Mamoru: Mamoru did not know what could be said to be festive about the eve. There were no parades or celebrations or holidays that he was aware of. He left the gardens feeling peaceful and driven. Not sure where to go next. My inclination is to follow up on this conversation by trying to find someone on the council who might be sympathetic to the cause of allowing women to be tested.
Mamoru in the Gardens: Mamoru inclined his head respectfully. "I appreciate the three of you giving me cause to think on this. I am due to meet with one of the members of the council soon. I will speak to him of this conversation." I'm happy to keep roleplaying this encounter as long as you want, or move things along to something new. Whatever works best for the story.
Mamoru in the Gardens: "Greetings, esteemed ladies of Wei." the warrior said, rising politely and bowing, before kneeling again as tea was laid out. "I am Mamoru of the house of Zhao." "I can only speak of what I know, having once been a young and hot-spirited duelist myself." he sipped his tea gracefully and smiled at the quality of it. "I do not know if a woman dueling in public can be considered wise, but I think I understand where such a choice might come from." "To explain myself, I will have to let you in on a small secret. I have been bested by women before," he said with a small smile. "I find no shame in admitting it. No gender is a prerequisite for skill at arms." "Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for recognition of that skill. Men, no matter how clumsy with the blade, have the opportunity to be test their skill before the council. I myself was tested and recognized when I was nine years only. I was well trained, yes, but not so skilled to be considered a prodigy. I was a boy. A small one. I did not hit my growth spurt for another two years. It is likely that all of you are stronger and hardier now than I was then. Li Xianglan, I overheard you say that you have demonstrated the Kata. I would wager that your skills are at least as good as mine were when I demonstrated for the first time. Quite likely better. The difference is, that I was demonstrating before the Council in a tournament. It is only because I am male that my meager skill was considered enough to see me recognized." Mamoru's smile broadened. "I placed second to last in that tournament. Unsurprising, considering that I was a child competing against grown men. Still though, I was allowed to compete." "I believe that rise of young women dueling in the streets is a cry for that same recognition and opportunity. Personally, I believe that if skilled and capable women such as yourself were allowed into tournaments, there would be no need for them to duel in the streets. They could keep their duels private, as is proper."
Mamoru in the gardens: Sense Motive: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17 Is this someone trying to send me some kind of hidden message, or is this a genuine conversation I'm overhearing? It's hard to tell in this game so far. "Forgive the intrusion, madam. I am wondering, do you seek an answer to your question, or was it simply rhetorical?" Mamoru replied from where he sat beneath the cherry blossoms.
If you know anyone who can write prescriptions, ask them to write you one for Silvadene. It's burn cream. It's one of those things that really should be available without a prescription, but because it has a very minor dose of steroid in it, it's controlled. It works great on just about any kind of skin damage, but on sunburns in particular, it's like a magic eraser. Pain relief is instant, and the skin damage will repair itself pretty much over night.
What cost to restore the empire? Shifu Gau Li was not a bad man. Merely stubborn and proud. To Mamoru, it was an easy decision. Someone else might be willing to accept that stain upon their honor, but he was not. Like Shifu Gau, Mamoru was proud of his heritage and the blood that ran in his veins. It would not do to insult his ancestors by becoming a petty criminal, no matter how great the cause. He returned to the gardens to meditate and contemplate poetry. He was sure that someone would notice him at some point. Mamoru is opting out of this. It just isn't him. Xiang Lun will have to pull it off himself. Mamoru will accept another mission though, as long as it isn't as underhanded.
Mamorou was no shinobi. He'd often wondered if those arts would be useful to his pursuits. He'd certainly had the time to learn them, but not the desire. His brows knitted in thought and he drank his tea in silence, pondering. After a time he rose and bowed to their hostess, and walked into the gardens to think further. It did not occur to him to ask on the missions of the others. In these matters it seemed that plausible deniability was important. It did not take him long to come to a decision. There was no honor in theft. Further, Shifu Gao Lishi was unknown to him, so it seemed wrong to embarrass him without cause. He could at least find out who Gao Lishi was. If nothing else it would give him something to do. Knowledge Nobility: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
He left quietly, off to spent a few hours in the hall of records and ask those he trusted if he knew of the man.
