Varynnia was born the middle daughter of Devina Kath, head of House Kath. With her attractive features, charming personality, and beautiful singing voice, Rynia (as she was known by family and friends) was destined for great things in a noble house that patronized the arts to such a great extent. That is, she would have been destined for great things, if it wasn’t for her penchant for causing trouble.
Rynia always got into mischief, and when she became a teenager, it began to get to a point that it was causing her parents no end of embarrassment and grief. She was regularly brought home by the City Watch, and it was only because of who her parents were that she didn’t end up in the courts. Unfortunately, a particularly serious prank involving a stinking cloud spell released during a performance at the Crown Theater forced her parents to make the difficult decision to send Rynia away to a boarding school near Carper’s Bay when she was 15.
While the discipline of the school did serve to “calm” her (a little), her free-spirited personality chafed under the constant oversight of the school masters, and she hated it. As she began approaching her 18th birthday, she began noticing some strange things – she was able to manifest small amounts of cold and ice, and her body temperature was noticeably cooler than everyone else’s (though she never felt chilly). A smart girl, she realized she might be showing the first signs of sorcerous ability. Several months of practice and experimentation brought her a measure of control over her abilities, and then it was only a matter of time before she decided to leave her ‘prison’ once and for all.
Though she probably could have gone anywhere, Rynia went back to Ptolus, trusting that the city was big enough for her to go relatively unknown and unseen for some time. On the way back, she met up with several other folk headed there, and finding them interesting (and therefore, fun), she has tagged along on their travels.
The boarding school rubbed off on Rynia more than she knows. While she is still a bit immature, vain, flirty, and impulsive, she has mellowed a bit. She no longer looks at people of lower classes as beneath her, and doesn’t really care if she’s rich or not (so long as she has enough to keep in relative comfort, of course – she doesn’t want to live on the street). She has always had distaste for violence and bloodshed, preferring talking first, then non-lethal means of resolving conflicts. However, she’s no pacifist, and if someone hurts her or her friends, she can and will respond in kind if she has to.
