No less bloodthirsty than a former slave who 'axed' his way to freedom. Merger is 'mostly' good but has issues with Slave owners..
"Fair enough 'knight'." Mercer says. "You assume I'm a slave of any kind, you are wrong. Ol' Deadeye bids up protect family and neighbor. I go by what I see.. every time I see what you where? It's usually someone coming to take my family, my village or my life. You'll excuse me if I think you're games in council do more than our efforts at finding the abuses of the Lumber Consortium up in Bellis." The halfling doesn't quite spit as he walks to the door. "You're judged by your actions and I'd say that armor says a lot in those actions. So, first impressions.. not so good." Mercer takes a deep breath. "Ol Deadeye also says we judge ourselves by our own deeds. You got us wrong. Can't help you with that but I can say that I'm wrong. This time. Your tone says not by much." He shrugs and looks to the Fox. "If he wants to yammer, babble and try to talk around the tools in People's Council, he can learn the same lesson we did. Got to find ways to cut the rot out before reforming it." With that Mercer steps out.
"True, if I'd been born in Bellis, rather than axing my way to freedom in the pit back in Westfrown, I might trust the law a bit more. Fiveboars used to be a rcht family back in the day, brewers to the crown -Pre-Thrune of course-. Afterwards we were slaves on lands that once belonged to us." The halfling sets down the blade he was working on a pulled out a bottle of whiskey. "Fiveboar's premium blend, crown exclusive stock, possibly the last bottle in existence. Everything after is brewed in Bellis." He said cracking the seal for a sip before tucking it away. "But what do I know? These days I'm a pathfinder message rider. I just read up in the unaltered history sections most days."
"Oh he's most likely looking for an angle. Hell knight of the order of the scourge looking thru rules of the People's Council? He's like one of the Lumber Corstitum folks. look for an angle to work his way." He continued going thru his weapons as he talked running his whet stone over an astonishing amount of blades. "He's looking to twist things his way, like a good little hell knight does." The halfling shrugged as he worked. "Not that it's a bad thing. If you know the rules, do lots of things. Like kill your torturing master and earn your freedom."
"You'll be wanting to get the additions volume as well, seeing what has changed in the last year that hasn't been reprinted into the updatedrules that comes out in the fall before the next session of the council." The scarred halfling said in a broken voice that flips between smooth speaking voice and a whisper. He puts away the axe and moves to a smaller one "Always good to know the rules." He in that same ragged voice
A scared halfling with a well waxed beard stands at a corner, running his whetstone across the blade of his greataxe. The look on his face was a bland neutral look, but the scars seemed to get redder as he watched the Hellknight. The stone goes back and forth as he waits to see if anyone needed a hand. He watched the fox and actress but kept quiet. After all, everyone has seen him at the grand lodge of Absalon sharpening his axe. It was his feverous tic.
A few hours later The bushes rustle as a heavily scarred halfling in a breast plate leads an axe beak into the clearing. His clothing and armor is bloody an worn, but he looks alertly around the clearing before looking at Gelrtar firmly as he hands off a trio of sleeping children to the waiting people and nods to the haggard halfling woman who steps into the clearing. "They'll sleep to full moonrise, I've given Gran enough to cover lodging, the trip and such till I finish my business here an can join them in Andoran." He says quietly as he checks his axebeak's saddle as it sniffs the breeze and hisses in the direction they came from. "Damn, how many Dash?" The axebeak gives several long hisses as he mounts the bird and pulled out a sponge and flask, passing the sponge to the bird. It cheerfully chews on the sponge and vanishes as he uncorks his and likewise vanishes as the sounds of a hound is heard. "I'd suggest you take your folk and leave, I'm about to upset some very nasty folks." He says before the sound of running axebeak vanishes in the distance. The old lady sigh as she takes two of the sleeping children and starts moving away from the direction of the hounds. "Best we get going, my grandson has too much of his grandfather in him. We shan't see him tonight, win or lose, he'll be making a statement with the hunters if he gets them an if he lose we will have fun of our own."
"Lawless? I was within the law at the time." Mercer purred with a wicked grin. "I was tossed into the arena after my 'former' master had me beaten and bleeding before I was thrown in. He enjoyed the idea of killing me after the sin of winning a fight against six dogs." The sound of stone against axe continued. "He thought a slip, particularly one bleeding like me, couldn't hold a battle axe scaled for his lard swollen form. He was still smirking when I lopped his lying cheating head off his shoulders." Mercer met the 'lawyer's' eyes. "It was okay for a former slave demand a duel with legitimate cause till I killed three men for cause. Then suddenly I was 'inciting' rebellion and not 'understanding my place. I played the game, and I obeyed the rules.. and when I cut down three terrible wastes of skin. They skinned my brother for the sin of not serving the wine chilled properly." Mercer's face went grim. "For laws to be true, fair and all the rest.. you don't change them when you don't get your way." Mercer grinned wickedly. "I'm looking forward to what is coming..I promised the judge I'd never return to Westcrown, but I'm quite sure.. the winds are changing, The Lord of Hell's enslavement of Chelliax is going to end and soon." He pauses and smiles to the hellish representatives. "I know my family history.. I wonder.. do you know the truth of your lines? The parts that the censors purged over the years? What state can stand on a foundation of lies?"
A heavily scarred halfling watches Sark from the shadows of the room corner. Clearly a former slave, Mercer simply watches him as he sharpens his great axe with a whetstone while an axe beak watches the Taldane from behind the heavily armed halfling. "I say restore the code duello, it's how I got my family free before a 'sudden reform' was issued in Westcrown.." He rolled up his arm to show three names tattooed on his arm, all lined thru. "I bought my emancipation fair and square, and won my family's in the arena." He resumed his honing of his edge. "What happened to the 'sore losers' after were 'self defense' as decide all lawful like. I paid my bits, the survivors paid theirs, an the judge quite honestly decide for me." His grim implied that he played 'Chelliaxian' law quite well. "I have a few cousins whose 'masters' I'd like to AX for their freedom from. Be nice to do it all legal like...one on one." |
