YMMV, but Castlevania's songs didn't sit well with my group. Castlevania is too anime and to video game-y (with a reason) for my taste. I like a more serious feel to my campaign. Classic music for atmosphere and Apocalyptica for combats worked wonders, though.

Aside from what's already on the list, the following would make appropriate replacements for some of the Castlevania combat stuff I have on there.

Out of curiosity, how do you find these? Are you a music afficionado? Your collection must be absolutely immense.

I suppose you could call me a music aficionado. I sing (well), play drums (passably), and piano (badly). I'm fortunate enough to have several professional musicians and vocalists for friends and they've shared a great deal of their good taste in music with me over the years. Pandora and other sites like it are great tools for finding new things as well (though obviously you can't play a specific song at will). My collection has become pretty massive over time, and I'm voracious about adding new sounds to it whenever possible.

Yes, I plan on having lists for each installment. I'm a bit behind at the moment as I've been out of town, but I should have playlists for BM and WotW up within the next few weeks. I've come across a few very good pieces that I've been saving for WotW, and I'm really looking forward to putting that one together.

I'm curious what you do when (as always) the event last longer than the song. Do you put the song on repeat? Do you just have other mood music to fill out until the event is over?

In the cases of location oriented songs, I typically put one song on repeat for the duration of a scene, cycling through the various tracks as my players move to different areas (like moving between different sections of Harrowstone Prison or Schloss Caromarc) or do different things. Most of them are subtle enough that they just blend into the background after a bit, which is the intent. The effect of the area tracks is meant to be ambient and slightly subliminal.

Quite the opposite. Kavapesta is ONLY in my version of the book. One of the towns I wrote up had to die to fit within the book's 64 pages and that was the one, though sadly that mention apparently survived. Fortunately, much of the information on the city found its way into the timeline and the description of Bishop Ulametria and the Pharasmin Penitence. And before people ask to see the handful of idea drained locations I had written for this, no, I'm not sharing.

So nah. :P

So I take it there's no chance of seeing the write up on Kavapesta in any of the other installments of the AP or anything? Unfortunate. One of my PC's is playing an Inquisitor and follower of the Pharasman Penitence. When I saw the referral in the Amaans description and then realized it didn't make the cut I was heartbroken. Guess I'll just have to soldier on and come up with something myself. As you said there is still a good amount of info scattered throughout RoF. Don't suppose I could convince you to share? ;)

Off the top of my head I'd recommend Entr`acte (The Garden Awaits Us) by Black Tape for a Blue Girl or Pandora's Box by Laurel Zucker. If I think of anything more appropriate I'll post it.

The list presented here, while very verbose, is extremely overwhelming to a DM who is trying to add music to his campaign for a first time. Specific examples I've found often go over well.

I'm planning on doing exactly what you're asking about, but haven't found the time to actually arrange it yet. As to your first question, I'd say Chopin's Funeral March and Presentiment of Death should work well for the procession. Hopefully I'll have something up for HoH within the next few weeks (likely on another thread, since I don't want to hijack Wesley's) and have lists for the other adventures as they are released.

I really like a lot of the naming conventions you guys have used. Azlant/Atlantis. Most are just close enough to elicit the sort of wonder I felt as a kid and I was first reading tales of sunken empires and men surviving burning furnaces. They feel ancient, like the hulks of ships composed of memories being dredged out of a collective subconscious.

At the end of the entry for the Demiplane of Time, there's a mention of Stethelos. Just like there is at the end of Lovecraft's story fragment "The Green Meadow."

As for announcing these little easter eggs... it's my opinion that they're more fun when folks find them on their own. I'm more than willing to confirm or deny them when they're found, but most of them are going to remain subtle.

Not inspired by Donnie Darko in that particular case. It's a truly awesome movie, but I was just taking a page from the D&Dism of the silver chords that tether astral projections back to their material bodies. Same thing going on with the translucent tether between their body and either their soul or some temporal projection (different explanations having different ramifications for a campaign).

