I haven't read all 72 posts, and don't really plan to, but it seems to me that there is something that was not said at the beginning of this thread.
I don't think there is anything wrong with a low stat. If the players roll their stats, then one of them HAS to be low--surely the DM doesn't expect the player to cheat? And if they do a point buy, does the DM expect then to make all their stats the same?
So then where is the problem? It would seem the issue is not that they have a low stat, but that they aren't playing the character that way. When I create a character with low int, or low cha, I try to find a reason for that. Is he not that bright? Is he quick, but uneducated? Is he badly scarred from battle, or does he just not bathe often enough?
Basically, I don't see that a low stat is an issue, but rather ignoring that stat. And in that case, it's a failure of the DM, not the player. The DM should hold the player responsible for his/her character build. If your character made a 3 INT fighter that is holding forth at the gates of the city, the DM should be stepping in.
EDIT: based on what people are saying about Peter Griffin and IQ scores--if the player has a 7 and the DM thinks he isn't able to solve something, then he fails the INT check, no matter what he rolls.
@)Pendent= Nope. G-chat is just for stuff like me telling you that I have posted and am waiting on you to reply and so on and so forth. I will only be doing it for combat for the most part. Using G-chat is how my group got through Cult of the Ebon Destroyers rather quickly. In any case, your character looks legit, however I suggest you take up your con a bit. Having only 6 hp is kinda risky even as level 1.
I'll look into G-chat (Google chat, I assume?) I can't make any promises since I can't access it at work.
About all I can do about HPs is change race. Witches start with 6 hp per the GtPFSOP, and elves get a -2 to CON, so it is what it is. I'll switch over to Half-elf tonight. That should help out some.
EDIT: Actually, using chat, I think I'm going to have to back out as well. I was going to just see how it goes, but I don't want to mess up the game by starting and then finding that I can't meet the chat group.
When it comes to combat I would like to communicate through G-chat so we can speed up combats if possible. So if you all can either make a Gmail account or have one, then things can run even smoother.
Maybe it won't matter, but if we're going to have to meet up for chat, doesn't that defeat the purpose of PbP?
Anyway, I'll post with my alias soon and post my character sheet. :D
EDIT: Hrm...can't seem to upload a file. I will have to post it tonight and link to it.
I'm picking my familiar for an official PFS level 1 witch, and I am terribly afraid of gimping myself with my familiar choice.
The ones I have it narrowed down to are:
***Raven -- can speak, add +3 to Appraise
***Hedgehog -- +2 to Will saves (seems useful. Since most of my hexes are Will saves, I assume those will show up a lot later from monsters too). Plus, I love hedgies ^_^
***Greensting Scorpion -- +2 Initiative. Initiative is always a good thing, especially for a 6 hp caster with no armor.
From the optimization standpoint, the scorpion would seem to be the best, although there is something to be said for flight and speech.
So is this a hugely important choice? Or is it almost entirely a flavor kind of thing?
I was thinking crossbow as well. I don't expect to fight at all, and chose spells to help deal with the eventuality that some irredeemably rude fellow gets all up in mah business (ie. Blindness, Bestow Curse, etc) but it's always good to be prepared. I think I'll follow the longspear/crossbow plan.
I'm hexed up quite a bit, I think, and I'm happy with my spells.
The problem I have is a minor one for a witch: I need to find some kind of weapon.
I realize I won't be fighting much. But since I assume my witch didn't spring into this world fully formed, he surely had to wield a weapon at some point.
at the same time, just picking a weapon for flavor seems like a lost opportunity. If I'm going to select a weapon, it should be one that might be useful. Here's what I've got to work with:
Basically 1 weapon proficiency of choice
About 4000-4500 gp to spend on the weapon (ie. magic, baby!)
What do people think? Any advice? Or do you need more information?
They can also learn from a scroll but requires converting it into a potion-like substance and feeding it to the familiar.
This is where I get stuck--if you are making the blood into a potion to learn the spell, why can't you just feed that to your familiar? Why create a potion to learn a spell so you can write a scroll that you make into a potion to teach your familiar a spell when you could just give them the original potion?
