About Malicious Intent
Malicious Intent as he is now known has no memory of “the incident.” Most of what he knows is pieced together from police reports, video snippets, and what his lawyers told him. Apparently, “Mal” was a member of some clandestine group who attempted to highjack a derelict starship that was being towed to Absalom Station by a band of ysoki junkers. Just before they entered the docking station, a small shuttle craft crashed into the flight bay, from which emerged a band of space pirates. During the ensuing firefight, all the ysoki except one were killed. At some point, an explosive detonated near Mal knocking him unconscious. Apparently the damage to the ship was now too extensive for the pirates and they fled. If not for a group of Starfinder agents in the vicinity, both Mal and the ysoki would certainly have died from their wounds. The lone surviving ysoki was able to provide some statements to the law enforcement investigators, but he died soon after, under suspicious circumstances, while in the hospital and before he could officially testify to the events.
Mal suffered from significant head trauma, flash burns to his eyes, concussion damage to his ears, and loss of both legs. Doctors were able to replace his lost limbs with prosthetics and his eyes/ears with cybernetic implants. When he finally awoke from his coma a few months later, he was mostly healed from the experience. Unfortunately, this meant he was well enough to stand trial for his involvement in the attempted hijacking.
Amnesia from the head trauma left Mal with a blank hole in his memory. He could only listen as the prosecutor described the actions of the pirates and the devastation they wrought. Throughout the trial, the prosecutor continuously referred not to him, but to his actions using the phrase “with malicious intent.” Since Mal could not remember what his name really was, he adopted the description as his name primarily since he liked the way it sounded when spoken in his native Vesk. Lacking any substantive evidence, most of the charges against him were eventually dismissed or he was declared not-guilty except for a couple of minor charges.
Despite the circumstantial evidence and suspicions, Mal cannot shake the feeling that he was somehow coerced or forced to participate in the attacks. It is the only explanation as he believes deeply in the Vesk code of honor. He fear that one day the pirates will return for him to once again force him into their circle.
For whatever reason, the Starfinder Society supported Mal before, during and after his trial. It was they who found him and rushed him to the medical center. It was they who paid for his numerous surgeries and prosthetic augmentations. It was they who provided his legal defense team. And it was they who paid the fines assessed with his conviction. It is because of this that Mal has sworn allegiance to the Society and now serves as an agent for Radaszam of the Acquisitives. Perhaps this affiliation can help him discover what really happened aboard that derelict ship and who his associates were. Mal now splits his time between providing security or private investigations and missions on behalf of the Society.
Mal has come to really enjoy the music of Strawberry Machine Cake. Most do not consider it “manly” or “macho” to listen to their music, so he hides it on his personal comms unit to keep up appearances. If anyone confronts him about it, Mal will definitely express his dislike of the band and their music. They are too “sticky” he claims. He carries an autographed copy of their recent CD, Star Sugar Heartlove, considering it his most prizes possession (not that anyone knows it).
