reflex: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28 The paniced troll rushed through the portal, not really because he was supposed to, but because somewhere in his addled mind he recognized it as a way to get far away from the terrible trees. He didn't fall in when he reached the edge of the cliff that dropped off into the water below, but he didn't stop either. Instead he went right over the edge head first clinging to the cliff wall like a spider. Still panicked, have to keep moving away from the trees. Spider Climbing down the cliff.

Being the new guy and having never seen how combat works in this game before, I have a few questions- My character is built around the use of combat reflexes to make extra attacks and to redirect attacks against allies to himself. How do I know when I'm allowed to take Attacks of Opportunity? How do I know who's adjacent to me and who isn't?

"Stay close to me, Metalbeard. You will be kept safe." The grey-skinned troll moved to the front of the group and a length of chain with a weighted spike descended slowly from one of his sleeves. That goes for the rest of you too. Once you're outside my reach I can't help you.

GM, looking at the Rope Dart like you mentioned, it's listed as a Ranged weapon, meaning that it does not Threaten (same as the whip), and cannot be Finessed because it's not for melee. Are you house-ruling it to be a melee weapon, or were you thinking of another finesse-able reach weapon?

The creature that had been quietly standing nearby as the queen had spoken (and in her presence nearly every time they had ever seen her, they now recalled) was unlike any troll they had ever heard of. For starters, he stood only about the height of a tall man rather than the usual towering girth trolls were known for. His skin and muscles were grey and taught, corded and wiry, not green and thick. He wore a simple hooded robe like some kind of monk. His hood hiding most of his face until she addressed him. Without a word he stepped forward and lowered his hood revealing slate-grey eyes that reflected light like a night-predators and a wide, thin-lipped mouth. His arms hung nearly to his knees and he was barefoot carrying no visible weapons. He bowed respectfully to the metallic creature she had called Metalbeard.
That would be fine by me. His backstory is pretty straightforward. He was left for dead as a child because of his small stature but was lucky to be adopted by a martially inclined githzerai temple and was raised with values very different from his instincts. When the temple was raided by the githyanki, he was left homeless and alone, eventually making his was to sigil. For a troll he's practically a genius and surprisingly social. He hates his heritage and his own mental limitations, desperately wanting to be smarter. I am pretty busy this weekend, but I'll finish the crunch and backstory on Monday night.
Orphax here. So I had another idea for a meatshield along a similar vein but perhaps more suited to a Planescape game. I wanted to play an outcast Troll sellsword specializing in bodyguard work. Here's the basic mechanics. His schtick is going to be using a reach weapon to take advantage of attacks of opportunity, and using the Bodyguard feats to take damage meant for other people. I wanted to get your ok before I spent a bunch of time fleshing out a character that you were going to deny. What do you think? |
