I think it would be nice to send them a message, with zero pressure on them to join in. I wasn't sure if they were still online.

They had mentioned upthread they might have to drop out but were going to try to stick with this. But that was one of their last posts.

I feel bad for not bringing this up sooner, but we haven't seen Miruna in quite awhile, have we? We've had so many slow periods... all understandable... so I've not thought much of people posting very little. But I recall the player had been having a rough time of it. I hope they're okay....

Yes, it's sort of like, if we're just bringing tribute, that isn't an acknowledgement of his strength, it's saying Canterwall is too weak to stand up to him. Which isn't in our best interests.

I made a HeroForge mini for Nadiya. For kicks and giggles, here it is.

Not trying to slow down the scene with Nadiya's point but get things moving and encourage engagement. If what she says becomes more of an obstacle than a precursor to plot movement I can try to navigate past that. Nor do I want to get the party killed. :) (But she is a bit leery of just handing over the city's coffers to keep on this unseen guy's good side.)

Further extortion! Nadiya thinks as Ardax asks for this "tribute." First their escort demands an unconscionable amount just to get them here safely--about 9 years of a common porter's daily wages--now a demand for tribute.

Her frown is visible, and she is about to likely ruin the entire negotiation by blurting, "A strong man does not beg."

Perhaps fortunately for all, just as her mouth forms the, "A-" Bashuk intervenes, focused--as Nadiya knows they all should be--on the matter of the earthquakes. She filters her rebellious thoughts through the other matter at hand.

"Perhaps, on the other hand, though we have dwarven allies we could possibly negotiate the services of to investigate the matter, the Lord of Urgir is not truly interested in recruiting their aid, if he simply prefers gifts to decorate his throne instead."

The better part of her knows she still should have kept her mouth shut. The indignant part has yet to care.

When Nadiya gets a moment that is slightly more private--but before they speak to the Lord of Urgir--she moves close to Valeska. She tries to take care not to look conspiratorial, simply discussing a quiet matter, as she's aware they likely won't escape all eyes and ears.

"I have traveled since I was but a babe. Never have I heard of earthquakes going on so long. They usually come and go... or presage a volcanic lava flow, which also would not take so long, nor do I believe there are live volcanoes here. Logically... this means there is something less natural causing this. Probably deep below. And indeed, the dwarves' knowledge may be critical to determine this but---if they do not stop, this is a constant danger to the peoples who live here."

Nadiya's eyebrows raise when he mentions the tremors--for three generations! She bites her tongue before asking the obvious question: why don't you leave? As she already knows the answer: it would be a show of weakness.

Instead she focuses on what the cause might be, whether natural or supernatural, if she's heard of this in the area before, and the likelihood whether the city is doomed.

She smiles at the sight of rambunctious children, for it is a comfort of a sort. There is no time to ask them for stories though, and she follows the party with Nirdosh.

As Ardax greets them, Nadiya strokes Mishka in her basket, keeping herself calm and her familiar quiet, and waits for the countess to speak.

The other thing Nadiya does while they wait is see if there are children around. It is possible, of course, that the denizens here wisely keep their children below ground and not where visitors come. But if there are children, seeing how healthy they look and if they feel safe enough to play is always a good indicator of a state of a city. They also tell stories with abandon that adults may be reticent about.

Forever fascinated by local lore and what one can learn from our history, Nadiya stops and gives a good look at the mosaics, seeing if she can identify any notable tales--or fill in any gaps of lost lore, particularly those that might be of interest to their potential dwarven allies with whom they'd been speaking before heading this way.

Nadiya responds in Orc, "Hmm. I think we saw some of their children, or cousins, as we passed through. Not as fearsome, but still would be a fine conquest for the daring..."

Maybe, she thinks, if they seek out the smaller wyrmlings, it might bolster their courage or help them come up with some solutions to their larger problem. Or just serve as a useful tip.

