Regnel was born in Absalom and was raised by his father, a sage who specialized in the history of magic. Regnel never knew his mother, and his father refused to speak of her. While he excelled at school, Regnel was a bit of a disappointment to his father because he always preferred sports and athletics to studying when he was younger. He used to enjoy exploring the ruins of old battles and sieges outside of the walls of Absalom, and it was on one of these expeditions that he discovered the old sword that would unlock his latent magical abilities. As he spent more time studying the history of his new sword, he eventually communed with the spirit of the warrior that once wielded it. Combining his father's passion for learning and his own interest in adventure and exploration, Regnel eventually joined the Pathfinder Society and mixed performing missions for the Society with working in the libraries of the Dark Archives.
