About Miso Jirogawa
History:
Miso Jirogawa (adopted name, he does not speak his given name any more) was born near the mouth of the Red Fox River in the foothills north of the Kodar Mountains to a miner and the woman he loved but could not afford to marry. The little encampment — it can't really be called a village — managed to scratch out a living from the rock beneath their feet, but not prosperity. Still, childhood was tolerable enough.
Adolescence would be another story. Ulfen raids from southern Irrisen were always a threat, but a distant one. When the day came that "distant" turned into "immediate", no one was prepared. The Ulfen took every other man and child as a thrall, including him. For four years he labored for the Drayksküll family in the temple of Gorum in his captors' land, each one further west: first in Lod, then Saraby, and finally Dalun. He was taught the ways of the god of battle by the Ulfen, but he found himself internally rejecting the ceaseless violence and unfathomable bloodlust.
Fate would intervene in his sixteenth year. His Ulfen master stole away across the Irrisen border in the dead of night with the entire family, attempting to escape the tyranny of the White Witches. The departure was a success, but a bittersweet one, as three of the Drayksküll clan perished during the flight and the family's entire savings had to be left behind. That meant surrendering their thrall, and in short order the sale was complete to a mature Varki woman, who happened to be travelling through on her way to Magnimar.
Paiva Jirogawa freed him almost before the Ulfen were out of sight, but her words sounded to him like the chiming of angelic bells. She offered the choice to go forth into the world with his new-found freedom, but also said he could join her on her pilgrimage if he wished — he should look into his heart to learn what he wanted. He agreed to remain with Paiva almost instantly. She called him Miso, which in the Varki tongue roughly translates to "free".
She taught him much during their journey: the power of Korada to protect, the power of one's body as a temple and as a weapon, and the power of passion as a focusing tool. When they arrived in Magnimar, Paiva secured a remote island off the coast to continue Miso's teaching. He shared her knowledge, her wisdom, and ultimately her bed. And a year and a day after they met, he awoke next to her cold, dead body.
Such is tapa vayltava tahti, the way of the wandering star: when the student comes to learn all the student can, the teacher passes.
