On the topic of the mite's equipment, Pork explains that apart from the flail and perhaps the extra bow he would have no use for the items. He suggests that they sell them back in town once the rescue mission is over. As the party enters the room he keeps his distance from Kynrael, not wanting to get trampled. At the sight of the mites Porks springs to action, but when the rest of the group hesitates Pork pauses and listens to them. After they finish, he says "These creatures will sneak up on us and slit our throats the first chance they get, and mine will be the first since it's the easiest to reach. I say we take no chances." He then approaches the pit and looks into it, seeing if we can spot anything interesting or of value in the refuse. Perception check: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5

Pork tried his hardest to ignore the battle and keep watch on the rear. He stared what seemed like centuries down the empty hallway, but finally couldn't resist the urge any longer and swivelled his head. The sight of the enlarged Rois towering over increasingly diminutive mite filled Pork with both horror and mirth, causing him to blurt out a sound that was a combination of the emotions "Baaaarh!" before firing another arrow. Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
If we are retcon that Rois gets the Enlarge Person spell, then his attack gets an additional +1 from the extra strength, I believe.

Hearing the wizard's commands, Pork obeys. If the wizard wishes to be closer to a creature who can shrug off their swords, hammers, spells and arrows, Pork would be happy to oblige. Pork fires one last arrow at the mite then moves to F14 and keeps both eyes on the other hallway. Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28

As the scorpion and its rider appear into view, Pork immediately tries to fire his bow only to find he forgot to notch an arrow. Fumbling, he finally wrests a arrow from his quiver but by that time his compatriots had already advanced onto the enemy. He squints and aims carefully, finally taking a shot. Pork moves to J14
He is attacking the scorpion if it is still alive, otherwise, he shoots the mite.

Dissapointed that he couldn't find anything interesting, Pork leaves the repulsive room. Knodding vigorously, he agrees with Argor that they should proceed cautiously. He then tries to see if there are any differences between the two closed doors, either in age, type of wood, etc, passing on any observations, as the rest of the party decides where they should go next. Perception check: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 6

Pork's mood immediately improves at the sight of the silver coins and he quickly pockets his share. Afterwards he tries to salvage his spent arrows then looks to the open doorway and says "Come on, these things may be ugly but they have lots of coins, maybe we'll find more in there." Pork will take up the rear of the formation. Also, based on past experiences, I'm pretty sure Kynrael will take lead, followed by Rois and then Argor. Can we all agree on this default formation when we aren't scouting or checking for traps? Recovering missed ammunition: 1d100 ⇒ 24

Seeing his allies rush into battle emboldens Pork with courage and he carefully shoots an arrow at the creatures on the right side of the room. Pork will shoot an arrow at M4 if it is not dead. If M4 is dead then he will shoot at M3 instead. I believe both M4 and M3 have partial cover against Pork's attacks. Attack vs AC: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11

"By the nine hells even the vile pits of Lamashtu haven't bore witness to such abominations!" Pork thought as his eyes widened in horror. To calm himself he thought of the gold promised by the marshal as well as the glory of victory in their last battle. He gulped and widened his stance, preparing for the fight.

With the fight over, Pork triumphantly drives his heel into the head of one the beetles. However, the carapace is too thick for him to crush and after a brief struggle resigns to simply denting it. Hearing Kynrael's praise, Pork folds his arms and says "Yes well, goblin bow shooters are unrivalled and I am certainly the greatest one in these parts." Something on the ground catches his eye and he notices that he is standing over the arrow that failed to hit its mark. With sidelong glances at his companions, Pork tries to pick up the arrow with no one noticing and inspects it for damage. Rolling to recover missed ammunition (>50 is a success): 1d100 ⇒ 6

I think I can move to I1 and shoot the beetle without provoking AoO, I am doing this now just to speed things up for when the DM gets back. With only one monster remaining, Pork passes by Kynrael and tries to conclude the battle with a final arrow. Move to I1

After hearing that the voices weren't human, Pork believes the situation is much more serious than they had hoped. He whispers, "I can take a look inside, I know you humans don't see well in the dark... not sure about you," pointing at Kynrael. "Or maybe we can lure whatever is in there out in the open."