Once there was a sign things were going to push forward for awhile, Nadiya would cast bear's endurance on herself for a boost. She's an experienced enough traveler to have a good sense of how much on foot time she can take before needing a boost. Mishka like any intelligent cat would be riding in her basket most of the way so I'm not sure she would need to make the check.

Noticed the NPC being called "an orc brave." Please don't use the word "brave" as a noun to describe an indigenous-type warrior. It's derogatory to Native Americans (and more so to liken them to a monstrous creature, even though I know that was not the intent).

And I once, in a professional capacity, had to tell James Jacobs the same thing, so it isn't always well known. :) But I'd appreciate it.

Nadiya is not keen on the payment demands, but trusts that Valeska is likely doing what's best to avoid conflict. There's enough dangers in this place as it is. She is not fond of orcs, even though she is too young to remember the slaughter an orcish tribe visited upon her family. Nonetheless, she would prefer not to have more blood shed.

Mishka carefully slinks away and moves toward her mistress (uses the withdraw action) and jumps into Nadiya's basket.

Just realized I hadn't updated my hex effects since 5th level so that's fixed now.

Nadiya would likely cast mage armor earlier in the day, which has a 7 hour duration. Is it still up? I am willing to take no for an answer, but wanted to check.

As soon as Mishka's fear prickles the back of her mind, Nadiya jumps to her feet. She still has strapped to her the harvester's basket turned cat satchel on her hip, and waves her hand, mentally sending to her cat that jumping in would be a good idea.

If she has, she will turn turn, eyes blazing in anger, and cast ear piercing scream at the nearest predatory bird.

Sonic Damage: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 5) = 14; DC 15 Fortitude save halves damage, failure dazes target in addition to the damage.

She frowns, at herself, wondering why she suddenly feels drawn to the danger, when she full knows the others are right. She absently reaches for Mishka's head to scratch. Perhaps she has been on the road--by her reckoning, years, not this specific trip--too long.

At the dilemma posed by Miruna and Valeska's ensuing question, Nadiya chuckles as Leta and Nashik weigh in. "Maybe I am getting too much fresh air. I was going to suggest the opposite: that we are well equipped to handle undead and would be better off doing that than prematurely angering the locals before we can obtain. The tokens. I am never one to want a fight, but if things went poorly, I'd rather have to kill undead than an orc. Or other person. That said, I trust Leta's knowledge of what lies in the wilderness and what Bashuk knows of the peoples here, so I will readily defer to what they think is the least likely higher risk. What do our guides recommend?"

Presuming Kain describes what he saw, Nadiya asks, "Draconic? How big?"

Mishka stops "helping" Nadiya make breakfast, and goes an helps the rest of the party wake up by inviting them to scritch her, which should obviously be the most invigorating thing one should do (she does not bother anyone who does not want to be bothered, however).

Question: can I prepare my spells for the day we are about to have, or, whatever is to come, would I still have my previous day's spells (including spells spent, which would be one first level spell as she'd use her mount spell traveling the day before?). Once they were in the ruined area she'd probably dispense with the mount spell and do some different preps.

If I can still get away with this... Looking to make a mildly stimulating beverage a la coffee or energy drink. Something that would lightly improve saving throws to avoid falling asleep or something. If there's a gp cost I can try to make it, she does have her cauldron feature and her crafting kit

As camp is set up, Nadia sets up her cauldron and her.alchemy ingredients (which for Nadiya are more likely to be things like herbal decoctions and tinctures over reagents) and attempts to make a beverage that will help the watch stay awake.

"Sometimes we name things for what once was," Nadiya says to Bashuk, and relates what she knows of Bleakwall's history. After she finishes telling it, she adds, "I expect the rumors of cults in the region have some grain of truth, given what we learned about the Whispering Way in the catacombs. Even if the rumors were once unfounded, more recent groups might have settled here, figuring most would not seek them out indeed because they were likely to dismiss any news of their presence as more rumor."
