can ghorans wear armor and be proficient even though under "Defense Racial Traits" it lists "Ghorans have the plant type" which says that they are not proficient with armor?

I'm new to GMing and a cleric in my campaign under went a change after a tragic event causing him to want to change gods. I'm not sure what i should do involving what happens in the change, are there any penalties and what would he be allowed to change?

He was interested in changing his arctype, and targets of a few feats(ex: spell focus"transmutation" into spell focus"evocation") to better fit his new style.
