Appearance & Personality:

Though a Varisian with generally traditional features, Pirileah (pi-ruh-LEE-uh, often simply called "Leah") sports a head of straight black hair very unlike the curly locks of her parents. She shares little of the rugged, wiry features of her family, but is otherwise a healthy, attractive, if a bit skinny, young woman. She bears several minor scars from her childhood encounters and makes no special effort to hide them.

Leah is fastidious about her appearance and is loathe to leave behind her personal effects. Despite being on the road often and accustomed to diverse terrain, she has a habit of busying herself with grooming in order to start social meetings off on the right foot.

Background:

Leah has been in search of an escape from her sheltered life ever since she met the butcher's son. He was a bully, through and through; he got away with tormenting and manipulating Leah in creative ways because his father always turned a blind eye. More than once her travels took her through that same area; each time she dreaded meeting him...until one day she charmed him into thrashing his own lackeys. The storm of accusations and drama between the boys' families was enough to have her laughing at them all for days.

Leah has lived a nomadic lifestyle with her Varisian parents; they've been entertainers, merchants, swindlers and everything in between. She's been exposed to a lot of different cultures without truly knowing her own was not what she was taught. She's been bullied, coddled, and hidden away...and she's had enough. With her magical powers swelling, her curiosity tugging at her and her patience running thin, she's decided it's time to leave the caravan and find her own way.

Motivations & Fears:

There are several things Leah distinctly wants:
To figure out why she stands out so much among other Varisians
To obtain enough power to never be bullied again
To collect distinctive works of art
To master her craft of tattooing
To prove to everyone that she is more than just a scrawny urchin to be coddled and shielded
To humble, belittle and use those who oppress her, her family and anyone she might care about.
To find someone BESIDES her mother skilled enough to add some elaboration and beauty to her tattoo
To find out where her father got the strange blade he kept hidden...the one she took when she left.

There are a few things Leah fears:
Running into trouble from which her magic can't save her
An old woman who seems to appear often in her family's travels since her "awakening" and always seems to be asking questions about her with a piercing, unnerving gaze
getting carted off to some wizard's tower to be an experiment...or worse
Dogs
Drowning

A Little Encounter:
"Well, look who it is, boys! It's the little sand bunny, come to play!" Normally, the sound of that sarcastic, venomous voice would have made her cringe; this time, Pirileah forced herself to keep from smiling. As she mumbled the little chant and weaved a few hands signs she'd taught herself, she carefully tracked the sound of footsteps approaching. All three were there. The farmhand, the street rat...and the butcher's boy. She forced herself to relax as the heavy hand on her shoulder turned her round.

They got taller... A quick scan of the three showed the butcher's son had definitely put on the most muscle...he was actually a bit handsome underneath the soot and grime...shame he was a lout. Looks like it's you, then... She almost smirked as she grabbed his hand, ostensibly to remove it from her shoulder, but also to discharge the spell. As the beefy lad reeled in surprise, blinking, his lackeys began their usual mockeries.

"Welcome back, luv! Missed ya, we did!" the farmboy winked, nudging the urchin with an elbow.

"Oh, yeah, most the girls round 'ere are no fun; won't even put up a good chase no more!" the street kid leaned forward, his unwashed breath in Leah's face. "But you'll show us a good time, ey? Maybe you gotten faster since last season, give us a good run this go 'round, hm?"

Leah smiled with absolute confidence; the distant eyes of her target told her the spell had taken hold. He pulled the smelly breather away, shoving him back several feet. "No, I don't think I will, Riff..." The shock on the orphan boy's face was priceless, only widening her grin. "I think Brody's tired of seeing you two make sport of me." The strong-armed lad turned a disapproving look on the skinny boys, who now took a step back. "I bet you could show them they've been hounding the wrong fox, couldn't you Brody?" She giggled to herself as he grabbed them both by the arms with narrowed eyes.

As she turned to walk away, an impossibly devilish grin across her lips, she heard the thud and accompanying grunts of two bodies colliding in a painful manner. "Aye, bet I can, Leah..."
