Cleric willing changing gods after life altering event

Homebrew and House Rules

I'm new to GMing and a cleric in my campaign under went a change after a tragic event causing him to want to change gods. I'm not sure what i should do involving what happens in the change, are there any penalties and what would he be allowed to change?

He was interested in changing his arctype, and targets of a few feats(ex: spell focus"transmutation" into spell focus"evocation") to better fit his new style.

It seems this would open up some good role-playing possibilities. I would allow it, but have some short term repercussions (the god who lost a cleric to another god wouldn't be happy about it).

One possibility is that the new faith cleric has 30 percent spell failure, which decreases by 10 percent per some pre defined time interval.

Normally this is handled by seeking out a priest of the new religion to be properly indoctrinated, possibly receiving an atonement spell to move them along (especially if an alignment shift is necessary). They'll probably lose their spells from their current patron as soon as the decision is made to change, though. There might be more leniency if the two deities are closely aligned or allied, though.

thank you both for your quick posting =D . I like the needing an atonement spell, but this still leaves me with what should i do involving changing feats, and and arctype?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

You could check out the Retraining rules. Have him go to a cleric of his new faith and pay the money and time to get retrained to the new archetype and all.
