Weapon smith as an unlikely agent of a god
From an early age Bill has seemed touched. Although a bright, likable fellow, he would, under stress not understand what others would say, and would speak what seemed gibberish. At least he seemed to be a natural in his fathers forge. Metal seemed to talk to him, and disturbingly Bill talked back.
Then at the age of fourteen, a cleric of Torag was traveling through, to give blessings on metal workings and crafters, when an accident happened. Bills father was hit in the face by a sudden shower of sparks. Bill moved up as healed him, speaking in a strange tongue, with many of the town and the cleric watching in disbelief. Some cried he was possessed of a demon, but the cleric declared "no, no a demon but a god. Torag. The boy is speaking ignan, the language of fire."
This was seen as a great blessing, but to bill it was a hard time. suddenly he was made to leave his home to join the church. But he found he was no cleric, despite the wishes of many in the order, but an oracle of metal, a conduit to the lord of forges.
Life became complicated. Bill hates complicated. And they wouldn't let him forge. So he left the seminary. After several attempts to make him come back, the order decided to let him help in his own way. This dissatisfied some in the hierarchy, but for now Metal Bill, as he is nicked named, is more of a free agent.
Subject to Torag of course. And gods always have a reason.
