Appearance, Background, and Personality:
APPEARANCE A native Chelaxian, Pellius could easily be confused with someone of Ulfen descent, which is where his family originated from. The young man has straight, blonde, almost silver, hair, that he keeps cut at shoulder length when it is not tied back in a ponytail. Unlike most Ulfen, he religiously shaves his facial hair, revealing a strong jawline and pleasant smile. A nasty, jagged scar crossed his left eye from forehead to cheek. He is fairly tall with a well-muscled from all the exercise his soldiering tasks demand. He prefers to wear studded leather armor, allowing him the freedom of movement his art requires. Brown leather breaches and boots suitable for riding complement his normal attire. Pellius fights with a longsword, the preferred weapon of his beloved deity, but he keeps a dagger close by as well as a light crossbow strapped to his horse’s saddle. BACKGROUND The Fullonna family was well respected in Westcrown, Cheliax for hundreds of years but that changed about 70 years ago when the House of Thrune took control of Cheliax. Pellius’s father, Gellius was just a baby at that time but later came to be the Patrach of the Fullonnas. The man tried to do as other noble families had done and swear fealty to Hell but the family’s deep devotion for Aroden and later his heir Iomedae was too strong. When it was all said and done, his family had been targeted for annihilation. Gellius fled with his only two surviving sons and headed to where Iomedae was strongest; he came to Vigil in Lastwall looking for hope and sense of purpose in his broken life. Instrumental to their escape was Dierik Ironcoffer, on old friend of the family; it was Dierik who suggested that the Fullonnas head towards Vigil. The three surviving members arrived and quickly took the Shield Mark; Gellius worked in Sancta Iomedaea where young Pellius spent a good amount of his time while his older brother had taken the Sword Mark and became one of the fabled stalwart defenders. Those early days formed the pious man that Pellius was to become while he waited and yearned to be like his older brother. Pellius took the Sword Mark as soon as he turned 18. His father died leaving the two brothers to fend for themselves shortly after. Pellius became an accomplished rider and soldier, defending the city of Vigil with pride for a few years. But the young man sensed that there was something else that he was meant to do. He came upon magic almost by chance and quickly started frequenting the civilian mage’s guild under the guidance of Ren Dendarvi. The old wizard took a special interest in him and Pellius was told that magic came natural to him. He also felt that way and was mesmerized by the few cantrips he quickly learned. Although elated by his magical study, Pellius did not give up his soldiering but was confounded as to how to blend both his duty and passion. Ren sensed the young man was torn and at the risk of losing such a gifted student introduced Pellius to one of the few magi that attended the civil guild. Young Pellius was elated at how he could combine both arts and soon started presenting himself for duty without his heavy armor, much to the dismay of his current commander. However, when the soldier proved himself in the battlefield, none could further object his choice of equipment. At that time, the young man caught the attention of Keyron Saiville, the Precentor Martial for Scouting, who asked him to join his ranks. The soldiering being done here was a bit different than what he was used to. The missions consisted in going deep into enemy territory, often behind enemy lines, with small numbers and accomplish specific, tactical tasks. Although not as good an outdoorsman as his brother was, who was also serving as a scout in his unit, Pellius brought another set of skills to the squad that his commander desired. These small units had to move quickly and adapt even quicker and having a magus was a great advantage. All was going well for the two brothers until they were ambushed by a band of orcs. The unit gave a good account of itself but half its members were captured, including Pellius’ brother. Although the remaining members tried to rescue them, in the end they had to turn back and inform of the larger orc contingent heading to Fort Firrine. [DM Note: Lost Kin campaign trait] Pellius has been asking his current commander for a leave of absence to go and search for his brother but his request keeps being refused. Although Keyron Saiville sympathizes with the young man, he believes that sending him alone into orc territory amounts to suicide and he cannot spare any men to accompany him at this time. In the past few days, Keyron has received news about a caravan heading into the Hold of Belkzen and has grudgingly given Pellius a leave of absence provided the magus finds a way to be part of the said caravan. Before Pellius left, Keyron reminded him that although he's momentarily not with the Crusade, he is expected to uphold his Sword Mark and all that it signifies. It was fortuitous that this caravan is led by Dierik Ironcoffer, who was a friend of his fathers and has risked much for the Fullonnas in the past. PERSONALITY His early life marked Pellius as a pious man, devoted to Iomedae, and with a deep hatred of the House of Thrune and their infernal allies. The young man is still passionate about magic and the abilities it confers him. The promise of improvement in his art keeps him studying as much as possible. Given the time he spends in his job, at the temple, and studying magic, it is no surprise that the young man has little time for anything else in his life. It’s as if he tries to fill every second of his waking life with something to do to avoid a much needed introspection. Pellius is easy going with a quick smile as long as his life values are not violated (deeply religious with a strong sense of duty). The magus’ has fond memories of Dierik, whom he remembers as an intrepid swashbuckler who helped smuggle his father and brother out of Cheliax but has not seen him since. |
