Arcanist Exploits
Dimensional Slide (Su) - The arcanist can expend 1 point from her arcane reservoir to create a dimensional crack that she can step through to reach another location. This ability is used as part of a move action or withdraw action, allowing her to move up to 10 feet per arcanist level to any location she can see. This counts as 5 feet of movement. She can only use this ability once per round. She does not provoke attacks of opportunity when moving in this way, but any other movement she attempts as part of her move action provokes as normal.

Familiar (Ex) - An arcanist with this exploit can acquire a familiar as the arcane bond wizard class feature, using her arcanist level as her wizard level to determine any of the statistics and abilities of the familiar. If the arcanist receives a familiar from another class, her levels of arcanist stack with the levels from that class when determining the familiar’s statistics and abilities (this ability does not stack with a familiar gained through the bloodline development exploit; she must choose one or the other).

Quick Study (Ex) - The arcanist can prepare a spell in place of an existing spell by expending 1 point from her arcane reservoir. Using this ability is a full-round action that provokes an attack of opportunity. The arcanist must be able to reference her spellbook when using this ability. The spell prepared must be of the same level as the spell being replaced.

Arcane Reservoir +1 DC or CL (11/day) (Su) - An arcanist has an innate pool of magical energy that she can draw upon to fuel her arcanist exploits and enhance her spells. The arcanist’s arcane reservoir can hold a maximum amount of magical energy equal to 3 + the arcanist’s level. Each day, when preparing spells, the arcanist’s arcane reservoir fills with raw magical energy, gaining a number of points equal to 3 + 1/2 her arcanist level. Any points she had from the previous day are lost. She can also regain these points through the consume spells class feature and some arcanist exploits. The arcane reservoir can never hold more points than the maximum amount noted above; points gained in excess of this total are lost.

Points from the arcanist reservoir are used to fuel many of the arcanist’s powers. In addition, the arcanist can expend 1 point from her arcane reservoir as a free action whenever she casts an arcanist spell. If she does, she can choose to increase the caster level by 1 or increase the spell’s DC by 1. She can expend no more than 1 point from her reservoir on a given spell in this way.

Conjurer's Focus (Summon Monster IV, 8 minutes) (Sp) - An occultist can spend 1 point from her arcane reservoir to cast summon monster I. She can cast this spell as a standard action and the summoned creatures remain for 1 minute per level (instead of 1 round per level). At 3rd level and every 2 levels thereafter, the power of this ability increases by one spell level, allowing her to summon more powerful creatures (to a maximum of summon monster IX at 17th level), at the cost of an additional point from her arcane spell reserve per spell level. An occultist cannot have more than one summon monster spell active in this way at one time. If this ability is used again, any existing summon monster immediately ends. This ability replaces the arcanist exploit gained at 1st level.

Consume Spells (3/day) (Su) - At 1st level, an arcanist can expend an available arcanist spell slot as a move action, making it unavailable for the rest of the day, just as if she had used it to cast a spell. She can use this ability a number of times per day equal to her Charisma modifier (minimum 1). Doing this adds a number of points to her arcane reservoir equal to the level of the spell slot consumed. She cannot consume cantrips (0 level spells) in this way. Points gained in excess of the reservoir’s maximum are lost.

Deliver Touch Spells Through Familiar (Su) - If the master is 3rd level or higher, a familiar can deliver touch spells for him. If the master and the familiar are in contact at the time the master casts a touch spell, he can designate his familiar as the “toucher.”
The familiar can then deliver the touch spell just as the master would. As usual, if the master casts another spell before the touch is delivered, the touch spell dissipates.

Empathic Link with Familiar (Su) - The master has an empathic link with his familiar to a 1 mile distance. The master can communicate empathically with the familiar, but cannot see through its eyes. Because of the link's limited nature, only general emotions can be shared. The master has the same connection to an item or place that his familiar does.

Planar Contact (Sp) - At 7th level, an occultist can cast augury once per day and contact other plane once per week, using her arcanist level as her caster level. This ability replaces the arcanist exploit gained at 7th level.

Planar Spells - An occultist adds all planar ally spells to her spell list (using her arcanist level as the cleric level), and treats plane shift as a 5th-level arcanist spell.

Share Spells with Familiar - The wizard may cast a spell with a target of “You” on his familiar (as a touch spell) instead of on himself. A wizard may cast spells on his familiar even if the spells do not normally affect creatures of the familiar's type (magical beast).

Soul Focus (Ex) - Your familiar is bound to soul fragment crystal inserted into it.

Speak with Familiar (Ex) - If the master is 5th level or higher, a familiar and the master can communicate verbally as if they were using a common language. Other creatures do not understand the communication without magical help.

