Thanks for the answers so far guys.

The specific instance was there was a fountain who's water would cast Harm on anyone who touched it. So obviously I couldn't cover that with lead ;). He was able to detected necromancy aura coming from the water, and that's when he said he wanted to do a spellcraft check to determine what spell was cast on it, and that's where the questions came up. Later on there was a area of floor that had teleportation circle on it and the same debate came up.

Hi all,

I recently got into a debate with my players, one of whom has permanent Detect Magic and a high Spellcraft skill. The argument came up when he tried to use Detect Magic + Spellcraft to determine all the properties of a magic trap in front of the party. According to Detect Magic:

If the aura emanates from a magic item, you can attempt to identify its properties (see Spellcraft).

My argument was the trap isn't considered a magic item, and if it was he'd need to be holding it (as an item) to thoroughly examine it, as per the Identify spell. His argument was that all magic comes in as an item or an effect, a trap would be an item, and that the spellcraft check in Detect Magic doesn't say you have to closely examine it (like Identify does).

I've done quite a bit of searching, but my google-fu hasn't brought me any answers. What's the correct ruling here?

This came up in a recent session and there's been some debate on how to rule on it. Here's the scenario:

Our Monk performed a successful grapple action on the npc, then proceeded to move the grappled creature through squares threatened by each PC, invoking AoO each time.

At the time we ruled that the npc gets a chance to break it each time it moves through a threatened square where it can be attacked. Now later on I found the "drag" combat maneuver listed on the SRD site, which specifically states there's no AoO on a successfully dragged creature unless the Greater Drag feat is known. The grapple description does not say one way or the other.

So the question is, does moving a grappled creature through a threatened square provoke an AoO? Or does that only happen with a drag combat maneuver with Greater Drag feat?
