"You might actually do well to try to bring it back, if you can harness it," Rubeg says, shaking his head at the others. "The way it could protect students from your books. They could spend time working on things that will actually work instead of risking themselves with those words!"

I'll put it on a Level 1, please. It may have to wait until the final inventor comes out, but I think I like Rubeg. I'll keep him in the eventual rotation.

Rubeg shakes his head, though studiously avoids looking at the paperwork. "You are speaking of perhaps the First World, yes, yes, yes? The strange realm of the fey allows for shapes and structures that most people--" it seems clear Rubeg perhaps thinks that excludes himself "--could not create. But it's a false tautology to envision doing that here because of course, without bringing in aspects of the First World into this dimension, it wouldn't exist at all. But if you are in the First World, the idea of dimensions and even descriptions change, so ... there's simply no way to make it all work!

Yeah, that's a big bunch of gibberish. To go with another bad roll.

Rubeg looks around to see what the others want to do. He's still voting for homework, but only because he stinks at all the other options here.

Rubeg hrumphs, ready to stump forward and show this creepy halfling that he can certainly figure out any sort of problem, even if the others can't.

"What is this homework? I'm not looking at the paper and letting your words steal mine from my brain!" he asks sharply.

"I think it was likely stuck here -- perhaps it was summoned to be a janitor or some other sort of menial role -- and is trying to show that it knows more than the idiot students?" Rubeg theorizes. "I've heard of almost just such a thing happening at the Clockwork Cathedral, and we're not that far. It may also be confused, and not be intending to hurt anyone at all. Like when an experiment explodes just as some idiot children are getting too close, and probably trying to claim credit for it themselves."

It seems possible Rubeg is talking less about the academy than the cathedral.

"Fascinating. Why did they attack us, though, and not the students, who are apparently out here regularly, yes, yes, yes?" Rubeg mutters aloud as he investigates the statues remains. He looks to see if there's anything he might be able to scavenge for his own purposes, since that could be of far greater value than gold.

Rubeg groans as the statue runs over him, so surprised that he barely tries to get out of the way. Shaking his head to clear it, he growls at the statue. "I thought they only moved at night!" he calls out, personally offended that he was lied to.

Realizing what's going on, he tries to quickly Disable the Device ... to no avail. Crafting (trained): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17 Unwilling to move again and risk being trampled further, he raises his shield.

"Yes, that makes sense!" Rubeg agrees with Farzin. "Let's go see this yard. There seem to be planar rifts throughout this school, so perhaps that is what is moving the statues."

Was I able to get my last 4 hp healed? If not (yet), not a big worry.

Rubeg groans in relief as Berry's ministrations help with the worst of his wounds, though he's still in some pain 4 hp down, if we have time.

Still believing it's likely there's some noise coming from the teachers' lounge, Rubeg begins investigating the room's acoustics, using the knowledge he picked up from his own studies -- a sonic retort against anyone that his him would be quite the innovation, if he could just figure it out without blowing out his own eardrums!

Letting his shield fall for a moment, Rubeg uses that hand to pull a few levers on his armor, which starts whirring and clattering alarmingly, as if it might explode. Still, it seems to keep itself together as he hefts his shield again, followed a moment later by his hammer. He brings the latter down, a piston on his small arm pulling with the motion to slam the hammer into the creature with a reverberating crash.

"Among the simple sciences, it can be," Rubeg answers Berry, in case some other voice does not. "Certain students with less aptitude create concoctions to help them be more aware. Or less aware, if that's possible. You can blow things up, which is quite nice."

He heads to the beakers to see what exactly they were learning here.

"Yes, yes, yes, indeed," Rubeg agrees. "I would venture to say most of the time in fact. Simple minds dismiss what they don't understand as magic, but really it's all just a different sort of science, no?"

He looks around, trying to see how it could be camouflaged.

Rubeg shakes his head.

"All of us can go in the lab," he says. "We just won't find this supposed door if we don't go one at a time down the hall. Likely a trick of mirrors or something, but we shall see. Perhaps that's related to the door? Whatever's on the other side may well be what's whispering the wrong answers."

Two different mysteries here: The Cheater’s Whisper: If you can’t figure out what to do in lab, just whisper a question under your breath! You’ll hear the answer in your ear. Be careful, though; a lot the answers are wrong.

The Disappearing Door: If you’re walking alone to the lab, a door appears just before it. If you’re walking with anyone else, though, the door doesn’t exist!

Rubeg squints as he examines the focus. "That makes sense. Cause and effect. But what is it doing here?" he wonders. "Then again, it seems to have been here for some time, based on the grout. Wonderful stuff, grout. It can last for ages."

Attention called back to the present, he nods.

"Yes, yes, yes. One at a time. To the lab. Hopefully there will be something more interesting there!"

He shakes his head.

"There would be no reason for the supposed ghost to be mad at you, so logic would dictate it is something other than that, yes?"

"Perhaps someone realized -- and is trying to make sure others realize -- that true knowledge is in our heads, not in the books," Rubeg theorizes, carefully not looking at the tomes. "After all, if you could truly get knowledge from books, why do wizards constantly need to read them every morning? Why do alchemists not just know their formulas. You don't see me needing to check how to make my armor every morning!"

Society (trained): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14 I guess trying to use this to think about what purpose their might be in having the books erase. Which of course seems perfectly smart to a goblin!

Rubeg's lip curls at the books. This is the problem. This is why they can't figure out anything, because they lose their minds in there. I suppose that's why I'm wearing this armor, instead of sweeping their floors still!

"They're better blank," he says with a grunt, then makes his way to the shelves, to see if he can find whatever mechanism must be there to move the cursed collections around. Looking around the shelves, trying not to read any of the tomes, even if my genius does not really require words.

"Yes, yes, yes, the classroom usually has something interesting in it," Rubeg agrees. "Something that the supposed students can't figure out, even though it's very obvious!"

He follows Flint, his largest hammer in hand and shield on his other arm. He looks around defensively.

"There could be a ghost bear in here!"

"Hmm," Rubeg says, eying the amulet. "Typical. This won't work at all. You need much more ingenuity if you want success, yes?

"This looks like a failed shop class project."

He turns to J.

"People don't always see what we really are, do they?"

As the Pathfinders question J, a loud clanking starts making itself heard, clearly moving steadily closer toward the entrance of the Academy. Before it can become the source of a new rumor, it resolves itself to a rushing goblin, his small form clad in a wild array of clockwork armor.

"Oh, I see how it is!" he accuses at the moment he arrives. "Just start without Rubeg. I'm sure he'll bring nothing to the mission, just let him go back to washing floors and scrubbing walls. As if any of you know what an honest day's work is! Or could figure out the secrets of the Clockwork Cathedral!"

In addition to his armor -- which gives the illusion that he's bigger than he is, as he seems to be on foot-high boots -- he wears a number of tools of various sorts on his bandoliers, with several hammers of various sizes hanging from his belt and a large shield strapped across his bacl.

He snatches the folder, brows furrowing as he furiously looks at the document and then throws it back at Farzin once he realizes what's in it.

"Words? Words? All the words they spend their time with in the Cathedral, and look where they are? Makes you wonder why, hmm? Didn't take me any words to figure out my armor!"

Once fully caught up on the situation, he calms down slightly, though a small scowl remains on his face.

"Do you have a map of your so-called Academy?" he asks.
