About Rath "The Ashbringer"
Ethan Garrett was an aspiring cleric of Sarenrae. He left a troubled childhood in Cheliax behind and never looked back. But years later when his mother came calling for him to aid his doomed father the bonds of family pulled taught and he forsook his oaths and reluctantly returned home.
His father had broken contract with Asmodeous and the price was simple. Ethan must take his father's place in a Chilaxian prison or his mother and sisters would join in his father's fate. He cursed his father's name as the shackles were placed on his wrists and ankles and the cell door was closed behind him. Entering into darkness he set aside all other emotions except perseverance and hate.
After two years in a lightless hole Ethan had learned why he had been chosen to take his father's place. Ethan was incredibly strong willed where his father was weak. The company he kept in that pit set themselves to breaking him, to learn what secrets he had of Asmodeous's dealings in the city. Though he knew nothing that his father knew he never broke or let on that he had nothing to tell.
When finally light shone on his face again as he was released he was approached by a devil in human clothing. In the literal sense, as the creature had red skin and horns yet wore the attire of a nobleman. This creature never gave Ethan his name but took him to an inn for a hot meal and stiff drink. While sitting and eating Ethan seethed with hatred as he looked at the wretched thing, but he listened nonetheless. The creature showed Ethan the rest of his father's broken contract and there was a clause that he was sure his father never read. A clause that bound Ethan to Asmodeous's servitude for an undetermined amount of time. It stated that Ethan was to take up the holy symbol of Asmodeous and track down all those in violation of contract with Asmodeous. He was to be the adjudicator of Asmodean justice as it were.
Ethan sat back in his seat and lit a cigar. His beard had grown long in that cell but he did not mind. He looked at this contract that he would have to sign his name too. For if he did not he knew all to well the horror's his mother and sisters would face. Taking the quill and slicing his own palm he signed the name Rath in his own blood. He would do this thing for his family but that would be the last anyone knew of Ethan Garrett.
One year and many slain violators of contracts with Asmodeous later, Rath was known as the Ashbringer. Some thought this was because of the ever present cigar he smoked. But those who had been on the receiving end of his wrath knew the truth. When Rath exacted his judgment on those he was called to punish he would wipe their blood from his blade on the contract they violated. Then, his hand would ignite in flame, the crumpled contract in his grasp. He kept the ash in a pouch on his hip which he later used to craft items that further his goals.
It was after one such event that Rath was approached by the red skinned devil noble. He was being given a new debt to collect on. It seems some winter witch had broken contract with Asmodeous in Taldor.