Mamoru wasn't sure why he was here. Well, he was, if he was being completely honest with himself. It was because he was frustrated. He'd been taught patience, the art of waiting for the right moment, for his entire life. Nothing had happened. He was tired of waiting. Something had to change. Something had to be done. The endless political posturing and gridlock was causing stagnation. Rot was creeping into everything. It was one thing to wait for the right time to sidestep death. It was another to let it creep up on you until there was nowhere to move. He could only hope that this was the right direction to move. That was what he wasn't sure of. He knew why he was here. He just wasn't sure if here was the right place to be. He sat at the table, saying nothing among these strangers until their patron spoke. He was mostly here to listen, and to decide. Mamoru looks mostly like his avatar picture. Shaved head, long braided topknot, grim expression. He's also wearing "light" samurai-style armor (no helmet or shoulder plates) and two swords on his left hip. His clothes are clearly expensive, but old.
Some potential backstory ties, based on my readings of everyone's backstories. Feel free to ignore them 1) Isawa Ayoshi and Righteous Grieving Silence are both world-wanderers. They could be wandering the world together. The aasamar-teifling dynamic also seems cool to pair 2) Zhang Yunjiang stealing something from Perspicacious Gau seems like a good event to help kick off Zhang's moral correction. Or just as part of their previous dealings, so Zhang has an atonement to make when they run into each other again. 3) Mamorou Zhao's famous ancestor was a Yojimbo who went Ronin because of his lord's dishonorable actions. That ancestor could be related to Isawa Ayoshi's family, making them distant cousins.
Just read my little blurb about my character in my previous post. Ugh. That's why I shouldn't try to post while I'm distracted by other things. I swear the quality of my writing is usually better than that. Anyway, here's a short list of stuff that anyone with a rank in Knowledge Nobility could easily know about Mamoru- Zhao family history: The Mamoru line is the stuff of myth and legend. They are the traditional bodyguards of the Eternal Emperor. They married into the Zhao family. They originally came from foreign stock, but at this point don't really have any foreign blood left. Many of the Mamoru traditions come from the Shokuro Shoganate. This causes some problems among the more xenophobic traditionalists in the nobility. They are known to be bad at political maneuvering. The Zhao family is bolstered by the prestige of the Mamoru line, and often brings them to social functions as part of a display of status and pageantry, but more than once has a Mamoru's blunt tongue and prickly sense of honor set back the Zhao family's political ambitions. The current Mamoru is a nobody. He is nearing thirty and has yet to distinguish himself in any way. He's a bit of an embarrassment to the Zhao family, but he has the good sense to keep his mouth shut so mostly he just gets ignored.
Reporting in! I'll have time to really look over the game play stuff and check in on roll20 later this afternoon. Looking forward to the game. I'm all for building pre-game relationships between characters. I'll start looking at the backstories of the other characters later to see if there's any potential ties. Anyone interested is free to do the same for Mamorou. Small priimer: Mamorou himself isn't super famous, but his bloodline is. It's the fantasy world equivalent of being the latest Kennedy or Windsor. He'said the heir to an extremely prestigious family within a major noble family.
Doomed Hero here. Went though and thought about my concept. I realized that I could do a lot of similar things without the "evil guy bound to be good" thing. So, I just decided to go full-on good. Mamoru is a bodyguard Samurai with deep ties to his family, and to service to the Eternal Emperor. He's very much a team player. He isn't exceptionally bright, but he is considerate and thinks deeply about consequences. his greatest wish is to live up to his family name. You know me pretty well as a player now so I'll spare you the self-promotion about who I am as a player. I promise Mamoru won't be nearly as weird as Bug. |
