in a deep meditation, not communicating with anyone. A bit confused by the circumstances the applicants soon figured out that this was probably a part of their trials. But how? Some applicants sat down in meditation with the swordsman. Some merely waited for instructions to come. And some left in frustration. Sakiko tried to join those meditating, but quickly grew uneasy. There were things she was supposed to do. While she could rationalise slinking away from work to participate in tests of wits or brawn, this was a bit silly. She wasn't *doing* anything. With a sigh she rose and quickly headed back to work. It had been fun while it lasted. By lunch she had completed her tasks and went back to check in with the old warrior. He had still not spoke or moved. The crowd were down to about half its previous size. Seeing as people were starting to leave, Sakiko joined the other priests and started cleaning the shrine up. By dinner time she checked in yet again; no movement from the warrior and the crowd were about half of the lunchtime size. By sundown there were only a handful applicants left. Finally the warrior moved! He rose to his feet and announced that he would choose an apprentice at first light. Exhausted from the three days of trials and work, Sakiko went to sleep soon after.

Half an hour before sunrise, much earlier then any time she wanted or was supposed to wake, Sakiko was stirred from her slumber by insistent poking. She blinked and looked around in confusion - which only grew when she realized that it was the high priest that had awakened her. He insisted, with a small but prideful smile, that she may want to be present at the upcoming ceremony. Only half awake Sakiko got dressed and ready and headed to the central floor of the shrine. As the first rays of sunlight started to crawl across the horizon, the old warrior emerged from his chambers. In his hands he carried a sheathed sword. Swiftly he strode towards the small gathering of hopefuls and halted in front of Sakiko. She barely had time to blink before he dropped the sword in her lap. With a gasp at its surprising weight she caught it. The old man straightened his back and announced in a clear voice:

"Our land is at peace. I came not in search of the strongest nor most cunning warrior. I came in search of the most dutiful one, to carry this ancient oath. And I have found her."

Thus Sakiko the strine maiden came to possess Ajani, the sword of duty.

Now?

The times changed quickly. Trouble is brewing and it was her duty to pick up her sword. Will she persevere? Her master trained her well and she fought in a handful skirmishes gallantly. But in truth, that matters little. What matters is her oath to keep - the Sword of Kings must be secured at any cost.
