Exile is a fairly common punishment for Undines who commit crimes against their community. For some, it's a disheartening loss. For Rodaya, it was just part of the plan to get out from under overprotective parents who both held positions on the community council and simply could not agree on anything--not her place in the community, not how they would deal with encroaching threats, nothing. They spent more time bickering about her than actually teaching her anything. Eventually she decided to start teaching herself things. Once she figured out how to get herself in real trouble, she found it more exciting than anything her well-behaved friends and neighbors had to offer. Rodaya doesn't talk about what she did to be exiled from her home, but it usually makes her smirk.
Troublemaker though she was, Rodaya was no one's fool; she knew she needed some sort of plan for her life after leaving home. Luckily, her tribe lived in a fairly well-traveled area; she managed to secure passage with a traveling caravan and through a combination of means earned herself some lessons. Her introspective nature lent itself well to going unnoticed; when she successfully stole a pair of strange, wide daggers from a Minkaian foreigner out of sheer curiosity, a series of coincidences thwarted the foreigner's plan to lead the caravan into an ambush. Rodaya won acclaim that day and as she continued to develop her talents, she drew the attention of a mercenary captain of the Salamander Company who decided her specific talents would be a boon. After a few tests in which she demonstrated unexpected solutions, he sought to make a full member of the mercenary company. She took to her duties well, quickly earning a tidy living and even a special reward or two.
With her talents proven and her enthusiasm obvious, the captain has brought her to Fort Inevitable to see just what she's capable of.
