Here is the profile for my Halfling Cavalier. I took Standard Bearer archetype to avoid having a wolf at 1st level and bringing it into Sandpoint. I will choose a riding dog as a mount at 5th level.
Hey there, I'm indeed having trouble keeping up with the games due to RL stuff. I think it might be better if I stepped down and let you move on at your pace. It was fun while it lasted guys, thanks for your time and efforts and I hope to play with you again some time in the future.
"A lunch is fine with me" says Rory, listening to his rumbling belly.
"I could make them cheaper, given the time", Rory shrugs. "But suit yourself."
"Well, perhaps your potions can help change that."
Knowledge (nature): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21 to recognize what the fang berries are and how to gather and store them.
"Where do you usually forage for the fang berries, sir? Perhaps we could bring you some if we find them on our travels."
Rory springs up with interest. "Really? I'm Rory, an alchemist. Until recently, I lived in a cabin much like yours and was quietly experimenting, but now I was sent onto this expedition. Mind if we exchange some of the recipes?"
"Nice to meet you Bokken. You live here but you can't say much? Why would that be?"
Rory had to spend 4 hours and 50gp brewing the potions. He had 24 gp, earned 101 and spent 50, leaving him with 75gp. Now ready.
Can we learn anything about the two regions in advance? If not, then it's just a matter of chance.
Rory can copy Shield and Identify spells from Halloran's spellbook.
Apparently, it requires DC16 Spellcraft check, which Rory currently is not trained in. Level 2 can't come soon enough.
Rolling for Shield:
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
That's 3 hours to copy.
Rolling for Identify:
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
That's 1 hour to copy.
Now Halloran can order 2 potions from me :)
Just a heads up - Rory will give Halloran his formula book, but it's going to be useless - the rules say the formulas can't be copied out of it.
"And without music, I'm afraid. Master Westover, I can prepare you a free potion for every spell I manage to copy from your spell book. Is that a deal?"
"Partially. I have not yet established the limits of mutual interconnections between the two. So far I have a proven case that some formulas can be derived from spells. Perhaps there are spells in which the elements could not easily be derived, or prove unstable when mixed, or even lethal. I also have some formulas which do not have equivalent spells; they are to do with bombs and mutagens. Lastly, alchemy can be used to treat wounds, which wizards are unable to do."
"Well I suppose they are, but just as we have wizards who follow strict procedures to invoke magical effects and sorcerers who rely on inborn ability, so, too, we have naturally-occurring and artificial manifestations. My work is more akin to wizardry than sorcery."
"I don't know much about planar creatures. My guess is that the concentration of raw magical elements is much higher in the Outer Planes, which leads outsiders to have inborn magical ability. But that doesn't concern me much, my field of research is extracting the formulas from the manifestations of magic which allow to store the magical energy in form of an alchemical extract and transfer it to an individual who otherwise doesn't have magical ability."
"You see, I've come to a conclusion that magic is a part of nature. We have all read and some may have even seen naturally occurring creatures which wield what effectively is magic, we call them fey creatures. By analyzing the properties of nature, I have been able to distill elements which in right concentrations and mixtures evoke magical energies in the imbiber. The next step is to compare these elements with the notations used in arcane arts and see if there are any similarities.
I've tried it once before and it worked. I have successfully been able to distill extracts which can be used to enlarge or reduce people, like them wizards do. It is some ways like brewing a potion, but the process is more... refined. I am not quite sure if the process works the other way round, since my formulas rely on releasing the magical energy already contained in the natural components, while you wizards seem to channel it out of thin air."
Rory comes up to Halloran, unusually timid.
Master Westover, I have been watching your performance when we were fighting the bandits, and I must say I'm impressed with your magical arsenal. What would you ask for allowing me a peek into your spellbook to try and derive the alchemical formulas for duplicating some of your spells' effects? Under your close supervision, of course.
"Of course, before striking the deal, you should keep in mind their idea of valuables primarily involves food, and food primarily involves moon radishes", Rory chirps in.
"Perhaps now that we captured those, they will become less common", Rory grins. "I can't tell if that bothers you or makes you happier, though."
Halloran is on his way to becoming the kingdom treasurer :) Rory also doesn't have Appraise.
"Greetings. We did find the camp and we brought some more prisoners into your fort. I hope the first batch didn't cause any trouble?
As for the moon radishes, in all fairness, we bought them."
Rory's frown turns into a grin. "Hell, if it means the first protectorate of Brevoy in the River Kingdoms will be a kobold tribe, I'm up for it. Shame I can't see the Lords's faces when they hear about it though."
