Roland wanders around aimlessly, just waiting for the caravan to depart...

"Go talk to the defense attorney, Gustav Kaple. He's at the Courthouse, Probably trying to think of some other way to screw up." she rubs her temples.

Erm...anyway.

With the books delivered to Professor Crowl, the group can return to Judge Daramid for their reward. She parcels it out to each of you.

+1000 gp for everyone!

"There is one other matter I'd like to discuss with you." she says before you can leave, or even count the money.

"You seem competent, and Lorrimor trusted you, so I will as well. I need some help."

"There is a cancer in Lepidstadt, and has been for some time. It grows steadily and threatens to taint everything around here. It hides behind a scapegoat, and though I do not know its face, I know this darkness exists. For years this city and province has laid all its ills, both minor and major, at the feet of the Beast of Lepidstadt. I think someone, or something has been taking advantage of that easy scapegoat to get away with its crimes."

"There are many stories about the Beast, exaggerated tales of its cruelty or savagery, but there are just as many, if not more, of it helping people. Saving children, rescuing loved ones or people in distress. The people here are quick to forget, but I am not. Now that the Beast is in need of aid, nobody will step forward to repay that kindness, but I intend to do my best to see it gets at least one thing: A fair trial."

"I can't interfere directly. It would ruin my reputation as an unbiased Judge, as I am presiding over the trial with two of my colleagues. I need people without local bias, who know nothing of the Beast's alleged actions, to investigate the crimes he's been accused of. The one he was eventually caught for, the University break-in, is especially suspect. Why would an intelligent creature knowingly go somewhere where it is sure to be trapped and apprehended, just to damage a lecture room?"

"No, I don't buy it for a second. I want you to investigate on my behalf. I want to know nothing of your findings; You and I never had this conversation, and I will deny any involvement in setting you on this path. I don't expect you to get the Beast off, I simply want you to bring the truth to light, and let justice prevail."

"Should you accept, I'm prepared to double Lorrimor's bequest to you. Another 100 platinum, each, will be handed over in exchange for you thoroughly, and fairly investigating the Beast's alleged crimes, regardless of your findings, so long as they be the truth as you know best."

She waits patiently for a response after finishing her spiel.

If anyone has Detect Alignment they can check.

"Ah, the Manual. Thank you. Once you have delivered the other nooks to Professor Crowl, I can give you your payment. There's something else I want to talk to you about as well, but I think we should table that matter until after you've wrapped up loose ends."

DC 10 Diplomacy to Gather Info on Daramid:
She is well known for being stern, but very fair, objective, and even tempered, making her an excellent Judge.

Judge Daramid opens the door when you arrive.

"Ah, you must be the ones Lorrimor sent. I've been expecting you." she invites you in.

"Have you completed teh tasks Lorrimor set for you?" she inquires.

DC 15 Sense Motive:
She appears to be all business, but Lorrimor's death is affecting her more than she lets on. It's apparent taht their relationship may have, at one point, been more than strictly professional.
