Mortimus was born to a family of devote Kuthites and was raised as a diligent member of the twisted faith. By the age of seven he willingly gave his own index finger to know the Dark Prince's favor and by twelve taken his first life - a family servant - all to please his patron, Zon-Kuthon.

After passing through adulthood and being admitted to the formal clergy, he found the continued growth of his faith stifled. Order was necessary, all suffering was met with a proper reward after all, but the structure of the organization he found himself a part of kept him from expanding his understanding of what it is to suffer and worse, kept him sharing his faith with others. He prayed and fasted, he asked the Dark Prince to show him what he should do.
Finally, in a series of cripplingly painful visions, he was shown a dark lady well versed in suffering and better still, she had ties to the necromantic arts. She was not of the faith, but he knew where his path laid. He would seek her out and serve her in exchange for training and knowledge.
