I played D&D first edition for years and then many years passed and now I'm running a game using Pathfinder rules. One major difference is it's much more difficult to create NPCs for the party to interact with since the previous rules didn't include skills and feats and if you remember, the combat system was a simple grid where you only needed armor class and character level.
An example might be: the party is in an Inn waiting to meet with a messenger from a local official regarding a job/adventure and one member picks a fight with a 6th level fighter at the bar and his friends. Now I need stats on hand for a group of NPCs on the fly. What's the best way to handle this?