You mentioned that we are in a canyon-like area, is the path we are following going up one of the sides of the canyon or is it going down the middle (or somewhere in between) Goblins are known to enter dangerous locations more through foolishness than curiosity, and even Pork was feeling a little foolish. These signs of old almost never harbor anything good according to the old goblin stories. Tightening the grip on his bow, he frequently checked behind himself to see if anything was following them.

The cart suddenly stopped, and Pork braced against the floor, ready to jump out at the first sound of alarm. But none came, only some muffled talking. Popping his head out from underneath the pile of rags he sees the rest of the party looking at tracks leading away from the road. Pork jumps off the cart catches up to them. "Right." he says while adjusting his helmet, "we should walk in formation, I can cover the rear."

Pork enters the building and and begins loading a paltry collection of tools into the cart, making sure they stick up high out of the cart. He tosses any old linens or rags he can find into the cart as well. After some difficulty he hitches a horse to the cart and steers it to the road leading out of town. He then buries himself underneath the linen with longbow in hand. In moments of complete silence, a barely audible giggling can be heard coming from the pile of rags.

"Yes, let's drink to victory!" Pork yelled, raising his flagon high before gulping down his drink. He continued eating until he was full and then leaned back into his chair, his flagon resting on his belly. A loud burp led into another song, but this one noticeably quieter as he was tired from the journey: "Gather around the fire
May your dreams be full treasures
So let your sword arm retire
He repeated the song over and over, quieter and slower every time until his head flopped onto his shoulder and the singing stopped.

All this talk of battle plans gets Pork so he excited he forgets to chew his food and nearly chokes on a slice of pecan pie, Kynrael's joke didn't help either. After clearing his throat he agrees with the group's assessment of the situation. "We don't know anything about these disappearances so we should be cautious and ready for anything. Kynrael and somebody else can pose as guards while the rest of you pretend to be miners, be warned though that those posing as miners will not have their weapons in hand if there's a conflict. I'll hide in the cart and stand up at the first sign of trouble, and to further avoid suspicion we can leave early to avoid the locals." Pork pauses for a moment in thought then says "In fact, if we leave early enough we may not even need disguises, except perhaps me. If we are facing simple hooligans we can catch them while they sleep, but if it's something more serious then all of us will be ready and armed."

With a name like The Jumping Gnome Inn Pork was sure that the owner knew how to cook a good meal. Although the food looked delicious there was a distinct lack of gnome, a sign of hard times, Pork thought. Still, he was first to sit himself at the table and begin eating. As dusk set in and Pork grew full he asked their host a few questions "So what are you mining down there, and how deep does it go?"

As the company marches Pork begins singing an old traveller's song, which also doubles as a raiding chant. This isn't unusual as most goblins only travel for the purpose of looting and fighting. Pork invites anyone able to speak his native tongue to join him: Travellers from every vein
But goblins, we are hardy folk,
But on journey’s end
When they stop for lunch Pork had already grown hungry and finished half of his meal, eating comfortably on horseback. As everyone settles in he asks, "These people we pass by are so sad, do all large-folk travel that way or do you think it has something to do with our assignment?"

"I led the fiercest bunch of bow shooters in all the lands. I've lived through many bloody battles, so when we get into a fight stay close to me." Pork said, pressing a thumb against his chest. He noted Argor's trouble with his horse, hoping that a "former apprentice to Master Candle", whatever that is, could fight better than he could ride.

Pork was worried that his companions would strongly resent his presence, but even Kynrael seemed willing to give him a chance, which was more than could be said for most goblins. The Marshall’s words sounded urgent, or annoyed, Pork had trouble telling. At mention of the reward Pork’s mouth began salivating. Even with the minimum payment Pork would be among the richest goblins he ever knew. Any doubts he had about joining the Militia vanished, as he was already imagining what feast he could have. After firmly patting the emblem on his sleeve he rushed outside and headed for the stables, barely able to exclaim "don’t worry we’ll find all those missing people!" |
