Molly Fairlocks's page

I want to say thanks to everyone as well for putting up with us as well as a special thanks to Brainiac for running the game. Molly was created for one of the very first PbP games I joined (years ago). It never made it past Book 1 - Part 1. It was nice to see Molly final finish her story.

I love my character epilogues. I always try to give them one. I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite. But here are some that would be at the top of the list (and links if you'd like to read them)...

Twenty years later ...

"How's this look?" the boy asked excitedly as he presented the thick steel rod to the appraising halfling.

"Nope," Molly said after a moment of careful examination. "Ya got gaps here and here," she continued, pointing out the flaws with a calloused finger. "Aw, man!" the boy declared in frustration. "Can't I just fix those with a weld?"

"Only if you want the bloody thing blowing up in yer face," Molly replied with a chuckle. "Ya think I got these marks because Fifteen's a biter?" She points to a couple of small scars near her lips and one near her eye.

"If I were a biter, would not it be more likely that you would have scars on your ..." Fifteen interjects.

"The point being," Molly continues, cutting off her wife, "It needs to be perfect or I won't let you move on ta the next step,"

"Aw, man," the boy repeats with a sigh before moving back to reheat the metal.

"I've seen you patch stock like that before," Fifteen questions her wife with a raised eyebrow. Molly shakes her head. "If Markus plans on forging a pistol, then it'll bloody well be perfect. I'll not have a son of ours running around with anything less."

Fifteen looks thoughtful for a moment before the connection is made. "You plan to have it enchanted," she declares. Molly gives her wife a wink. "No Fairlocks is going to be armed with a run-o-the-mill weapon if I have anything to say about it."

As the boy works away at the bellows, his mothers watch in silence. Eventually Molly speaks.

"I, uh ... I forgot how to get home today," she says with a frown. "I picked up some vegetables from Tassies and stepped out into the square and realized that I had no idea where we lived. I probably stood there a good ten minutes before that nosey Bonnie Banks asked me if I was thinking about something important. I snapped at her and told her that everything I think about is important and picked a direction and started walking." Molly looks up at her wife. "It took me another five minutes to realize that I was walking in the wrong direction."

She takes a ragged breath.

"I don't know how long ... how long it'll be before I get as bad as m' mam was, but ... promise me that you'll take steps before then, ok? I don't want to put you and Markus through that."

"You know that I will not do that," Fifteen replies. "We are your family. You will be with us as long as possible. I am not giving up on the helmet, I need more time, but you are strong, and brilliant. I will not let you go. You are going to see our grandchildren if I have to return to the Silver Mountain and beg Casandalee for her intercession."

The android turns to look down at her wife, interlinking their fingers in a gesture that is completely natural for them both after two decades that have left Fifteen untouched and streaked Molly's once brown hair with grey. "I love you, Molly, and I do not intend to let this..." She bites back the words 'instability, flaw, defect'. Once upon a time she's used each and every one and each time her wife has crumpled in front of her. Fifteen is dangerously intelligent and although she doesn't understand people, she knows her Molly. So she smiles and carries on. "Illness, get the better of us. You stay here and watch Markus. I will make dinner."

In the privacy of the kitchen Fifteen closes her eyes briefly. Casandalee, hear my prayer. Help my Molly. Hold her memories safe until I can finish my work, until I can save her. Please. She works efficiently to prepare dinner and set the stew bubbling before slipping away to the workshop she maintains adjacent to Molly's smithy.

In contrast to Molly's smithy, a paragon of a craft refined over centuries, Fifteen's workshop is a sterile and pristine place. Under the aegis of Kaska the Black Sovereign the android has accumulated technological secrets that would shock even hardened members of the Technic League. Sitting on a table in the centre of the room is an odd helmet, with large packs on each side and a single wire trailing from the back.

Fifteen clicks the light on, activates a small pane of glass and begins to speak in clear, clinical tones. "Twenty seventh of Gozran, test three hundred and eighty two, variant beta." She flicks open a small socket behind her wrist and connects the wire, before speaking the ritual words that she has recorded faithfully every test since the very first test of the very first prototype.

"For Molly."

Molly looks over the facets and points to one. "Compassion," she says with confidence. "A goddess needs compassion."

"Oh, he just decided that I was a bit much for him and booted me out of his 'Perfect Heaven'," the halfling says with a frown, tossing aside the now-useless mindmelder. "'s not like I haven't been kicked out of somewhere before. What happened with you?" she counters. "Did you actually defeat him? Are we done here?"

"If this is my 'idealized incarnation' then why does my hair still look like shite?" Molly grouses. "I want to speak to yer manager."

"Seems pretty appropriate," Molly says to Fifteen with a frown after taking in their new 'world'. "A fake god creates a fake heaven."

"Now I know something is broken inside that head of yers," Molly says softly, her anger vanishing as quickly as it surfaced. She reaches out and puts her hand on the android's cheek. "That's the only explanation for why you think I could find anyone else that would love me like you do. Why you think my life would be anything but absolute shite without you in it."

She steps closer and draws her wife into a hug.

"We stand or fall together, m' Love," she whispers. "So just get it through that thick skull. The decision's made. There's no going back now."

She crosses to Molly. "I will understand if you do not come with us." She says. "We will need someone to guard the Divinity Drive." Although she delivers that statement in her usual tones Molly can easily see the subtle signs of emotion, the slight tightness around her wife's eyes, the barely perceptible hitch in her speech. Fifteen is scared, and it's easy to figure out why.

Molly's face quickly transitions from shock to anger.

