Trailer released a week or two ago I was excited when I first heard they were doing a new adaptation, since the novel is probably my second favorite vampire novel of all time. I'm maybe a bit disappointed this won't be released in theaters, but then getting to watch it in the comfort of my own home, without paying extra, is nice. Anyway, I thought the trailer was sufficiently creepy. Look forward to watching this.
I've heard bits about this show, much more in recent days. Now we have what I think is the first major casting news: ‘Godzilla: King Of The Monsters‘ Star Kyle Chandler Is Cast As Hal Jordan In ‘Lanterns’ That's an interesting casting choice. Not bad, I think, if you're going for an older, more experienced Hal showing the ropes to the new guy, Jon Stewart. I had also seen an article awhile back describing the Stewart character as more of a hot head, which I kind of how I remember him from the first series I saw him in (Cosmic Odyssey). My only hesitation is that Tom King is involved. I consider him to be a talentless hack, one-trick pony. Not sure how the dude still has any kind of career in anything remotely related to comic superheroes. I can only assume he knows where some "bodies are buried", so to speak. So typically I consider any project he's involved in to be DOA. Would that more people thought the same.
This is a new series on Max, spinning off the Robert Pattinson led The Batman film, with a nearly unrecognizable Colin Farrell reprising his role one of Batman's more well-known enemies. The first episode dropped this week, and I finally got around to watching it last night. The story picks up not long after the events of The Batman film. Carmine Falcone is dead, and the city is in chaos from the criminal power vacuum. Alberto Falcone shows up. So does Sofia Falcone, having been release from Arkham where she was committed for being the serial killer known as The Hangman (which was right out of Dark Victory). We've also got Clancy Brown as Sal Maroni. The fist episode was really good, and sets up not a superhero story, but a crime drama. I'm not a huge fan of the so-called "grounded" Batman, but I'm not too bothered since this series seems like it's going to distinctly lack Batman (except via the occasional name drop). And Farrell's version of Penguin was, in my opinion, one of the better things to come out of that film (other than Zoe Kravitz's Catwoman). Farrell does a great job again here. So does the chick playing Sofia Faclone - she comes across as just barely giving the appearance of being hinged in any way. I look forward to the remaining episodes.
This is another South Korean zombie series I had heard about awhile back. I finally started watching it last night, but only got one episode into this first season. It's high school teen drama meets zombie apocalypse. At least that's how it's starting. There's the cast of characters you'd usually find in a high school. There's also the creepy science teacher, a supposed genius who has something to do with the zombie virus (not sure what yet, other than his son seems to be the first victim, and he's got an infected hamster as well). Anyway, this first season has 12 episodes. I heard it's renewed for a second season, but I'm not sure when that's coming out.
I had watched reviews and recommendations for this show shortly after it first came out, but hadn’t gotten around to watching it until this week. To be honest, I was leery about watching something with that much source material (anime and manga) behind it. Anyway, I was bored, so finally ran through the series, finishing it last night. It was quirky and fun. I enjoyed the story, the world that was built up, and all the characters. Even the arrogant son of the guy with the axe for a hand started to grow on me by that final episode. And Luffy is just a fun protagonist - endlessly optimistic, loyal to his friends, and pretty badass in a fight. Now my kids started watching the anime yesterday. I caught a few episodes of that in between work stuff. It seemed equally as quirky and fun.
I was surprised to see there was no thread for this movie. Anyway, unlike more recent Marvel properties, this one actually had me a bit hopeful and excited. The more I saw, the more convinced I was this one might actually make a good bit of money. Just a little while ago I saw an "out of theater" reaction/spoiler-free-review that had me even more hopeful. They said it was a great movie. That it paid homage to the Fox X-Men franchise while making lots of fun of more recent Marvel. That it not only had good cameos, but that some of them were quite substantial. It was also stated this was the most violent (Disney) MCU film to date. So I was going to wait until a week or so had passed before maybe trying to see it in the theater, but now I may try to go this opening weekend instead.
Comedian Bob Newhart, deadpan master of sitcoms and telephone monologues, dies at 94 Not sure if a lot of the youngsters around here will remember him. A great comedian. Rest in Peace. "Hi! I'm Larry, this is my brother Darryl, and this is my other brother Darryl"

One of my coworkers turned me on to the trailer for this show. It just so happened to be the same day the show dropped on Netflix, so I gave it a shot. It was entertaining, but VERY predictable. There were at least three or four major plot points I saw coming a mile away….. Spoiler:
That the eldest brother was still alive. That he’d joined the enemy. And that he’d become the new enemy leader. They telegraphed that stuff a mile away.
