Description:

Possessing a mix of Taldan and Varisian features, Marcus’s skin is a lightly tanned bronze that serves to enhance a handsome if sharp appearance. He is rarely seen wearing anything on his head allowing his dark hair and green eyes to be free and unobstructed, he takes pride in keeping both his hair and beard trimmed and clean.

A whip of a man, Marcus dresses in well-crafted and form fitting attire, striving to allow for freedom of movement and minimize the chance of his clothing impeding the delicate precision required in casting. Ever pragmatic, Marcus prioritizes function over form and can be seen wearing tough and heavy duty explorer’s clothes with ample pockets, and a thick cloak for warmth.

Personality:

Due to his upbringing, Marcus has been trained to be extremely well spoken and well mannered, though he has been known to carry an incredible competitive streak. He is intently driven to always be carrying his ‘share’ of the work and takes great care to never be seen as ‘slacking’ or doing anything other than his best.

Often times his focused personality can cause him to lose sight of a situation, but it was a necessary survival tactic he developed to survive his years in the Arcanamirium. Driven to be the absolute best Marcus strives to excel in everything that he does to the extent that there are only two things that matter – Magic and Money. The way Marcus sees it, enough of one can bring more of the other.

Background:

Born on Erastus 19th 4683, Marcus was born in the city of Magnimar, part of the extended Deverin family. From the moment that Marcus was born, he has been involved one way or another in the family business. Be it as a baby sized paperweight to sit on loose desk documents, a runner to haul said paper to and fro, or as cheap labor to help stack crates. Despite his usefulness as a paperweight, such things were cheap and plentiful to the Deverin family and as Marcus grew, his involvement and education took a more cerebral approach, consisting of arithmetic, ledgers and most importantly finance.

Taking quickly to the family tradition easily, Marcus lived and breathed for trade. The process of rubbing two coins together and producing a third excited Marcus to no end. Had a twist of fate not set Marcus on another path, he might have ended up happily balancing ledgers and sheets for the rest of his life. As it happens to most, shortly after reaching puberty Marcus’s magical ability emerged, thankfully not in an overly embarrassing way. On a return trip to Magnimar after visiting his cousin in Sandpoint, Marcus was battling an irate horse that had unknowingly thrown a shoe, when the frustration between the two finally resulted in the animal throwing Marcus off, his temper burst, resulting in him throwing an armful of colors at the horse and knocking it unconscious in full view of his family.

After the shock dissipated (and stern talking to for taking his frustrations out on an animal), they turned to address his newfound skill. Schooling was a necessity, it wouldn’t be seemly to sprout rogue magic at every flash of emotion; however schooling in itself was expensive. What return would they get for sending him away to control his talent? Elated at his new found skill, Marcus seized the initiative channelling all the tutoring that his family had spent on him. He drafted a formal business proposal, and researched tuition costs on a number of Arcane universities, stating that no matter where his arcane talent took him, the money that they invested in his education would pay dividends, a year as a hedge mage in a small town like Sandpoint selling cantrips would more than double their investment in his studies. Surprised by the depth of his study, and excitement - they not only agreed to send him to school, but to the top school of Marcus’s choice, the Arcanamirium in Absalom. Marcus was elated and true to his word threw himself into his studies, focusing on it to the exclusion of all else.

When Marcus arrived at the Arcanamirium he was not content to only focus on bettering his mental faculties. Gifted with a steady eye and strong lungs Marcus expressed a great interest and an enthusiastic skill in any opportunity he had to compete with others in the common Absalom sports. His energy and active lifestyle set him apart from the traditionally sedentary scholars found within the college. Marcus thrived on the competitiveness found inside the Arcanamirium, from being woken up at the crack of dawn for to learn inversive binding sigils, to calculating arcane variables on the fly – hoping that his spell wouldn’t explode in his face to the endless pranking that students played on one another. Marcus worked to set himself apart from all the other students in his year, and others even older than him.

As the years wore on, Marcus had to find ways to support himself, the funds his family sent him covered only the most basic of tuition. Eager to explore all avenues of magical development, he apprenticed himself to the Arcanamirium’s forgemaster, learning how to shape metal and leather with slow determination and complete focus at the task at hand. After years of practice and determination, the day he was able to forge his very own scimitar and a matching chain shirt for a client was momentous and filled him with an indescribable joy. Marcus made a promise to himself to continue honing his craft until he is able to forge magical arms and armor that he saw his master forge daily.

Not to neglect his the merchant side of his family, Marcus also took advantage of the opportunity living in Absalom to watch how other traders made their living and to forge contacts among them. As a method to supporting his own income, Marcus worked hard at market speculation, trading small quantities of luxury goods, managing to turn a healthy profit.

As his studies wound down, Marcus, now a far cry from the acne ridden wisp of a boy that had left Magnimar was eager to return back home. Back both to his family and to put his education to use. Fate however conspired differently. Hopping on a boat that was conveniently bound to Sandpoint, Marcus’s intention was to drop by to visit his cousin, Kendra Deverin. However a number of Varisian pirates had a different idea, they seized Marcus’s ship and were intent on taking the entire crew as prizes, to be sold off in Riddleport as slaves. Forced to bide his time for days on end, as they sailed through the Lost Coast evading other shipping, Marcus lost track of time.

They chose their uprising on a particularly rough day on the sea, Marcus – having hidden his arcane talent for the time being – used it to great effect in surprising the pirates. Bloody and brutal, the attack was successful. Marcus and the crew members were able to re-capture the ship while the pirates were forced to deal with the rough weather. Yet fate was not yet done with them, before they could get full control of the ship, the reef came up to take a bite out of the ship as it slowly began shattering itself on the rocks. Taking what supplies they could lay their hands on, Marcus and the crew abandoned the sinking ship in hopes of dry land. Only to drag themselves ashore amidst a goblin raiding party, a desperate flight turned into a running beach battle as the goblins caught or killed crew member after crew member.

For the last few days Marcus has been running a desperate flight through the forest using every ounce of his magic and wits to evade the searching goblins. Hoping for any way possible to find and save his fellow crewmates.
