Backstory:
Lyndis grew up in the small library-tower of arcanist Llewel in Korvosa, as her parents, two adventurers, wandered the land risking their long elven lives to help those in need. Llewel himself a retired adventurer who used to campaign with her parents, now focused on the studies of the arcane as his shorter half-elf lifespan caught up to him. Every dozen years or so, Lyndis' parents would come to Korvosa, bringing her and Llewel treasure and curious trinkets from their adventures. And while Llewel scorned her parents for being irresponsible with their daughter and their own lives, Lyndis was prideful of her parents' adventures and eager to grow up and become just like them.
Llewel kept Lyndis busy as much as he could, having her help at the library from a young age, and so Lyndis would help with research, clean the tower, catalog books and perform many other menial tasks every day for long hours. If you can't even do this, he would say, you'll never have any hope of becoming an adventurer like your mother; but if this was meant to discourage Lyndis and break her spirit, it would often have the opposite effect, as she would search the library for ways to help hear clean or move things and be soon dabbling in arcane magic.
4648 was the year the Freedom Wars began in what was then northern Molthune, and also the last time Lyndis would see her parents, as they prepared to help the oppressed nation gain its independence. Seven years later Nirmathi was founded, and a man who called himself captain Salvaro Rufus came to Korvosa, telling Lyndis and Llewel about how her parents' sacrifice was instrumental for their victory and independence. He also gave Lyndis her mother's spellbook, the only thing left from their bodies after retreating Molthune soldiers looted their corpses for all other possessions.
After weeks of mourning, Lyndis became obsessed with her mother's spellbook, spending every second of free time and sacrificing sleep on learning everything she could. A few years later, with some spells under her belt, Lyndis finally felt ready. Though she was still less than 50 years of age, just a young children by elven standards, she strongly felt that she wanted to go to Nirmathas, live on the land her parents died to create, help people settle. Llewel objected, forbade her and they fought for days, but when became clear to the old man that she would simply run away, he decided to go with her, to at least help her settle in this new land and get her bearings.
They both moved to Skelt despite Lyndis' protests, as she wanted to live in Tamran, and the years that followed were more peaceful than expected, occasionally news of trouble would come and Lyndis would go out to help units in small skirmishes or fend off beasts from Fangwood, but Llewel was always there to help Lyndis, often in secret, and she was never in any real danger. As the years went by, however, Lyndis grew in age, arcane power and confidence, going further south with each of her missions.
It all fell apart in 4715 AR.
Already in his last years, Llewel couldn't convince the now-adult Lyndis to not join a Nirmathi force assault on Fort Ramgate, and as the Fortune's Blood hobgoblins slaughtered every Nirmathi around Lyndis and it seemed like she would be next, her old mentor joined the battle, casting a spell to turn her invisible so she could escape. As he was about to do the same himself, hobgoblin arrows pierced his chest, leaving Lyndis alone, an invisible spectator to the atrocities committed around her.
Lyndis fled back to their house Skelt, consumed by grief and guilt as she felt responsible for the death of Llewel. And as two years went by, her guilt slowly shaped itself into rage.
Those hobgoblins would pay for what they did, she would find a way.
As Lyndis once again made her way south, she found signs of war, towns were taken by a hobgoblin army, and a small group of survivors was trying to fight back.
