I went the extra mile and turned all spellcasting into psionics-based spell points.

I would play more spellcasters if they included "Spell Points" because while I do prefer spontaneous casters over prepared casters the whole "1 shot wonder" spellcasters makes my ears and eyes bleed...

That's the ONE thing about d20 Magic I despise with an undying passion. I'm a Wizard [or whatever, your choice] and I can do ONE thing..on average.. ONE and then I might as well head back to town and have an ale.

I agree entirely but I find Pathfinder to be more centered towards 'gaining levels' than actual character development.

Sadly that's the biggest reason I no longer really play the game anymore. Everyone I know is more interested in killing X gaining Y than worrying about ANYTHING character story related.

Page 72 APG says yes you can

Alternate Class Features so yes you may.

Helped I read it...

Thanks Madclaw :) It helped I read the stupid thing again :p

Liberty's Edge

I was asked by a fellow Pathfinder Player about multiclassing into the same base class [take Fighter for instance] but having a different Variant. I thought I had read you cannot but I can't remember where it says you cannot [or can and I misread] Thanks to all!

Not sure if this fits so please forgive me

Personally I feel that the Improved Unarmed Strike is really underpowered for a Feat.
1. You have the ability to be Armed when your Unarmed [awesome]
2. You have the ability to do either Lethal or Non-Lethal Damage [awesome]

Any extra damage? Nope not a lick and I have seen trained fighters, Boxing and/or Martial Arts, be able to do more damage to their opponents because they KNEW where to hit them not because of their Strength. Their Strength was secondary to their knowledge of where to hit them and how to hit them. To me This is what a Martial Artist should have the ability to deal more Damage than the 'base' amount that ever Tom, Dick or Harry can do.

Also Paizo REALLY needs to work on a non-Armor AC/Defense for those concepts that don't use Armor but you have to to live. Concepts such as an Acrobatic Warrior or example a Character who forgoes Armor in favor of Skill and Grace over Bulky Armor.

Personally I'd love to see them reinvest in the Class Defense Rules, or somehow modify them, from Unearthed Arcana. Those were at least useable to help with more concepts I have had as well as my players.

my humble 2 cents

I don't have exactly Monk hatred I just don't like the fact that they have to be Lawful seeing as really any alignment can be just as dedicated to enlightenment or the Monks way of life, but that's just me.

One reason I'd love to see the Battle Dancer redone for Pathfinder, a non-lawful martial artist

The same can be said with Paladins. To me any Good Alignment can be a Paladin not just Lawful Good.

XP wise I generally go 100 XP x Average Party Level per session and it's been good so far due to the fact many of my games are more Social/Mental than just hack and slash but that's my personal style.

As Armor/AC still goes I guess it's my interpretation is why I dislike the whole Armor/AC thing. To me it has never, in any incarnation of the game, that your gonna be far better at hitting something as you level but your still gonna such getting hit? No No No... a trained person, warriors aside, that gets in enough scrapes is gonna know how the heck to get out of the way but as it's written no PC, save Monks, get this ability and to me it isn't fair. It simply don't make sense to me.

Liberty's Edge

I guess I really liked Exalted in the fact that the souls just kept cycling that is unless something stopped them or they became a ghost etc.

The Class Defense is a good Idea and I've tried it before but it's hard to do as a plug-n-play aspect, at least for me.

I guess I dislike the fact that the more experienced you are [ie levels] you can hit anything but heaven forbid you have no idea how to dodge worth a flip.

I have been pondering incorporating something similar to the BAB Idea that Remco Sommeling, said but have it to where you wear armor you get the armor bonus like normal if you don't, or choose not to, you get your BAB to AC.

though I still like SAGA's Reflex Defense to hit it made sense because to me Armor is DR not Defense in the core respect of it. To me a Warrior in Platemail is gonna be easy to hit but a pain to hurt.

I agree Overdark... they should have rewritten Improved Unarmed Strike to actually be worth something.

Thanks all
Chris

4. [because as I posted the first 3 it came to me >.<]
Is there a way, other than my own house rule, that characters who have improved unarmed strike gain more damage than someone without it? The idea that Monks are the only unarmed masters is kinda silly personally and something even from 3 and 3.5 I never liked save for when they introduced the Battle Dancer, a non-lawful martial artist, in the Complete Dragon Hardback. To me improved unarmed strike, as it stands, isn't worth purchasing if the only thing you get is the ability to be considered armed which just isn't worth the feat. To me if you have someone who has improved fighting skill they know how to cause more damage than someone without it which would indicate an advance in damage.

1. Is there a way, with the current setting, for the concept of reincarnation? I read the Gods of Golarion [sp?] and the one Goddess of Death's entry bothered me in that I like the concept of reincarnation instead of the just one life nonsense. IF there was a way to incorporate it into the setting how would one do it?

