BACKGROUND:

"I am Rafyyk, called the Halfmoon by some. Desna watches over me, and the thread of my fate is strong and carefully watched. My life has taken many twists and turns, and I shall tell you a little of it so you may understand. I was raised by my mother, Kyra, in Qadira. She kept me away from the rest of the family back in Casmaron - though she sent word of her son, just not that I was a half-orc. I found out when I was older that my mother was a Princess, and by that I do not mean that she was treated as one. I mean she was really a princess, a distant relation to the emperor. She never would answer questions about my father."

"I was tutored in many things, though I am ashamed to say that not only was I often a poor student, but I was actively rebellious and sometimes mean to my teachers. My poor mother had quite a trying time of raising me, I fear. It is only now when I look back that I can see how difficult I made things for her and the others in my life. I can only do what I can moving forward to try and make up for it.

"Regardless, my mother wasn't burdened with me for that many years. When I was barely a teenager, I had left the safety of the city in a fit of rebellious action when orc raiders attacked. They beat me savagely and knocked me out. When I awoke I was inside a dark cave somewhere. An old but muscled orc with many fetishes and trophies was with me and glared at me when I started to move around. He told me he was called Angry Spirit, which I found later to be not only because he was a shaman that could talk to spirits, but that he had a massive temper as well. He told me that I was now among the Bloodied Tusk Tribe, where my father had come from."

"I spent several long years among the orcs, and most of the time I was chained, often beaten, forced to do hard labor and listen to Angry Spirit's lectures, rantings and lessons. Only two things got me through the very hard times: thoughts of my mother and the strange dreams I had. I dreamt of beautiful places, as if I was visiting meadows and woods and other places but always with butterflies present and often leading me. As the dreams grew stronger I heard a woman's voice unlike any I had ever heard, so wonderful it almost was painful. She said soothing things to me, told me that this wasn't forever and one day I would be free. She even warned me the day before I was to get tattooed that I musn't resist, that I must let them tattoo me as it would be her work through them and not the owner markings that they were intended. True to her word, the ink markings when they were done were tribal-looking but if one could take it all in with an open mind, there was a butterfly shape hidden among them."

"I finally escaped when I was just shy of my eighteenth summer. The orcs had begun to get lazy around me, comfortable. I hadn't tried anything in months. I had bided my time as the voice in my dreams had told me to. Then I escaped during the day when the orcs were sleeping. I do not know how long I ran for, or how many days I traveled before I collapsed and was found by a caravan. The leader of the train was a human man named Jeraq, and he was a follower of Desna who said he had been led there to 'find the halfmoon'. They nursed me back to health as we traveled to the nearest city. I was able to get back to my mother and let her know I was alright, though much different than she'd last seen me."

"Since then I have spent much time in Katapesh and Absalom, two of my favorite places. Katapesh is a wondrous place, similar and yet much different to Qadira. But in Absalom I found the Pathfinder Society. I had heard of them before, even met some that passed through when I was very young. Heroes and adventurers, discoverers and protectors. I wanted to be all those things and more. I have not been a member long, and though I carry a wayfinder it is not mine yet. One day I will pay for it and this mission I have been tasked with is of great import. I hope it will cement my membership in the eyes of all."