Also that the new assistant at the brewery would be a ninja of some kind. And that the politician from the beginning was secretly a member of the villain organization. Once they revealed the scroll the bad guys were trying to recover was a family tree, it was pretty clear it would show her. The only characters I truly liked were Soichi and Grandma (my favorite). Soichi was mostly just trying to keep his family safe, determined that at least one of his children would grow up as “normal”. When he realized that wasn’t to be, however, he manned up and did his job. And he was badass. Grandma I loved. She was funny, mysterious, and a bit cantankerous. And it seemed like most everyone was terrified of her (with good reason). Nevertheless, I enjoyed the show. The story was decent. The action was plentiful. They had some good bits of humor. And I read somewhere where someone thought it was an at least spiritual sequel to an old Sonny Chiba TV series. Which is cool. Anyway, for anyone who likes ninjas, I recommend it. Only 8 episodes.
Apparently, Lumley died earlier this year, back at the beginning of January. I know a lot of people disliked his Cthulhu myth is stories. To be honest, I’m one of them, although I still enjoyed them to a degree. I was a fan of his other work, however. Especially his Necroscope series, which I saw as an interesting variation on the vampire myth. And I liked a lot of his short stories. Anyway, his stories brought me a lot of enjoyment over the years. Rest in peace.
Toby Keith, Country Music Star Who Sang ‘Should’ve Been a Cowboy,’ Dies at 62 An entertaining musician, great supporter of military service members, and seemed to be a pretty cool dude. Rest in Peace. Also screw you, cancer.
Carl Weathers, ‘Rocky’s’ Apollo Creed and ‘Mandalorian’ Actor, Dies at 76 A wonderful actor. Rest in Peace, Action Jackson.
Harry Connick Sr, longtime New Orleans DA and singer's dad, dead at 97 Father of the more well known singer/actor. He was a fairly talented musician as well. I even saw him perform once.
‘Star Trek’ Actor Gary Graham Passes Away At 73 Years Old I never watched him in Star Trek, but I recall him from the Alien Nation TV show. Rest in Peace.
Cindy Morgan Dies: ‘Caddyshack’ And ‘Tron’ Actress Was 69 She may not have been the greatest actress, but I liked her well enough. Might have to watch Tron tonight in her honor. Rest in Peace.
Tom Wilkinson, 'The Full Monty' actor, dead at 75 Sad to hear. He was a solid actor. I liked him as Carmine Falcone in Batman Begins, and as Cornwallis in The Patriot. I also recall he had a small role in The Ghost and The Darkness.
I’d heard about this show here and there, but after The Critical Drinker praised it I decided to give it a try. I’m only two episodes in, but I’m glad I did. It’s a great series so far. The animation is fantastic. The voice cast is impressive (including the always magnificent George Takei, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, and Kenneth Brannagh). The story is set in the Edo Period, when Japan was closed off to foreigners, and follows a half-white/half-Japanese female samurai in her quest for revenge against her white father. It’s the type of story I’ve really come to enjoy over the last several years - that mix of history and fiction. The main characters are all really interesting, with compelling storylines. The writing is really good, introducing the major story and various characters with a minimal of fuss. As previously stated, the animation is really awesome. I would encourage everyone to watch this great series.
Andre Braugher, 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' actor, dead at 61 Sad to hear. He was a good actor. If I recall correctly, he was my second favorite voice of Darkseid.
They released a teaser a while back, but here’s the first full trailer. It looks interesting. My kids and I have enjoyed the other movies, so will probably watch this one when it hits streaming.
Renowned Hollywood Producer Marty Krofft Dead At 86 He helped create some great shows. Rest in Peace.
Trailer for the animated adaptation In the past, DC has done adequate to damned good with their animated adaptations of comic stories. So I might be cautiously optimistic about this one. The dude voicing the Monitor sounded so familiar to me I had to look him up. He also did the voice of Tyrael in Diablo 3.
’Friends' star Matthew Perry dead at 54 Again, I’m sad to hear about this. He was very funny. My wife was a huge fan of the show. |