2. Is there ANY way to make a character that gains better defenses as they raise in level aside from purchasing Armor? Many of mine and my friends character ideas eschew armor because it don't fit the concept at all and as it stands you either wear armor or your screwed. There has got to be some way to cater to those style of concepts over the Mail wearing warrior or the Leather dominatrix rogue. I think that was the one thing about Star Wars SAGA I loved was that a characters Defense was their Reflex Defense + 10 + Level + 1/2 Armor Bonus [if the appropriate Feat/Talent was taken] or for that matter all their saves were based on their level which to me made a lot of sense. I am thinking of trying to figure out a way to incorporate it into my Games but still even Pathfinder has to have some way to help incorporate character concepts better.

3. Is there a base XP award for a session in the Core Book by chance? I may have missed it but as for my games I give 100 XP x average party level for each session even if no combat or anything happened.

Thanks in advance
Chris

Liberty's Edge

Nothing really.

I played 3.0 and 3.5 a lot but to be honest Pathfinder has them beat by loads. The only thing I can really say I miss are Character Flaws though I'd love to see something akin Mutants and Masterminds Complications where they give you Hero Points whenever they arise. I just find D20 styled Games dull with no noticeable flaws to the characters regardless of their back story, which I wish I could game with most of you people who actually USE a back story ><.

But over all Pathfinder is everything I wanted 3.5 to be and more

Edit cause my memory sucks....

Spell Points over the Verdun [sp?] Spells per day nonsense. At least I remade it for my game since it was open content... it just... hurt my brain... numbers were everywhere!

Liberty's Edge

I tend to agree with the dislike of the Alignments as it's been stated. I have been playing D&D and D20 Games since... well a long time and to be honest out of every game system I've ever seen whose Alignment System I loved, though not the actual Game System, was Palladium Games. Their Alignment's actually made sense to me AND they gave 'feel' to the character of what they will and will not do.

I do wish Paizo could do something akin to that though.

my 2 cents and your humble servant

Liberty's Edge

If anyone would like it I redone the Spell Point Rules from Unearthed Arcana to Pathfinder for my TT Group and they quite enjoy it. Took me about 4 hours or so to redo the whole thing but hey I prefer Spell Points over Spell Slots for perhaps much the same reasons as other people do.

Liberty's Edge

Actually I just revamped the Class Defense Bonus from Unearthed Arcana since it was under the Open Game License and if anyone would like to see it just ask :)

I got sick and tired of the nonsense of "when you level you can hit better but your still an idiot when it comes to defense?"

In essence it worked out, at least in my Game I'm doing, that the AC granted by Armor grants DR instead since I have always hated the whole "it deflects!" nonsense when Armor to me IS Armor it absorbs damage. In it if you wear Armor, depending on your Class Bonus, you get 1/2 your class bonus + DR equal to the Armor in question but the DR is not against Magic UNLESS the armor is Magical in nature for example we'll take a 1st level Ranger

Dex 16 [+3] Class Bonus [+3] Studded Leather [+3 AC]

in my ruling if the Ranger wears the Studded Leather he/she has a AC of 15 [1/2 of 3 round up] with DR 3. If they so chose not to wear Armor their AC is 16 but lose the benefit of Damage Reduction. Yes it slows it down but -shrugs- my friends went for it right away caus they liked how I presented it.

Liberty's Edge

I am not sure exactly how the Golarion-specific setting does it, since it's out of print at every store I've been to and cannot get a copy, but via the Pathfinder Core Book it specifically says that when a PC dies and they do not follow a Deity their soul departs to the Domain that their Alignment belongs to page 208 PFCRB.

As an aside, in my Chronicle I am doing the Golarion specific Deities have taken interest in my World, or rather part of it, and have instigated reincarnation in which after a certain amount of time, years, centuries, etc that soul is reborn in a new body and under usual circumstances doesn't recall any memories save for perhaps brief flashes although since I have been interested in the concept of actual Reincarnation I have worked it into the prevailing Setting that those who are aware of the fact , which is a rarity though it does happen, sometimes they can get inspiration or hunches and perhaps even quest to find out about their former incarnations plus my friends enjoy the fact that their PC's eventually get to come back, though they might be completely different sexes and or classes, though a character's soul is tied to them so a halfling for example will never return as a orc. This is one reason why I have greatly pondered removing reincarnation from the spell list, but still pondering it and all.

my 2 cents and other stuff :)

Hello to all my fellow players and once, as the title says, thank you for the PDF Charts that were posted in the persons post on another thread which sadly I cannot find. My question is this... Why can I download the PDF but not send it to myself to print? It fails every time I try and I am confused as to why it would be so hard to do so.

PF DM SCREEN – Version 1 – Denny Edwards -- January 10, 2010

was at the end of the PDF

As a minor aside I use a 20 point buy though my house rules state that each stat starts at 10 then each character has 20 points to purchase stats on a 1:1 then add racial modifiers. My friends tend to enjoy it and it gives them a fair amount of wiggle room that they don't seem to mind.

