About Roland Variel

Do you remember the first time you experienced something unexplainable? You were probably a little kid, and saw something that now seems simple, but at the time it completely blew your mind. Well, I sadly was not a little kid. I was seventeen. A scout in the army. See, there's no magic in my country. The whole place is warped magically speaking. So I'd never really experienced anything like that before. So when I finally get my first assignment out of country, of course the first thing that would happen is that I'd get hit with a spell. Seriously. We were ambushed just outside the boarder. Some random bandit crew that was lucky enough to have a hedge wizard. I'm up ahead, scouting, that being both my designation and purpose, and all of a sudden a hand goes over my mouth and pain shoots through my body. Bad pain. I hit the ground, paralyzed, and can only watch as the bandits prepare to ambush my squad. Fortunately, I was grouped with some veterans, and so was not the only scout. The attempted ambush turned into a massacre. While we recoup, I'm going through the wizard's stuff, trying to find whatever it was that did that to me. I was scared. I'm sure the captain could see it, but he just left me be, and for that I'm grateful. He was a great leader.

The only thing I end up finding is a book. I'm flipping through it, and some of the stuff seems familiar. Then I recognize it from some stuff of my mom's. See, my dad's human, an army man. He was deployed out of country for a while though, and when he came back he brought a woman with him. An elf woman. I don't really remember her much, she was killed when I was still little. Turns out her family was just a little bit racist, and would rather have a dead daughter than one who would run off with a human. Dad didn't take that well, so I was mostly raised by the army, ever since I was... I dunno. Eight or nine? Can't remember.

Anyway. I kept a few things of my mothers. A necklace. A ring. A picture. And a book. Guess my mother was a mage of some sort. So I kept the new spellbook, and started practicing. I wasn't really all that great, but I was dedicated, and since practically nobody else in the whole country could do magic (what from living in the magic dead zone and all), I was eventually ordered out to go to a magic school on a military commission. I was a valuable resource! So off I went. Was there for about two years I guess when the college needed to send somebody to represent their interests in the city of Solsun. Big trouble going on there. And since I was one of the few people in the college who had both military and magical training, I was selected. Lucky me.