The only obvious (modern) references in TGB off the top of my head are to Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith. Probably a few more subtle ones, but its been a while since I read it all over. ;)

Yeah I wasn't talking about any of the obvious ones like Leng. I always appreciate the sidebars in many of the AP bestiaries explaining the real world myth or inspiration behind the stats, and was wondering if any of the writers felt like sharing more. Ustalav seems to take a great deal from Ravenloft (and we could spend hours discussing the various inspirations of that), Galt from the French revolution (right up to them changing the names of the months of the year :D), and Andoran from the American revolution. Cheliax at times seems take aspects of colonial Brittan, especially if we take Sargava into account.

Including a Lovecraft reference so subtle it snuck by me! Which is no mean feat. (and it's a really cool reference, too!)

Man, I'm a terrible fan. I actually forgot H.P.'s birthday this year. We usually get together and play CoC or Arkham Horror in honor.

Is it just me, or is there a Donnie Darko reference in the Guide to the Multiverse? Specifically, the translucent cords radiating from the torsos of those who enter the doorway in the Dimension of Time.

I'd be interested in other references or points of inspiration people have found in other paizo products. I've got a bunch more myself (names, national identities, character idioms) but I'd like to hear from you all too.

First, this is the gross out version of gonzo and down the line it's not difficult to imagine this designer (or others) getting into a rated R arms race with either other competitors or just himself - all of which we're not super interested in. There's a difference between mature content and just sick s!*% and this fell into the latter category for us.

Second, our lesser but still present concern is anyone who wants to make a big deal that, out of hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of submissions, we decided that one of the best was a dead baby. Is the decision defendable? Sure. But that is a problem. And we thought the author (you) put us in a tough position on this.

Those thoughts in mind, we could have just auto-rejected for inappropriateness, but we didnt do that. We went on to form this collective conclusion

Turning to the rules now, I'm not sure any of that is worth it for an item that is exactly the sum of it's prerequisite spells.

We asked ourselves this: Would we have spent this much time on this item if it was just an amulet that did all those spell effects? Nope. We would have just shot it down for being dull. In short, the discussion came from the gross out nature of the item, not the item itself.

And that means the *item* regardless of its wrappings just wasnt good enough. So that, in the end, is why we rejected it.

Stone Baby

I don't think I've heard from Clark yet, but I wanted to thank those who have commented so far. I retrospect, I did go overboard on the concept. To anyone I offended, you have my apologies. It wasn't my intention to hurt anyone.

Just so everyone knows, a lithopedia (stone baby) is an actual though rare phenomenon. Vic, a google search of the term will give you some pictures if you want to know what it looks like.

To the other points made. I probably should have just stuck with "Slot -" and left the description to define it's use instead of making up a "held" slot. Without the fluff, it is indeed just 3 spells in a rock. I'll focus on being more mechanically original next time.

Jason, I think you misunderstood. Creating this item would involve grave robbing, not a character being pregnant.

Description
A stone baby is the result of a failed pregnancy in which the fetus is not expelled after death and is too large to be absorbed by the mother’s body. The fetus then calcifies, occasionally even fusing with the mother’s own bone structure. Properly enchanted, this item can act as a useful talisman against necromantic magic and the undead, protecting it’s bearer with the life it was denied. Once per day, when the bearer of a stone baby would be the target of a death effect or energy drain, the bearer is immediately granted the protection of the spell death ward. This effect lasts for 7 minutes after it has been activated. While carrying a stone baby, the bearer is continuously under the effect of the spell hide from undead. To gain either of the benefits listed above, the bearer must cradle the stone baby in one arm as if carrying and infant. Whenever within 60 feet of an undead creature, the stone baby will moan softly like an infant stirring in its sleep. This ability functions as detect undead, save that it operates in a 60 foot radius and no additional information can be attained save that an undead is within range. This last ability is always active regardless of whether the stone baby is being carried or not.
