Description:
Morala was born in Taldor, but she doesn't know who her parents were. It isn't surprising really- a Tiefling child caries a certain stigma. It doesn't matter whether you are high born or beardless, nobody want to claim a child with horns and a tail.
Morala was raised in an orphanage run by the brothers and sisters of Cayden Cailean. It was a happy childhood. The orphanage was poor, but she was well cared for and was treated as a child- not a demon. The orphanage survives on grants from the nobility. Some nobles do it out of the goodness of their hearts, some for the social benefits of visible charity, and other have a more selfish interest at heart.
Every year, some patrons make a special visit to the orphanage. The orphans put on a big show for the visiting nobles and everyone dines on a big feast- it is the highlight of the year. Special orphans are chosen for patronage. They are sent to a school or apprenticed to someone in the house. In return, the orphan becomes a retainer of that house. The nobles look for magically active orphans or ones with superior physical assets.
It was at one of these feasts that Morala was chosen by house Valtros. She demonstrated incredible dexterity and they recognized the magical spark in her. She was sent to a fencing academy to hone her talent, and was tutored in the arcane arts by Maximillian Valtros- the only Magus in the house. Maximillian was elderly, but he was a good teacher and the fencing academy was one of the best in Taldor.
Morala learned quickly, but her training wasn't quick enough to aid House Valtros. While she was studying at the academy, House Valtros was virtually wiped out in one fell swoop. The family was slaughtered and their villa was burnt to the ground. Maximillian took off to investigate when word arrived, but she never heard from him again. The school let her finish her training even though the money had stopped- she did odd jobs and assisted the apothecary.
When she finished her training, it was time to make her way in the world. She had become quite skilled at the alchemical arts, but she figured she would need to use her sword arm to pay the bills. There were lots of opportunities for sellsword work, but fall of House Valtros had shown her the inevitable results of house warfare. Besides, who remembers the mercenaries? They erect monuments to the guys who hire them- not the guys who bleed on the field.
Unable to find the right path, she turned to her family- brothers and sisters of Cayden Cailean. They showed her another way. She could go to Absalom and join the Pathfinder Society. She could use her talents for a noble cause instead of partisan bickering. This was the opportunity she was looking for. She could make a name for herself while doing something meaningful. Someday, she may even follow Cyden in transcending mortality itself.
