Caution: minor Rise of the Runelords spoilers (burnt offerings)
So a little background first, I'm running the Rise of the Runelords for my 3 players (and a gmpc to round out the party). The party delved too deep at thistletop without resting and trapped between nualia and her hound on one side and some of nualia's adventurers on the other they suffered a near TPK (one player managed to escape). Neither the living player nor myself want to lose the campaign over this, but one of the 2 players who's character died was really bummed (my little brother). He took a long time to decide on playing the elven ranger and feels he has played all the other classes that interested him recently. He didn't want to make a (near)identical character as it felt too gamey so he set about making a Boggard ninja But I felt like he really wanted to play his dead character still.
Anyway, I decided that Nualia and co. would likely burn the bodies of the dead. I then decided that Ketephys (his god and about whom little is written) would use a miracle to bring the ranger back from the dead as a sort of avatar as this quest (the adventure path) was deemed important to the god. I want to give my player some unique edges/flaws to represent he isn't just getting a second life video game style, but now on a mission as an agent of Ketephys.
I am wondering if anyone can help with ideas about abilities or drawbacks I could give him. I don't mind buffing him a bit, (as the party is kinda squishy I want to buff them all a little) or even taking a level away or something if the abilities are very good, but I don't want him to outshine the other players.
So far I am thinking of changing his favored enemy to giant (Ketephys knows they will be a threat) from animal, having his animal companion at fourth level be a special hawk from Ketephys of some kind, and perhaps one or two supernatural abilities inspired by the cycles of the moon.
Can anyone help me out with specific things they might give/do if they had a god resurrect a character like this?
