Bump...

Inactive

"We must hurry, before we become trapped in our own city. Pair up and spread out. Be ready. It's likely whatever dispatched the guards is still here."

Inactive

As soon as the others were all inside, Rose followed and closed the door. With the door closed, she turned around and concentrated for a moment, activating her life sense. She spared a quick glance around the locker-filled room before she spoke "keep your eyes open."

Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28

Activating death watch spell-like ability

Inactive

Yes, several times a day from all devices.

Inactive

Kneeling down to look at the bodies of the guards, Rose grimaced. They were not killed by wyverns or fire or arrows. They were killed, up close with blades. She grabbed the nearest longsword and longbow as she stood up, slinging the bow over her shoulder. She continued to pick up the gear laying about as she spoke.

"Kiana is right. You...we, have been betrayed. We will check for Rivereye and hope we can still find his information."

Inactive

"I will not turn a blind eye towards the plight of those we encounter. If I can help, I will...but I will not delay one second longer than I must. A favor now may be returned to us when needed. We can debate it at a later time. For now, you are right. We must make haste. Let's catch up to Sobrian."

Rose's lips were a firm line of determination. She waited for the rest of them to proceed and fell in line at the rear, keeping her eyes moving. She glanced up to see if she could spot Kiana, but assumed she knew what she was doing and how to stay out of immediate danger in the skies. Again, she silently thanked her for saving the woman.

Inactive

Rose waited anxiously just outside the door of the burning house. Her glaive held in one hand, the butt resting on the street, two words echoed over and over in head. Come on...come on...

As the rescued woman touched down on the street with the cat, Rose breathed a sigh of relief. Thank the gods. She made a mental note to thank Kiana later, once they had a moment to rest. Still, if Ash didn't make it out soon she'd have to risk going in after him, and rushing into a burning building was not her idea of a wise move. Brave though, but probably not wise.

She startled as the dresser smashed into the street and turned quickly raising her glaive with both hands in the process. She visibly relaxed when she saw that it wasn't on fire and they were not being attacked and turned her attention back to the door way, trying to see if she could spot Ash coming.

Inactive

"KIANA! GET THE GIRL! PLEASE!" Rose shouted as she alternated waving her arms and pointing at the woman in the window.

Inactive

As she talks, Rose takes a moment to slip the small medallion into a belt pouch.

"Nothing changes. We make for the depository. The Ragesian army is still marching towards us, and it would seem their aerial scouts are here now. We still have to meet this gnome and then get out of the city. Might even be a little easier in this chaos."

"Sobrian, Barrack, Beauregarde, why don't you three take point. I'll bring up the rear. Ash, stay in between us, next to Torrent. I'm sure Kiana will help keep us covered, as long as she doesn't run out of arrows."

Inactive

Blanching at being spotted and recognized, Sarrissa couldn't help but nodding before she grasped her holy symbol. With the little girl present, she decided against using her sight of life to determine the unconscious woman's status. Doing so might remove what hope she had left in her own heart for the woman, and she hadn't yet had the training that she needed, that which would allow her to recognize and know how to treat injuries. So she resorted to what she did know.

Holding the holy symbol aloft, she closed her eyes and whispered a quick prayer. The positive energy flowed into her and filled her with indescribable joy. With the sounds of battle and misery all around her, it was hard not to smile. She gritted her teeth and with a deep breath, released the pent up energy building up inside her. It flooded the streets around her, closing minor scraps and bruises of everyone around her. She hesitated a look at the unconscious mother to see if had had any effect and silently prayed that it had.

My condolences on your loss. Sometimes pets can be harder than people.

Have we lost our GM already?

Inactive

I am here.

"WE SHOULD BE GOING PEOPLE. THIS PLACE ISN'T SAFE" she shouted!

She contemplated saying more, about how they should leave the city, but with so many others running around she didn't want to tip their hand. Who knows what they had already overheard. Besides, she didn't really know many of these others and while she trusted those that sent her here, she still didn't know these people. The fact that they were willing to save those that had attacked them spoke volumes, and she trusted her gut, but it was still too soon to make judgments about them. That would come with time.

She continued to guard what was left of the front door, ensuring that no new threats encroached on their temporary shelter.

Inactive

Stepping back inside, Rose called out "we're gonna need buckets. Bowls! Anything that can hold water. Hurry!" She stood just inside the doorway, eyes watching the street and trying to keep an eye on Kiana.

Rose will start casting create water on anything she can.

Inactive

"Lay down your arms and gather your wounded."

