As the title suggests, please give feedback (what else I should consider or what I'm missing) as I've never actually played a bard before.

I plan to roll a bard 'sandman' in a new campaign. I'd like to make him quite the charmer and thief. I do NOT want to multiclass or do any dipping.

Planned feats:

Spell focus enchantment, greater sf enchantment, skill focus knowledge (not sure which), eldritch heritage (arcane - thrush familiar ), improved eldritch heritage (more spells), greater eldritch heritage (school power enchantment) .

I'd learn the masterpiece 'at the heart of it all' sacrificing a lvl 3 spell.

Basically the idea is this: my absolutely adorable lil halfling minstrel waddles his way up to stage and starts performing. Using his special sandman powers and high sleight of hand, the unsuspecting (rich) victim becomes powerless to my charm and opposed charisma rolls. And no one even knows any funny business went on!

So what do you guys think? What am I missing?

Also what skills do I need. I was thinking with favored class and a 14 intelligence, I'd grab:

Stealth, sleight of hand, bluff, perform (string), acrobatics, disable device, diplomacy, umd, and one other...

As the Chinese say, "hao bu hao?" Good or not good?

Tell me please!

Ryzn

doh! Completely forgot that Sandman doesn't get versatile performance.

Okay...back the drawing board

Hey gang,

I'm thinking about rolling a 'Sandman' Bard who would focus on charming and thieving.

Initially I thought I would go Human as I'd like as many skills as possible, but with versatile performance that might not be an issue. So now I'm considering making him a halfling for the bonuses and innocent look. Roleplaying-wise, I'd probably love either one. Other than not wanting to be a shorty or the extra feat, are there any reasons to go Human over halfling? Am I correct to assume versatile performance and an intelligence of 12 or 14 will keep me swimming in skills?

Thanks for any and all advice!

My hunt to find the right type of enchanter/trickster has led me to rolling a 'Sandman' bard. I see him getting higher enchantment DCs than most Sorcerers (while stealthed) with all the fun skills to influence and play with the newly enthralled.

After searching the boards though, I still have a couple questions about this archetype:

1)Does the "Master of Deception" class feature truly make him the master of deception or do other classes have him beat at bluff, stealth, and sleight of hand? As it looks with those being class skills, a high cha/dex bard would have a pretty insane skill bonus on them that would be hard to beat.

Also, it mentions the ability to disable magical devices, but is it still not a class skill? And if it's not, is there any way to make it a class skill through the rules?

2)If you wanted to make him a great enchanter and thief, what feats would you suggest?

Thanks for any and all advice fellas!

Solid advice fellas and excellent writeup Tonyz. New insights and tactics on one of my favorite spells. I'll definitely be pumping that Diplomacy.

Is there anything else that adds to one's Charisma based checks that you can think of?

Anyone have a link to a good variety of pregens?

Any Enchantment gurus out there that know how to get the most out of charm person?

I would like to know how to really force my charmed 'friends' to do exactly what I tell them (without casting a higher level enchantment spell). My problem is that even with my high charisma there's still a good chance I'll lose the opposed charisma roll. Are there any feats or class features that can help an enchanter or bard hedge his bets?

Thanks!

Ryan