Just thought I'd share :o)

Also, not sure if this would be the place to post it or not...

I started a Chronicle in a Home brewed World with the Pathfinder Deities, Races, etc. I also went back and redone the Spell Points from Unearthed Arcana as well as Class Defense Bonuses and my friends really enjoy it. So I guess I done something right for them :o)

Happy Gaming!

1) No. The Healer class is closed content and Paizo cannot legally reproduce or modify it. They're also a fairly limited class. If you don't want a deity following divine caster the Druid, the upcoming Oracle or a reflavoured Cleric all work.

Unfortunately I dislike the Cleric for their more militaristic fighting and the Druid, while i like a lot more now would more fit my liking if they had included the Healing and Death Domains since those are by definition Natural based and also a very Druidism feel to them as a lot of books I have read paint them as both Healers and Wielders of Death a kinda 'Neutral" domain towards a very Natural Class. The reason I liked the Healer before was that it had a more specialized healer whose spell list and abilities were more geared towards healing than combat. For example none of their spells granted any combative magics at all and were purely defensive and restorative with a fair Hit Dice and Skill Points that were more along of what I'd envision a Healer to be, plus their Class Ability of being able to add their Charisma Modifier to all Curative Spells was top notch and let me play a Healing spell caster that was unique in an of itself that wasn't simply a Cleric or Druid but something of a mix of both but not limited as they are. That is a Cleric's devotion in a Deity or a Druids Nature Theme.

Plus Healers did not have to rely on a Divine Patron as a Cleric or a Druid does, in regards to spells.

4) Not sure I understand the question. Could you clarify exactly what's causing the problem?

I can try to. In the Bestiary it mentions that a NPC, and I assumed Monster as well, was generated as per the NPC Rules in the Core Book but the question I had was, I hope I am asking this right.

Orc CR 1/3 Warrior 1

They would each be built on 260 GP for equipment since they are considered a 1 st level creature and then their usual equipment [Falchion, Studded Leather, and 4 Javelins which total 104 GP] which leaves 156 GP worth of more gear. Am I correct in assuming that, if I so wanted, I could have them be carrying 156 GP on them each OR am I misunderstanding how it works? I am trying to make sure I am not screwing up for my friends.

Thanks once again
Chris

Actually after writing this I found another small question as well.

Is Pathfinder going to be redoing the rules for Population Demographics like they had in 3rd and 3.5 or if they do have them I can't seem to find the page on it. I am wishing to fully flesh out the friends "Home Village" and I cannot remember where to look or anything of sufficient help in the matter.

thanks once again!

Liberty's Edge

1. Will Pathfinder be perhaps reviving the Healer Class from Miniatures Handbook and if so what do you think that they might change and or add? Healers are by far my favorite of all the Divine Spell Casters that do not actually have to follow a Deity to acquire their "Gifts" and I'd love to see them in Pathfinder or with peoples humble advice and help how I could do them myself.

2. Is there a more "martial art" feel to Feats that is better than Improved Unarmed Strike? I have been pondering doing a more Asian themed game with Martial Arts and the like in addition to the more usual Classes and abilities found in Pathfinder but as a whole I do not like the Improved Unarmed Strike only doing 1D3 [or 1D2 for smaller if memory serves]. I was curious if anyone has ran into this and was looking for advice. I was actually pondering using some Feats from BESM D20 to offset the way Improved Unarmed Strike World, such as Martial Arts and Brawl.

3. I had asked this once before and I thank the people that answered my question but this is in regard to a curious problem I have. I am wishing to incorporate Class Defense Bonuses from Unearthed Arcana into my Pathfinder Game as I have never liked the fact that your ability to hit increased as you advanced but your ability to get out of the way, unlike Hit Points, never increased. I have been trying to work out a nice combination of both Armor as Damage Reduction and Class Defense Bonuses where I, and who knows maybe some other people have wondered this also, to have Armor being actual Armor [i.e. Damage Reduction as I envision Armor to actually be] and also increases to your Defense as you advance in Level while allowing Classes, such as the Fighters Armor Mastery, to still be valid.

and finally hopefully the easiest and less dumb question I have....

4. I am having a problem grasping the Treasure Rules for individual creatures. I tried to do a small session with a friend of mine and his new Ranger and he and a few NPC's took on 6 Orcs and defeated 4 as the other 2 ran off. When trying to determine the treasure they had on them the NPC treasure rules are confusing to me and I'd please like some help from anyone that could explain it better to me.

In all things thank you all for being so helpful and friendly on the Boards it has refreshed my faith in a gaming community that is about the soul of the game and in having fun.

Thanks in advance to all the help and advice!

Chris

pardon my horrid writing abilities....

I seem to recall in Unearthed Arcane for 3.5 the Optional Class Defense Rules. I was curious if they would convert over roughly the same since a lot of my PC's, as well as players PC's, wish to forgo Armor for various reasons such as Concept.

thanks in Advance!