"What?!" she questions, her cheeks turning bright red with emotion. "Did one of those gears in yer head spin the wrong way? One of the widgets flip up when it should have flipped down? Because it sounds like yer suggesting that I stay behind while you run off and tangle with that ... that ... calculation machine with delusions of godhood."

She steps closer, raising an accusing finger towards Fifteen.

"If yer trying to rid yourself of me then just say so and be done with it. Otherwise we've had this fecking discussion before. You and me. Together. Live or die. Whether it's on the ninth level of hell, the seventh heaven, or ..." she gestures again at the huge sphere, "Wherever the feck that thing takes us. We're meant to be together, Fifteen." Her voice cracks at her wife's name. "Or we're not." A lone tear escapes the small woman's eye.

"So which is it?"

"Oh, for the love of ...! Stop fecking gadding about!" Molly snaps as she tries to keep the gargoyle in her sights.

Molly looks over the moonstones with a professional eye, nodding at the quality of the stones.

Noticing Fifteen's distracting, she tugs on the android's hand. "Hey, Love. It's going to be all right," she says when her wife looks down at her. "You're wrapping your mind around all the possibilities once we face Unity - I can tell. Don't overthink it. When you overthink, you stiffen up. You need to relax." She glances around at the others before her eyes return Fifteen's. "I know what I'd normally do to relax you, but an audience means that won't work. So how about this?" Pulling even more on the hand indicating for the android to bend down, Molly cups her cheek and presses her lips to her love's.

"It's going to be ok," she repeats, when the kiss ends. Her cheeks are almost glowing red with everyone looking, but she gives Fifteen's hand a squeeze and grins. "I've got a feeling."

While her wife is hitting the dragon's vulnerable spots, Molly is struggling to hit at all as the field of chaos surrounding the beast is turning aiming into a real challenge.

Molly's worship, for it can be called nothing else, is directed entirely towards her wife. In every touch. Every gaze. Every spoken and unspoken word.

"I don't know what will happen when we face Unity, Molly. It is my creator and I worry there might be something inside me which lets it command me still. I just want you to know that I love you. No matter what happens tomorrow, and if I don't survive then my love will follow you until the stars themselves fall from the sky."

Their soft conversation is elevated in volume with the small woman's voice.

"Don't you start talking like that!" she declares, her ire clear. "You are not going to die, damn you! You and me will live through this 'cause I'll not have it any other way!" The halfling sits up, uncaring that she's drawn everyone else's attention. "If you have the nerve to die on me, love of m' heart, I'll never forgive you. So stop that shite right now!"

"I don't care much about him being entertained as long as he ain't swinging that fecking axe at me!" the halfling snaps as the healing Holg has just done is mostly undone by said weapon. She pulls back another five feet as the cleric inserts himself between her and the giant robot.

"Doing m' best, Love," Molly calls back.

While the axe misses her neck by a whisper, the damage it does to her shoulder isn't insignificant and blood splatters down towards the ground in a grisly shower. Ignoring the searing pain, Molly continues to fire as she hovers just a bit back from the now-flying robot.

Since Holg's attempt at swaying the androids failed, I figured, 'What the heck'. Took a look and looked a second time. For some reason, I totally spaced that Molly has a +19 Dip.

If we're waiting around another day to try again, she'll give it a shot.

'Why, oh why, didn't I take the blue pill?'

Molly smiles reassuringly up at her wife and gives the hand a squeeze. "Nah. We were fated, Love," she says. "You for me and me for you. It was always going to happen."

Molly steps close to the android and puts a small hand on one of her wrists.

"They have nowhere to escape to, Love," she says in a soft voice. "Their bodies are long gone and they should have been given the right to move on to the next existence long ago. Unity has them trapped in a servitude that only death will free them from."

She gestures around at the tanks holding the enslaved brains.

"Would you want to continue existing in this manner?"

Only her wife would detect the huge amount of relief that Molly hides when the deacon finally fades from view. "Is there something we can do for all those poor spanners back there that were following this ... thing?" she asks as she clears the bore on her musket and adjusts the sight slightly.

Wow. That's a seriously bad-ass Touch AC. O.o

Her wife's comforting strength settles most of the confusion and fear swirling around inside Molly's head. "I don't know what that was, but I have no wish to ever repeat it," she says in answer to Fireday's statement.

The halfling remains wrapped in Fifteen's arms for another few moments or so and private whispered words are shared. Finally with a nod and a rough brushing of her eyes, Molly takes a step back and picks up her dropped weapon.

"I'm ready to move on," she says with a nod to the android.

Molly's precious musket drops to the floor and her wraps her small arms around Fifteen's waist. The android can feel the small woman's body trembling. "Just hold me," she whispers.

Darkness was all around her. And cold.

Molly couldn't feel her body, but the cold still seemed to permeate her very being. Silence was her only companion. Her first thought was Fifteen. Whenever she was afraid or hesitant, her wife was there to give her stability to lean against. But she couldn't feel the android's presence anywhere. Her intent to call out was cut short with the instinctual knowledge that the silence wouldn't allow itself to be disturbed.

What happened? How did she get here? All valid questions, but they paled against the one foremost on her heart; Where was her wife? Why was she alone?

Silence be damned, she drew breath into non-existant lungs to scream out for the woman, but her act of rebellion was cut short buy an unimaginable pain in her chest and bright light searing her eyes. The light faded somewhat to reveal Holg's determined face. With a shaking hand, she brushed his hand away from her chest and gasped for air.

"I'm ... I'm fine," she croaked out and closed her hand around her ever-present musket. "Don't worry about me."

The grimace on her face faded when she saw Fifteen only a few steps away, slashing away at the incorporeal Deacon. Knowing that in the midst of melee was not the place for her, she crawled away as best she could.
