About Persephone __Backstory:
Persephone was a happy kid in a wealthy family. The only child in the Pembrooke family. Her father dealt with pocket watches, exotic jewellery and the like and was often away finding new interesting things to sell and acquiring the items from his suppliers in different countries. But he was a loving father, and she liked him a lot. Her mother ran the household and the local shop where the jewellery were offered and sold. Persephone was around her mother all day tied to mother's apron strings.
To help with the household and with raising the kid a maid was hired when Persephone was five. Persephone never really liked that maid. She couldn't put her finger on it, but all affection from that woman felt artificial. A year later, her mother got sick. Doctors were called, and priests invited and a lot of money was spent, but her mysterious disease didn't get better. She got weaker and weaker and after three month, she died. The maid soon took over the responsibilities of the deceased and after a few month made advances to Persephone's father. The mourning father was not interested, but when the maid, after a year, finally gave him an ultimatum, that she would leave to marry someone else he gave in - believing it would be the best for Persephone. Things got worse for Persephone as her father and the stepmother had a kid together. Persephone's stepmother liked her own kid better and showed that on every occasion. Of course not openly in front of the father. This went on for several years. The marriage, which wasn't a good example from the start also got worse. There were regular arguments and accusations about money missing from the shop. Then the father got sick of the same mysterious disease. The stepmother lovingly took care of him and called doctors and priests, but again to no avail. He died within a month. With the father out of the way there was no need to hide the dislike for Persephone any more. Her little brother was treated like a prince, and she was tolerated at best. A lot of the household duties were dropped on her. What value she had to her stepmother showed very drastically when she had a tragic accident. She fell down a fight of stairs while carrying a sack of coals and broke her knee. Instead of spending money on restoring her leg, she ended up with a stiff knee and a permanent limp after some cheap treatment and weeks of pain. Over the years the stepmother wasted the fortune that the father earned. After the money was gone, and all jewellery and exotic trinkets in the shop sold, she started selling the valuables in the house. Finally they ended up being poor. The house is still there and some fancy clothes to keep up the facade. But beyond that, even food gets scarce. And the stepmother takes her frustration out on Persephone. Persephone now has to work as a scrub woman to earn money for the family. And when at home she has to work as the maid for her stepmother and her little brother. Her father and mother were Peter and Eleanor Pembrooke. Her half brother was named Michael. Loot:
