Thoughts
- grew up on the wasteland of Drinax
- generations ago it was nice, but they were destroyed b/c of the King's hubris
- While the royals were spared, her ancestors and neighbours died
- few who survived scraped by on a toxic planet
- hard life, agrarian, loss of technology, hunting, etc.
- illness, sickness - seen friends and family lost to poisons, short lifespans, hazards
- knows royals can be dangerous - blames them, but scared of their decrees
- wants to get away from here, but no skills or education
- tried to run off with shuttlecraft/pirates/etc. but turned down: no useful skills
- tries to salvage scrap and figure out how it works - get her off world
"I'm going to be playing a human Vespexer named Aubray Vogel, who goes by the name Ray. Life on the Wasteland of Drinax is hard, so she's desperate to get off of it -- as long as she doesn't have to stay on the Floating Palace! It's their fault Drinax turned all toxic anyway. Her Grandma said it was something about hubris? Meh! She wasn't really listening. Well, them and those Aslan jerks. (The moral of the story is: Those nobles are nothing but trouble! and Old people are boring!). Ray wants to get herself a new life, but no one will let her leave with them! Life on Drinax hasn't exactly prepared her for a successful life in space. She's intent on making something of herself so she can get the heck out of here!"
Term 1
- Drifter, barbarian. Life as a Vespexer. Trying to make something of herself.
- Found a Patron - hired her for a job (going into scout next). They spoke fancy words and Ray picked up a few sayings in a smattering of languages. - Kasiyl (see below)
- Moving on to other work on Drinax.
- Made a contact! Kasiyl of the Ahroay’if
Information on Kasiyl of the Ahroay’if: is an exiled Aslan from the Hierate. The Ahroay’if clan are the dominant power in Tlaiowaha Subsector. Why a prince of that family fled the Hierate is a mystery, and he refuses to speak of his past. He ended up on Drinax several years ago. The Aslan noble is a mighty warrior and a superlative pilot, but as a male he has no idea how to use technology or handle money, so he was little more than a beggar when he arrived. He sought a place on the Star Guard, but Lord Wrax refused him. Since then, Kasiyl has found work as a bodyguard and interpreter.
Ray started as a bit of a bigot who doesn't like nobles or Aslan and he's both. Haha. Being offered work and guidance from someone else who started from nothing, is good at some things Vespexer's value, but is capable of teaching her other valuable skills to get her out into the wider world would have been a dream come true, but to find that he's those things she hates would have been troubling to her. The experience would have helped shake her of her prejudices. (These guys aren't so bad after all...).
Second Term
- Kasiyl helps Ray get work as a Scout (explorer). Early in her career she met Steph who was also a courier.
- She excels.
- She serves as the courier for an important message from the Imperium's Emperor Strephon to Imperial Consul Thao Poloc in the Floating Palace. Ray's not privy to the information contained therein. He's a bit of a spymaster. At the same time Steph was picking up a message from the same place. Asim Rebels tried to intercept the information and blasted down Steph's ship to get it. But they had the wrong courier. Ray delivered the message and Steph was scuttled. They though they were getting an important message between two leaders, and all they got was a letter from a couple of nobles having an affair.
Third Term
- Became a Surveyor
- After being slightly famous for successfully delivering an important missive a few years ago from the imperium's Emperor to the Imperium's consul, Ray used her fame to launch her career as a surveyor. Over the next few years she met with success, and her names become relatively well-known -- for a Vespexer. On a recent stop back in the Floating Palace she ran into Chieftain Galx, who wanted to take the opportunity to meet the Vespexer who had made something of herself (and to hear about these other worlds that Ray has explored and surveyed). Ray wonders if the Chieftain is interested in finding a new homeland for the Vespexers, or is just interested in the resources that could be obtained from such places.... Either way, as much as Ray wants to help her people, she still wants to get away more than anything. Chieftain Galx's presence always serves to drag her back to her past. A feeling that has Ray more than a little torn. (I imagine she's both proud to know Chieftain Galx, and reminded of how much her people suffer by her presence. As much as Ray wants to run off and forget about them, befriending the Chieftain has caused her to start thinking about improving the lives of her people. She sort of feels guilty about it for now, but maybe next term that will change. )
- Still delivers messages for Thao Poloc on and off, and met Daneel in the offices of the ambassador.
- Jerry was the sole survivor, stranded on a distant planet, and more than a little traumatized. Ray works on a ship that surveys and explores distant, lesser known planets. Ray's ship could have spotted Jerry and picked him up, giving him a ride back to Drinax. Ray would have had a whole journey to interact with the jittery, traumatized Jerry. She would have know him at his 'worst' but also would understand why he's so paranoid and worried about dangers all the time.
Fourth Term
- Continued as a surveyor, doing great
- On her last surveying mission Ray discovered the secret base of a group of space pirates. They finished their surveying mission on the planet and left, but the pirates shot them down before they could escape the planet's gravity. Ray's ship crash landed and she was the only survivor. Which is when Ray learned a valuable lesson. What good was respect, and a good job, if she couldn't protect it? Useless! Alone and with nothing in the wreckage of her ship, Ray decided to join the 'enemy.' She surrendered to the space pirates, joined them, and helped them get what remained on the ship that was valuable off before it was wrecked (valuable mineral samples mostly). She also gave them information on the locations of valuable resources that her crew discovered (and could be sold for a decent amount of credits). For her next term Ray will become a Rogue (pirate) and try to live amongst the very people who shot her from the sky and ruined her life.
- I decided the group that attacked her ship was a coalition of five smaller pirate ships run by Captain 'Cutlass' Kate. The ship Ray worked on was called the 'Rakish Heir' and its lead by Captain Decklan Darkbones (son of the infamous space pirate Drisella Darkbones). He's a pompous fellow who acts like a nobleman among pirates. When she eventually deserted the gang Captain 'Cutlass' ordered Darkbones to hunt her down and drag her back alive (but not necessarily whole...).
- TL 10 Advanced Combat Rifle (ACR), used by many military forces around the Trojan Reach. Very long range, a huge magazine, low-cost ammunition and it comes with the traits "Auto 3" and "Scope". (See page 75 of the Core Rulebook for an explanation of why that's good.)
Fifth Term
- going into Rogue (pirate) -- miraculously accepted
- But Ray can't stand the people she's with and after suffering years of hazing she makes her escape back towards Drinax. Maybe Chieftain Galx will have some work for her back home...
- I like that the only thing Ray learned as a pirate was how to lie. It's from hiding her disdain all those years. Haha.
- She suffered an injury in her escape. (What?)
- Paid for medical care when back at the Floating Palace