Rose looked at Ash. "Well done."

Turning her attention to Torrent, Rose continued "let us be away from this place. There is no time to waste." With that, she began to move forward out the broken down front door. She stepped outside and immediately moved to the side to clear the entry way. She looked around and up, hoping to catch a glimpse of whatever was passing overhead.

Inactive

Beneath her gauntlets, Rose's knuckles whitened as her hands squeezed the glaive. Like a set bear trap, she was ready to spring. Time seemed to slow down and the seconds inched by. Sweat started beading on her brow beneath her bangs. She hoped it would begin soon. She dare not take the time to wipe the sweat away.

Ready Action to impale whoever enters through the door.

Readied attack:

Glaive, bless: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 3 + 1 = 24
Slashing damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Glaive, bless, confirm: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 3 + 1 = 14
Critical damage: 2d10 + 8 ⇒ (8, 6) + 8 = 22

Inactive

"We should leave, now, while we still can" Rose said as she moved towards the front door. With her glaive in hand, she took up position and set her pole arm aimed at the door, nodding at Sobrian as she did so. She gritted her teeth for what would come next, ready to skewer who ever dared to enter uninvited.

Rose will move to a position near the front door in which she can threaten any opposition coming through.

Inactive

As the others took up advantageous spots around the room, Rose found herself remaining in almost the same spot. She glanced around the room and briefly measured everyone in the room. She was the heaviest armored. In fact, two of them had no armor at all and only one other one wore metal armor of any sort. Most of them appeared to be spell casters or mobile fighters. Despite her armor though, she was deceptively mobile. Still, instincts told her she would likely have to hold the line to buy the others time to do what they needed to do. She briefly considered shouting out orders but decided against it. She had no idea if they would listen and if shouting out would betray their awareness or positioning. So instead, she waited for something to happen.

Inactive

Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26

Rose moved closer to Torrent and whispered "is there anyone else in the building that you are aware of? We seen to have company above us."

For GM sanity and ease, I use a Block Initiative system.

Enemies get one roll (or average their rolls to one initiative).

Players get split into blocks of "before the bad guys" and "after the bad guys."

Generally, who goes before the bad guys only matters in round 1. After that both sides just take turns.

I allow PCs to post in whatever order they can/want to within their "block".

That's just me though. YMMV.

This seems to be the best choice in PbP. I use it the games I run as well.

"It is good to know we are not fools then. Flying over the wall would seem to have the greatest chance of success. If we had more time, the gods might grant me spells to assist, but if we leave tonight, there is little I can offer."

"The thieves guild may very well have secret tunnels into or out of the city, but again, that would take time to explore. Kiana's plan is our best option."

"Oh, and I am Rose.

Rose appears fully human and does not know she is anything else. She has no distinguishing physical characteristics marking her otherwise.

Inactive

"So it is settled then? We are pledging our services to this mission? I am at your disposal friend" Rose said to Torrent.

Turning to look at Kiana, Rose continued "are you without fear in this as you are with flying? Without fear, there can be no courage."

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17

Knowledge (arcana) {untrained}: 1d20 ⇒ 15
Knowledge (history) {untrained}: 1d20 ⇒ 17

Looking at Sobrian as she speaks, Rose began "the inquisitors will do anything to find what they are looking for. If your family does not practice magic, they should be safe from the inquisitors. They won't waste time on non-magic users...unless they can point to magic users. Still, odds are in your family's favor that they won't be harmed. Without knowing fully what we are getting into, they may be in more danger coming with us. I can arrange for them to be hidden if that would help you. I have friends in...less honorable positions, that can help hide people within the city."

GM:

Yes

Shortly before midnight, Rose found herself sweating beneath her armor despite the chill in the night air. Why was she so nervous? She had been in more desperate situations, been worse off than walking up to an empty building. Still, there was something about walking into the unknown. With a gauntlet-cover hand, she knocked on the door of the Poison Apple.

GM:

Walking the streets in the public, addressed in metal armor, was still unusual for Rose. She had walked the streets for years before, always in the shadows and never with anything of value on before. In all those years, she never carried a real weapon before. She had always carried a small blade or a hidden shank, but never a pole arm like this. Is was still somewhat awkward in her hands.

Her concentration was broken at hearing her name called out in the streets. Turning to see Shami approaching, she relaxed a bit. Usually when her name was shouted in the streets, she was running with the other kids from the local authorities. This time however, she stood in the light, dressed in chainmail, glaive in her hand.

