People:
Jan Hooft: A halfling retainer of the DeSuis family. He was once Claude Desuis's premier clean up man, he was a willing operative, whether the mission was to frame or kill someone, that never asked questions. While he does not regret these deeds, his proudest moment is when he took the initiative to climb onto the Renier's roof to rescue the infant Nicholas. This is the one thing he has ever done that he is sure was good and noble. He has always had a soft spot for Nicholas and is very protective of him. Jan is now very old. He needs a cane to walk and is growing senile. He still considers himself a DeSuis retainer, though in truth he is more of a dependent. He still seeks to contribute, though unless the subject is something that happened 20 years ago he is rarely of any help. Philippe Sarti: After his wife's death, Philippe became disgusted with noble politics and joined the order of Hala. He has been investigating his wife's death, so far with little success. He is beginning to question his earlier assumption that the DeSuis family as a whole was connected with the cult, though he has trouble admitting this because of his hatred of the family. He also suspects that Nicholas is his wife's son, even though the DeSuis never formally acknowledged Nicholas's parentage. He has developed an irrational hatred for Nicholas, though he has never actually spoken with him, and is secretly tormented by guilt for having exposed the infant (which he channels into hatred for Nicholas and the DeSuis). At the root of this is the nagging doubt that Eloise may have been pregnant before she was raped and that Nicholas may in fact be his son. The Baron: No one knows exactly how long the Baron has been in Port-a-Lucine, everyone agrees it is more than 200 years. Through a series of land deals in quartier marchand he has become very wealthy. This wealth was largely inadvertent, the properties he bought appreciated substantially over decades. The rest of his wealth was gained through a series of marriages to minor merchants, the long life from elf blood is always a desirable quality. He has been married three times which has led him to leading a rather large clan. This clan (which includes some illegitimate members as well) manages his properties and businesses, which aside from dispute resolution, allows him to focus on other things. The Baron's real focus is on his inventing. He has a large warehouse that he has converted into a lab. His current passion is with diving, he has a desire to explore the sea floor. This is just the most recent in a series of enthusiasms, the Baron has always lacked focus. While he is mostly focused on his tinkering some past enthusiasms have dipped a little into the magical arts. His spellcasting abilities reflect his tendency towards brief obsessions, he likely has a level or two in multiple classes but no more than this (likely a level or two of wizard and alchemist, perhaps something more exotic as well). As a contact, he is able to offer Nicholas access to his facilities for crafting and magical item creation. Through his clan he also knows most of what is going on in town granting a bonus to craft knowledge local.
Standing orders:
Nicholas will attempt to engage in ranged combat whenever possible. He will try to stay behind cover and will fight very cautiously.
Once he has one, he will prefer to fight with a pistol. Until then, he will use his TK Fist ability:
If forced to he will defend himself with his dagger (+1, 1d4) but if at all possible will seek to restore some distance between himself and a threat. Generally, he will try to avoid killing enemies preferring to disable them. He finds killing rather final and would prefer to be able to gain information from them or possibly recruit them (especially if they are just hired thugs). He doesn't have any particular qualms about killing but if he is going to do so prefers that it send a message rather than just happening in a street brawl. |
