Rafiel grew up in the same caravan with Sandru and the two became fast friends. Also an orphan of sorts, Rafiel's parents barely paid attention to him even when they were alive. His father was an alcoholic gambler that fell ill and died in his own sick, and his mother wandered off into the night, supposedly mad.

If it hadn't been for Sandru's friendship and Mother Mvashti's guidance, Rafiel would never have lived to see adulthood, let alone find his place in the world.

Even as a child, Rafiel had always loved playing in the storms of the Varisian plains. The power and majesty of the wind and rain called to him. The freedom represented by the storms did not escape the young Varisian.

One night, by the fire, a druid came into the caravan circle to share the warmth and light. Before the night was over, Rafiel had made the woman promise to be his teacher in the way of druidcraft. She saw the promise within him, even if it was a different promise than her own.

Now, an adult, Rafiel uses his gift with storms to help prepare local farmers from inclement weather. He still stops by Sandpoint every now and then to check on Sandru and make sure his old friend is well.

Rafiel is just as tempestuous as the storms he loves so much. While he claims that his druidic lore has made him this way, the truth is that the apple didn't fall that far from the tree. He still can't, to this day, drink alcohol for fear that he'll turn into his father.

Still, no one can hang around Sandru Vhiski for too long without being at least a little bit charming and Rafiel is no exception.