Background:

The Fools of Thrune. The Lapdogs of Hell. House Sarini is known by many names in Cheliax. Notable for producing many scions of a particularly cruel and macabre bent, who often act as jesters and entertainers at court as well at executions. Some whisper that they do this as punishment for some long-ago offense against House Thrune, others insist that they willingly accept these tasks and in fact revel in them. But not all of House Sarini follow this path. Some enter the priesthood of Asmodeus, while others study the arcane - all with an eye towards gaining favor with House Thrune and elevating their own position within Cheliax. Morvena Sarini, born to the Sarinis of Kintargo, was expected to be one of these.

From an early age, Morvena demonstrated an inherent interest and talent for the arcane arts. She was given everything necessary to cultivate her talents - the finest tutors in magical theory and the highest-quality spell components and alchemical ingredients that money could buy. No expense was spared for this nor for the other pursuits and schooling expected of a young noblewoman - lessons in history and the faith of Asmodeus, language studies and proper etiquette were all a part of her curriculum as well. And under these conditions, she thrived and grew into a beautiful, intelligent, and talented young woman. Everything was perfectly laid out for her - she would become a powerful warlock and eventually make a match with a young man from one of the other houses, all for the glory of Cheliax, House Thrune, and House Sarini. But in one night, it all changed and altered Morvena's path forever more.

Though she was largely the picture of a proper Chelish noblewoman, Morvena did have a soft spot - her younger sister Pavanna. Pavanna had been born weak and frail, not expected to survive past early childhood. In defiance of all odds, she survived and grew although she was never truly healthy - in fact, she took ill quite often. She was of a quieter and more withdrawn nature, often preferring to be alone with her paints and easel though she loved her parents and her older sister Morvena, who would spend as much time with her as her duties would allow. But there was no room in House Sarini for weakness. When a blood sacrifice was required of the family, Morvena's parents gave up their weak, sickly daughter without a moment's hesitation.

Afterward, Morvena was left broken and weeping alone in her room. She couldn't understand it. House Sarini had been nothing but faithful to Asmodeus and House Thrune for years and years - there was no question of their loyalty. So why were they forced to make such a sacrifice? Why didn't her parents make any effort to find another way? In the days and weeks following Pavanna's death, Morvena went about her daily routines as usual but inside her mind these questions repeated themselves and inside her heart, her loyalty to Asmodeus and everything she'd ever known was beginning to wither and die...

Geoffrey Piersym:

Hired by her father as her own personal bodyguard, Morvena's relationship with Geoffrey has largely been a slightly distant, professional sort of relationship until very recently. Possibly the only other person besides Pavanna who knows Morvena best, the small changes in her demeanor after Pavanna's murder did not go unnoticed by him. When the realization came to Morvena that she no longer held any loyalty to Asmodeus, her family, or House Thrune, Geoffrey was the one who helped her flee and insisted on accompanying her thereafter.

Appearance:

Morvena is 18 years old and stands a rather tall 5'7". She has the pale skin and dark hair that is often associated with those of Chelaxian stock and her eyes are a pale gray-blue color.

Personality:

Courtesy of Ash's Guide to RPG Personality & Background.

Primary Motivator - Rebellion
Secondary Motivator - Creation
Emotional Disposition - Angry
Moodiness - Even Tempered
Outlook - Pessimistic (Cynical)
Integrity - Conscientious (Meticulous)
Impulsiveness - Controlled (Focused)
Boldness - Cautious (Vigilant)
Agreeableness - Agreeable (Adaptable)
Interactivity - Engaging (Candid)
Conformity - Conventional (Formal)

Cynical and surprisingly blunt at times, Morvena projects an air of detached calm in nearly everything she does. She tries to hide the anger she feels at Asmodeus and his followers for taking her sister from her, but in secret she has begun offering prayers to Calistria to aid her in her desire for vengeance against them. Although she tells herself that she does this because it's no one else's concern but her own, deep down a part of her knows that her companion Geoffrey would not approve of it.

Character Development:

At this point in time, Morvena is under an enormous amount of stress as nearly every facet of her life and her very being is in flux. In OOC terms, she has already shifted alignment from LE to LN and is currently at a crossroads on how to continue. A large part of her desires vengeance and wishes to see everything Thrune has built burn to the ground, which would likely push her towards shifting to CN. However, the other PCs and events of the game may influence her desire to rebel in a more altruistic direction which would potentially shift her to CG or NG over time. This is something that I would really enjoy seeing play out in the game, no matter which direction she ends up going in. With her starting alignment of LN and potentiality for a shift to CN, I promise I will not allow either one to become an issue for the game.
