Silver Crusade

Looking to start a Saturday or Sunday group playing Pathfinder.

What we have:
* an experienced non-killer GM available
* a space to play

We're looking for:
* emotionally mature gamers, as we're over 30 and would like to play, not deal with drama
* inexperienced players are fine--we're asking for simple common courtesies. (One example: calling or texting if you can't show up due to illness, work, or other issues.)

Playstyle of our group:
* tends toward semi-immersive role play and we're "rules, medium-style".
The rules shouldn't get in the way of the fun, but they should help define the world fairly.
We like backstory and sincerity.
Above all, we like to work together to have fun.

If this sounds like you and you're in the area--or willing to commute a bit--feel free to respond here or PM me.

Looking for decent group with some flexibility in schedule.
I offer an immersive spirit as an experienced player. Also I often bring snacks.

So...immersion. What do you as a player or a GM do to foster it within your group?

As noted in earlier threads, I've:

  • brought props like ancient coins or tankards
  • used outrageous and possibly annoying accents
  • worn costume-y bits, like the Kingmaker campaign where I wore a tiara the entire time I played (if you can picture that)
  • spoken in a different tone/inflection/speech pattern that wasn't related to accent
  • addressed individuals in character as much as possible during play

But I figure there must be tons of good immersion building ideas out there! How do you do foster immersion in your game?

In order to inject some extra fun into the new Runelords campaign my group is starting, I've decided to bring some character props and costume items.

I'm working on a Caileanite tabard since I'm playing a cleric of that particular faith. Also I'll be bringing a medieval-looking mug along. Just makes sense to me to add some color and fun to the already entertaining environment.

For Kingmaker, I ended up wearing a tiara for a time. Heh.

Other than coins (as per another thread), what props and/or costume items have you seen or used for adding color to your campaigns? I know GMs will often put out cool distressed looking maps or create some neat handouts but I'm curious about the player items. What and why?

There was a thread in the Gamer Talk area that has be a bit baffled. The word "rape" was used at some point, and the post that originally used it was removed. There are folks who justify using the term around the table.

Then we have all these threads stating females don't want to play Pathfinder in the same numbers as males. We have threads where the women say the culture doesn't always make them feel included.

So my questions are: If we're going to use such charged terms that affect one gender (women) much more negatively than another (men), can we as a community expect women to want to play? Also, just because a term has been co-opted by a group, does that really justify the term being used in such a way?

Personally I find the idea of yelling "I raped its face off, take that b+@*!ez!" to be Seriously Uncool. The majority of the women I game with now and that I have gamed with previously tell me they're uncomfortable with the idea of the term "rape" being used so lightly. Especially those that have lived through the experience of actual rape happening to them.

My kid is a teenager now, and I speak up when his friends say something like, "Dude, that's so gay." I speak up when they say, "That's so Jew-y" too. I speak up when someone says "Awwww sweet it's been thoroughly raped" when critical damage is taken.

But that's me.
What's your take on this issue? And why?

Every year, there comes one week that causes me and those around me more irritability than any other time of year, save for Black Friday shopping.
That week starts with the evil sleep depriving night of "Daylight Saving" time's start and stops around...oh...Friday night.

I like evening sunlight but I hate losing sleep! And this year, DST has teamed up with that insidious organization that pushes the most addictive substance in the world--yes, I'm talking about...Girl Scouts and their evil, evil cookies!!!

More positive note: Easter is on its way. That means hard boiled eggs and chocolates!

Other than the Gamer Connection area of the forums here, how do you find other groups to play with?

I've got these challenges:

1. my ex worked at our FLGS
2. ex has 3/4 of the old group still with him, I guess; I don't feel like poaching players
3. ex also got a local listing for the gamer connection area
4. a lot of the old places online that I used to look for groups are gone...

The connection one gets by playing F2F with others is a big draw for me. I miss it, and I miss my old group too. What advice do my fellow gamers have for finding new groups?

Due to a nasty breakup, my precious Friday night group has shattered like some incredibly fragile but slightly enchanted item. While that majorly sucks, I'm hopeful that there's a group out here in the Tacoma area needing a player who is incredibly good at playing a character; a group that has a need for someone who really has enthusiasm for playing a pretty developed "person".

I'm looking for a Friday evening, Saturday, or Sunday afternoon Pathfinder group. We gotta be compatible. I won't play with a group I can't either audition for or audition with. (And I may be able to sweet-talk one of my Friday night RPG rawkgawds into playing with us if we're all sympatico.)

So yeah...PM me if you want to audition a player who can really bring some character magic into your campaign.

For the happy winter holidays, my terribly sweet partner got me:
AMETHYST dice!!

What cool game-related gifts made you smile, jump up and down, and squee with delight? Or other cool gifts in general did you give or receive?

In what is now Friday group, we started with a Curse of the Crimson Throne campaign. Eventually everyone decided to get themselves a horse, since we were going places outside Korvosa. Places where it'd be advantageous not to carry our own stuff all the time. Places where it would be faster to travel if one used horses.

I swear my character was cursed or something when it came to horses.

Horse I: Died in a nasty random encounter in the dead of night. None of us work up in time. Horse I dead. Nym feels terrible about not defending Horse.

Horse II: Victim of a nasty combination of Cinderlands vapor fumes and party sorceror's fireball. Horse II dead. Nym wants to slap sorceror but realizes Horse II didn't have Evasion, but still feels guilty about bringing Horse II into a bad situation.

Horse III: Nasty storm in the Cinderlands. Rocks and sand are sharp, tearing and rending Horse III! It's then that Nym shrugs and first utters, "Horse dead. Moving on."

I never did buy another horse during the CotCT campaign...

There is a recent post about the differences between role players and roll players. One of the points that was made was that "no one asks for role-playing advice".

Well, okay...let's change that. What is your best piece of role-playing advice for character building/world interaction? How do you personalize your character in the role-playing sense?

Silver Crusade

Who is/was your group's favorite NPC, from which AP, and why?

Silver Crusade

Due to a huge misunderstanding between myself and my former Saturday group, we've parted ways. I'm on hiatus from the group until I can organize my thoughts on what happened on my end, and more importantly how to improve my own self because of the situation. (It appears the misunderstanding was due to miscommunication, and a large chunk of that on my end. I also kind of overreacted, um, a whole lot.)

I want and feel the need to apologize for at minimum my part of the misunderstanding and lack of communication. I realize both myself and a majority of the group ended up with a fairly dire communication breakdown, and I want to take responsibility for my part of it. While I realize that I'm going to need some time--quite a bit of processing time actually--I'd like to have some thoughts on the matter to mentally chew on.

I know this community has seen many group fall-outs over the years. I tried skimming the threads on the subject, and may have just missed this, so feel free to point me elsewhere...

Is there any advice you would give on how to apologize well after a miscommunication/misunderstanding of group-breaking magnitude?

Silver Crusade

I know I can't be the only one here who's daydreamed about a campaign or character situation and popped into "troubleshooting life" mode.

Yesterday I was dealing with some stressful situations both at work and outside work, and my mind started to wander to Friday night campaign. After reviewing last week's events, I started to think about next session. But the next thing I know, my young fighter is giving me advice on my current troubles. (And pretty good advice, actually. I'm glad I spent the points for the fighter to have a positive Wisdom score! LOL)

The advice: "Communicate better. State what you need and why."

What was the best advice you've ever gotten from a character, either your own or someone else's?