"Hey Shami, good to see you." She listened to the woman as she talked about the pub and nodded. "Okay Shami. I'll be there."

Greetings all. Checking in.

Thanks for being a GM. Happy gaming everyone!

Ember is a Peri-blooded Occult Arcanist hiding out in Sandpoint. Alias is mostly finished.

Writing Sample:

Ember backed up against the wall. In the shadows, few would even know she was there. She quickly turned her head and looked down the hall. Seeing no one, she turned and walked down the hallway. About halfway down the hall, the floor began to bubble.

A small portal opened and a bloated frame creature climbed through. It gurgled and held up a clawed appendage and pointed at Ember. She froze in her tracks. It reached into her mind "Dominearix wants you back." The sickening thought echoed through her mind. It almost made her vomit. Her hands went to her temples as she tried to hold her head together. The creature lumbered forward, it's heaving steps sending small tremors through the floor. The closer it got to her, the more the pain increased.

She gritted her teeth and called out to the realms. Her cries echoed across worlds, across dimensions, even across time. When she heard the shriek, she knew her call had been answered. She dropped to her knees in agony. From behind her, a brief golden light erupted into the hallway and a golden eagle streaked over her head. It slammed into the demon slashing and snapping in a flurry of feathers.

Ember took advantage of the eagle's interception and climbed onto her feet. With eyes barely open, she turned and ran back the way she came. She would have to find another place to hide.

I've been accepted into some other games so I'm going to officially withdraw my submission. Good luck to all and I look forward to reading your adventures.

As requested:

Physical Description:

Arasmis stands 6 ft. even and weighs about 200 lbs. With thick arms and legs and a bit of a belly, his skin is a light grey color, similar to ash. His dark hair is closer to soot and he has a large tattoo on his back of a flame. The tattoo, originally of a great axe surrounded by a flame has been modified to cover up the weapon with more flame and a scimitar. He is clean shaven, wears his hair short, and dresses in tan leathers. His armor has seen a few battles in his short time, mostly from training.

Fluff:

”I don’t remember my parents. My earliest memory is the Arcane Tower. I could see it from miles away. I knew I had to get there. So I ran. I could hear the orcs pursuing me, cursing me, screaming what they would do if I didn’t stop. So I kept running. I was maybe 7 or 8 years old. Thinking back, that’s probably why the guards didn’t shoot me down. I passed out a few yards from the northern gate. When I woke, I was in a bed in a room somewhere in the city.

I remember a little bit of being inside the Arcane Tower. Learning for a little bit about arcane magic, I think. I wasn’t there long, too many fights. See, I had grown up in the alleys in New Allence. I was a street kid, surviving on whatever I could scrounge. I got lucky though. I could make others laugh, so some of the older kids took care of me a bit, taught me how to survive. My joking was not well received at the Arcane Tower however.

A few years later I found the church, and religion. Or maybe religion found me…who knows. The church tolerated my antics a bit longer than anyone else had. I learned a little bit about the gods, but mostly I learned to pray. To pray for help, for guidance, and for the first time I could remember, someone listened, and responded. I became a conduit, if you will, for the light, for Sarenrae’s fire, for positive energy...

After that I found a teacher outside of the Arcane Tower to help me learn to control my arcane talents. Master Jacob taught me so many things, not just about magic, but about life, about living. He taught me there was more than just survival. And I was pretty appy at this point. Sarenrae’s blessings and the knowledge that I was able to sustain myself, provide for myself, I was a man now.

Jacob said he had to travel north to Fort Nunshal. He didn’t say why or where exactly he was going, but he did leave in a hurry. When he didn’t come back for months, I knew something was wrong. So I went looking for him. All that I could gather was that he went farther north, into orc territory. I have no idea why he would have done that, or what he was seeking. I only know that I will volunteer to be a part of any expedition that heads north of the pass. I will not endanger any one’s mission, and I will not stop trying to look for him. I’m not a fool, I know I won‘t last long on my own without someone to watch my back. ”

Advancement:

To be honest, I hadn't considered where this character would go. After looking through prestige classes, there isn't much that really fits the character. I would continue to focus on cleric levels mostly, and may take a bard level occasionally. Bard gives me skills, some alternative support tools, and a few tricks up my sleeve.

Comments:

I'm current on your story and I have to say well done. It's refreshing to see a basic view of many facets that typically are over-looked in gaming these days. Encumberance, food, overland travel, you all have role played it wonderfully. Selected or not, I will continue to follow your campaign because I have become a fan.