"Well, if befriending the wretches means sparing us fighting them, then I'm alright with it. Although it would seem they were perfectly happy to be left alone on their radish patch."
"Remind me again, why are we interested in a lizard mooning over some radishes?", Rory grumbles at Halloran.
This place sure has lots of elks, eh Silstaren? I hope they don't attract any predators to our camp.
Rory would opt to be on the first watch.
"Well, that means you're halfway to a sensible man.", Rory adds.
"I don't like that one of them feigned dead and ran away, but I hope he wasn't the leader. Let's see if we can find something about this Stag Lord the bandits mentioned."
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Better late than never, I guess :)
Rory moves out into the open to get a clear shot at the tree bandit.
Move DD10->BB7
Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 6 + 1 = 25
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Rory sends yet another bullet at the bandit threatening Halloran and Eamon, before continuing to circle around the battlefield behind the logs.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (20) + 6 - 4 = 22
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Crit confirm: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 6 - 4 = 16
Crit Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 3) = 8
Move AA12->DD10
Rory shoots another bullet at the male bandit threatening Halloran, and sidesteps to BB12 meant to do it last turn, but mistyped
Attack: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 6 - 4 = 16
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6
Level 2 can't come soon enough. Also the ladies seem to appreciate persistence, Halloran. Maybe that Hand of yours will become more expert in time ;)
Seeing as tossing any more bombs into the fray is dangerous, Rory twirls his slingstaff and sends another bullet into the male bandit, then steps sideways to cover behind a log.
Attack at X9, Move to AA12
attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17, -4 penalty for firing into melee
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1
I think the procedure was to dine them first, before hurling one's staff at them. But I've been married for almost 5 years, times may have changed.
Rory moves out into the clearing under the tree stump AA12 and throws a bomb into the bandit sitting on a tree, where it makes a small but loud BOOM.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 6 - 2 = 22 vs. Touch AC
Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8 (no splash)
Rory jogs forward to CC15, and drinks another extract from his belt. Targeted bomb admixture
back in action, thanks
Rory moves to CC17 through the undergrowth and releases a bullet from his sling staff towards the bandit on the platform pointed out by Royston.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 + 20 ⇒ (7) + 5 + 20 = 32
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Not sure about range/cover penalties
Sorry guys, I caught a flu and won't be able to keep up for a while. Please bear with me for a few more days.
A little initiative won't hurt, I guess :)
Init: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
As soon as Eamon strides forward, Rory uncorks a small vial with oily transparent liquid and downs it in one big gulp, before starting to wheel his slingstaff in the air.
Rory's first action - True Strike extract
Rory frowns as he whispers to those around him: I have a bad feeling about this. They look well-prepared, as if they've been expecting us. We may have lingered too long and they know something happened to the first group, or there could be foul play involved. Perhaps one of the captured bandits communicated with the base camp by magic. I say we should use the element of surprise and strike first, while we can.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16
Rory will take CC19 as the starting point.
Rory will attempt to circle around the camp while staying hidden in the undergrowth. Upon hearing Eamon's voice, he will drink the true strike extract and prepare to attack if the bandits don't surrender.
Stealth: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
I'd rather try to snipe them from the undergrowth as someone more heavily-armored engages them, Rory chips in, otherwise agreeing with Halloran's plan.
Rory returns to the main group to inform them of the imminent battle.
He eyes Halloran and smiles wryly, noticing that the man's insight has allowed him to make appropriate preparations.
He uncorks a flask and drinks the contents in a big gulp, gritting his teeth to suppress the gag reflex. His pupils become catlike, and his movements unnaturally smooth.
Dexterity mutagen, Dex becomes 20, Wis becomes 10 for ten minutes
I didn't hear anything, but one can never be too careful, Rory replied in a whisper. He dropped prone and crawled forward, with the prowess acquired during his army service.
Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Rory produces the alchemist's kit from his backpack and begins preparing his concoctions, filling the area with a mixture of sweet and bitter smells. In about an hour he is done. He goes to sleep early, with the intention of getting up before dawn (about the same time as the last watch starts) and gathering his herbs and mushrooms from the local meadow.
Rory, who didn't understand a word of the conversation in the reptilian language, mutters under his breath: "Stopping by the kobolds to buy passage past them, what's next? Asking the bandits to rob us blind?"
He then trots off on his mule.
Rory stands with a grimace on his face, leaning on his slingstaff.
"Would you rather waste your efforts on lizards, knowing there is an assault on bandit camp in front of us? How merciful of you, Royston. I say, let's leave their precious radish patch and ride on."
Does Rory know anything about the moon radish, its effects on kobolds and possible uses by humans?
